Great adventure ! I went to this place with my grandfather when I was a child, a long time ago (early 1950s). It was a big, working farm then and the main house was inhabited; did not go in the house, but I remember the barns and the cows grazing hither and yon. I believe Grandfather knew the farm manager or some such. It was in the middle of nowhere. In addition to the Washngton family ties, I think it had some connection of the Lee family as well. Robert E. Lee's son was Fitzhugh Lee, and General's Lee's wife might have been a Fitzhugh. Lee courted her and maybe married her at Chatham Hall ? THANKS.

Wow that's great you got to see the place while it was active. Yea William Fitzhugh was Robert E. Lee's wife's grandfather. William and George Washington were close friends and George's adopted grandson married William Fitzhugh's daughter. So then their granddaughter was Mary Ann Custis Lee (Robert's wife). They married at the Arlington House actually. It’s all get confusing. lol. ...thanks for sharing!

There have been plans for some years now to restore it, they did a 50 acre metal detecting trip there. It was a Civil War camp for the Union Army

I live about 15 minutes from here. Some years ago the National Park Service had a tour of the property. Very interesting place. Despite the lack of no trespassing signs I would have wimped out. Nice video.

The tree in front of the home was the “whipping tree” from the records I found online about the owner and home. Horrible history

Love the sounds of Summer! You can hear the bugs and the heat. Just found your channel looking for John Tyler's plantation. Not the right one, but subscribed!

Cool video! Side note - as much as everyone ever seems to claim, Abner Doubleday did NOT invent baseball. BUT, he definitely was a damn good soldier.

Very nice video! You might enjoy the Florida Trailblazer YT channel, he films a lot of abandoned historic sites down there. I found your comment about this area being used for balloon launching quite interesting! Looking forward to watching more of your videos as they come out.

It’s crazy thinking how much that barn would cost today and watching it waste away.

Thanks for the tour. Unfortunately unless the government of Virginia or a Historical Society take over the plantation it will be lost to developers. It will require millions to renovate and maintain.

What a shame this historic property is going to ruin.
