I wonder how many takes were done, esp. between Mother Jefferson, and Archie Bunker.I remember a different version, where Mother Jefferson says to Bunker,"Why, don't you dare call me Mammy!(and)"If you want to talk to me, talk to me right, or don't talk to me at all!" Then, before he starts to speak, she says, "Don't talk to me! She says it two times more, to Louise, and George, before saying, "I'm getting out of here!, as she stormed out, throwing her hands back, in disgust. Then, Bunker says to George,"What's the matter with her? I thought that's what all you colored people called them".
Why do people so conveniently forget that at the time the Brady Bunch was a hugely successful show because a lot of people then could not handle how raw AITF was? They wanted "Leave It To Beaver" type family shows instead.
This Jefferson's pilot show spinoff was priceless George's surprised reaction finding out Lionel was engaged to jenny a biracial young woman & Lionel never telling his family that his future father in-law was white stole the entire thunder about Archie not being invited to Lionel's engagement party wow kept me in stitched when I was a young child
Been watching the jeffersons for about 5 or 6 marathon so far. Really like that I could still find pockets of them in all in the family that I never saw before. They may not be rich on that show but they still got their heart and laughs.
Lionel and Jenny had a ridiculously long engagement. This episode was in Feb of 1974 and they didn’t tie the knot until the third season of “The Jeffersons” in late 1976. By then, Mike Evans wasn’t even playing Lionel anymore.
This was based on the UK show "Till Death Us Do Part." So far ahead of this show the UK version was never shown in the States. The UK show is also available on RUclips.
Great comment! That's why they clashed--(and for that matter that's why Archie and Mike always locked horns--they were mirror images of each other in MANY ways!!)
To think people were so touchy back then it was controversial to admit people went to the bathroom! This show was one of the first to show families fighting, married people sleeping in the same bed and a pregnant woman! No more "Leave It To Beaver" phoniness!
Frankly, by not inviting Archie, the Jeffersons were really putting Edith on the spot. I could never attend an event to which my spouse was not invited.

The interesting thing about this show is that somehow Archie is loveable even though he's quite the bigot. Maybe it's because his simple-minded ignorance isn't overtly cruel or hateful - just obnoxious (but hilarious). Where as now-a-days, there is really nothing funny about being a bigot/racist/chauvinist/hater/whatever. It is all very mean-spirited, hostile and hateful. In All in the Family they may have insulted and exasperated one another, but underneath it all there was basically good will.
Excuse me but there are always gonna be those kinds of people. No one said it was funny and these shows handled a lot of serious issues. Sometimes they got their behinds handed to them. Millennials want everything syrupy sweet.
