Ruderi Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi Amantea - Calabria Italia

Dopo la definitiva riconquista di Amantea da parte dei Bizantini (1031-1032) si installò sulle pendici dell'altura del castello una comunità di religiosi basiliani di rito greco, che fondò la chiesa di San Basilio, forse sul sito di un'antica moschea, vestigio della dominazione araba su Amantea.
Nel dicembre 1121 papa Callisto II, in viaggio verso Reggio Calabria, venne ospitato dai monaci basiliani di Amantea nel loro cenobio.
Possiamo supporre che nel corso del XII secolo il cenobio decadde, poiché nel 1216 il beato Piero Catin, compagno di San Francesco d'Assisi, assieme ad altri religiosi, si installò nell'antico cenobio basiliano fondando un convento francescano e l'attigua chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi.
After the definitive reconquest of Amantea by the Byzantines (1031-1032) a community of Basilian religious of the Greek rite settled on the slopes of the castle hill and founded the church of San Basilio, perhaps on the site of an ancient mosque, vestige of the Arab domination of Amantea.
In December 1121 Pope Callistus II, on his way to Reggio Calabria, was hosted by the Basilian monks of Amantea in their monastery.
We can assume that during the XII century the monastery declined, since in 1216 the blessed Piero Catin, companion of San Francesco d'Assisi, together with other religious, settled in the ancient Basilian monastery founding a Franciscan convent and the adjacent church of St. Francis of Assisi.
