I stumbled upon “slap chop” painting a few years ago by accident and only later realized that it was called that. It’s one of my preferred painting methods
I really like this technique for beginners. I've been painting for 35 years and it took many years to get any decent results. This is great for armies of skeletons and stuff.
Thanks you for watching!
I like this technique in general! After being a hobby gamer for nearly 45 years, I’ve learned that I hate painting. It’s just not fun for me so I don’t want to get better if that means it takes longer. A fast effective method is amazing for those of us who love minis but not the process of painting them.
Agreed the gray armor ever grows at my house.
love this technique for all my demon models and ogres haha
Love using slapchop. It has completely changed my painting process.
Love this kind of content!
A lot of people just can't be bothered to paint their minis, wether it is for roleplay or their army. But really, this shows that with a minimum of effort you can make something that will stand out on the table!
Thanks for watching!
Speed paints are helpful. I struggle because I want to practice diff techniques all the time. I spend hours on a mini that should only take me one.
@@Dice_Dish I often buy 2-3 of the same model so I can practice.
Thanks for reminding me to quit slacking off and paint my damn minis!
Love Speed Paints and Slapchop. This method has allowed me to actually get minis done for my players and look great at the same time. Nice video and nice job on the mini!
Thanks for watching!
I haven’t tried speed paint yet, but I’ve seen this technique and I’m definitely wanting to try it! The mini looks great!
Yes, looks like the Prof has given me a homework assignment. Oh no! my wallet!
Thank you for watching!
Smash that like button people! Let's keep the craft in dungeon craft : )
Excellent short form video on slap chopping. I'm in my first few months of painting and after many hours of youtube research, this summarizes the method that I've decided to use to paint unprimed models. When I have bought preprimed wizkids ones, I just roll with their white primer. It takes me a lot longer than 15 minutes to do this process, but I'm still learning.
Thank you for watching!
I started painting 10 years ago. I spent this weekend painting a single mini over 10 hours. But she turned out beautiful. I have a hard time speed painting. This video was very helpful.
@@Dice_Dish any tips for a new painter?
Brilliant video and a great technique. I started using this last year and have virtually no unpainted miniatures left!
Cool!
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 Now I need to buy more minis!!
Good short video about slapchopping, kind of needed it been looking for one that wasnt twenty minutes long
Exactly!
Everyone's going on about the craft in Dungeon Craft. Just here to let you know we're also anxiously awaiting the DUNGEON. Always love your stuff. You've been a big inspiration and guide as I jumped into the OSR and started up some OSE for family.
The Lost City is coming and will be worth the wait.
You got trader Joe just a few days ago... Lol
this is how I prep my kids' minis for painting! Thanks for sharing ProfDM!
Thanks for watching!
Underpainting (or SlapChop as the internet has taken to calling it) is a very old painting technique.
super easy to learn and do. You can do your initial coat in different colors besides gray to come up with different effects, for example if you wanted to start with a base Olive color and drybrush up your highlights, your skin tones will have a much more natural look.
you could do the same with purples for darker completions as well.
I typically don''t go full black as I feel it overpowers the colors too much, I work with medium grays and brighten from there.
But every mini is an experiment and you should try different things.
it's the journey that makes the artist.
Good advice.
I am having fun doing wild and unnatural paint jobs... I have yet to paint a player character because I'm still intimidated by trying to get skin tones right and smaller scale.
I'll keep your tips in mind.
Um. Wow. This might be a complete game changer for my table top! That is amazing! Literally for YEARS, I have had a mountain of minis that have remained unpainted because I thought I didn't have the time!
Awesome tutorial! Thank you for helping us with the hobby!
Puttin' the Craft back into Dungeon Craft!
You've even convinced my wife that painting minis isn't as intimidating as she thought - now I'm going to hide my brushes - lol 🤣
Cool. I hope she discovers the joy of painting.
I'm slowly working towards having my wife learn to paint minis. She's already a good artist so it shouldn't be a stretch.
@@matthewmcguigan4293 ahh, persuasion in action! Need to resort to the prosecco or the good whisky - 'cause, 'candy's dandy but liquor's quicker!' (Now was that Ogden Nash, or Willy Wonka) 😉
Joking aside, it sounds like a great plan. Two pairs of hands will get through full armies or dungeons of minis so much quicker and it's good to work on things together. Better than just dropping-off, drooling and snoring in front of the TV. 😁
Slap Chop is really great for both beginners and those who are speed/batch painting a lot of miniatures, most likely for miniature war games.
PDM putting the Craft back in DungeonCraft! I love to see it!
I need to do this with my anachrony mech minis
Good luck! Show them off on the FB group!
Nice to see another painting video. Didn't know I missed seeing them until now.
Orcs on the way.
Quick and easy with really convincing results, the best thing about playing tabletop is you do NOT need to spend so much time on every detail at painting minis because you won't even see them at the table without picking up the mini! The overall cool looking effect and consistency is what you need. Also a tip for priming/basing minis: you may use dark grey instead of black and very light grey instead of white while basing and/or highlighting (I do it myself and IMO it is better :D )
Good tips!
Great job. Love to see more like this.
I started using the slap chop technique about a year ago and now it’s all I use. Like you mentioned, I like to do a highlight layer of white dry brush after the gray, but essentially the same method. Table ready in very little time. Love it.
Excellent crafting video, Professor!
Thanks Professor! I love your painting and crafting lessons!
Thank YOU for watching!
As always, I love your focus on quick and good looking results for your crafts. Thanks for the video professor!
I love Creature Caster! Phenomenal models!!
awesome work!, and the details eally elevate the work!
Slap chop is great for beginners and kids. My young son didn't much enjoy miniature painting until I thought him slap chop. Now he loves painting his figs.
I enjoy the technique very much so. A couple pointers...Spend a lot of time getting those grey and white dry brush steps in good. A good quality large makeup brush works well. Don't use a paper towel to take the paint off. You'll create a lot of texture on the miniatures from strands of paper towel that will get on the miniature. Use a texture pallet instead. Also, slap chop doesn't work well on flat surfaces, it works best on textures surfaces. Thankfully, most of Fantasy models are highly textured. For flat surfaces you want to mix in other techniques such as layering and glazing. Lastly, after doing slap chop go in a do some highlights (as shown in the video). It really helps take the model to another level.
I've been speed painting an army of gnolls, and they turned out excellent for spending so little time on them. I'm really impressed with the results.
Thanks for watching this video! When I released it, it bombed. But it continues to grow more popular. Which is cool, because I like crafting vids.
Awesome. I have never painted a mini before. This was super fun!
Great video! Minis, like most works of art, are never finished but abandoned. You can spend as much or as little time on them as you want... the secret is that you just put paint on it until you're personally happy, and then you're done!
perfection is achieved if there is nothing you can leave out not if there is nothing to add anymore.
Imma share this to my board game buddies with flat grey miniatures!
Speed paints are great.
My other go-to is to prime white, use washes or speed paints, then once it dries do a head to toe dark wash to shade and unify the colors. Optional quick highlight after that, like you did.
Easy, fast, clear. Outstanding :)
Glad it helped!
I have been slap chopping for about a year now. I love it, a quick way to get good looking miniatures on the table.
I haven't painted a miniature in about thirty years now. I'm much more theater of the mind and don't usually feel the need for visual aids. But this technique looks so straightforward that I'm tempted to give it a go sometime. Thanks for sharing this.
I love these videos!!! This is what started me on this channel.
Wow, i never seen something this kind of stuff to be that simple!
That's pretty much how I do it nowadays 👍🏻 I had like a 10 years hyatus on mini painting, then the contrast / speedpaint technology brought me back in during the pandemic, and I totally love it.
I have no need to do more involved painting, and just want table ready for my stuff. This is very helpful. Thank you.
I plan to take my newbie group through a painting day (I printed them miniatures of their characters). I already have the Army Painter Speed Paint 2 starter set, too, so this will be a great way to bring them into painting as well.
I was an early adopter of the speed paint/highlight combo, and recommend it. The highlights add quite a bit to the model, and can be done later when you have time. However, Prof. DM missed a step. When you're done with a model you should protect it with a matte or dullcoat clear spray. (Although I suppose one could argue that's technically not part of painting a figure.)
p.s. Hey, DB, have fun on your holiday! 😁
I did forget! Next time!
I love slapchop, thanks to it even my butter hands can paint something decent.
This is awesome, and super helpful! I’ve always been mildly intimidated about getting minis due to having to paint them!
Great work, we love to see it. 🎉
Nice tutorial!
I like seeing everybody's different ways of painting things.
Army painter has some great primers washes and paints 👍
I also like Creature caster I have a ton of their minis. Including the pre-order for their new Warrior Dragon.
I just got a speedpaint set yesterday. Just in time. Thanks Professor DM!
You touched on some of my favorite painting channels. I wish there were more overlap between my D&D creator favs and my painting favs. T
I'm glad you covered this method. I just recently found out about it and I'm Loving it. It's perfect for my needs. My minis don't need to be perfect, just not grey. I'm thinking about seeing what I can do with thinned down craft paint overtop of the slap chop method to save on cost.
Bravo. That was very efficient
You make it look so easy! 😮
Ty Professor! You make all aspects of our hobby very accessible! Lowering that intimidating barrier to entry! Great job as always! But you left off one important detail...that was a "+1 Brush of Inspiration" not a simple synthetic from hobby lobby!
Some people give the Slapchop method crap, but if you want to get some minis done fast and on the table it's a great method to use and has basic steps that are great for beginners. Plus, you can always lavish on more detail, like highlights, later and experiment with more subtle gradients using various grays and whites (or even other colors) and lighter dry brushing to really build up the transitional effects. But if you just want to get some dudes on the table for everyone's PCs to fight, it's the way to go..
I have been wanting to get into painting minis now that I have UDT. Just planning to use for fights. I prefer mostly theater of the mind, but battles with painted minis adds some excitement. I have been looking at the Speedpaints as I am not too picky, just something quick and decent. Looks like I have a my project over thanksgiving and christmas break
If I could like this video twice, I would.
Good stuff PDM. Some motivation to get caught up on my miniature backlog
Awesome dude! Love the painting vids.
Funny, I just fell into the speed paints rabbit hole about two weeks ago, after getting a resin printer. Now my basement is starting to fill up with minis that almost look like they’ve been painted by someone with a hint of talent!
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Thank u. This is exactly what I wanted.
Super cool, PDM! I'm gonna check out Creature Casters
Awesome! Thank you!
Edit: it’d be great to see how you set yourself up to paint. Kind of a mis en place for modeling, as it seems there’s a not insignificant amount of setup to have all your paints and tools and table ready to go. Anyone can tell there’s a lot of experience behind this video.
Although, if the channel already has a video like that, could I ask that a link be included in future painting or modeling videos?
For example, while I can’t speak for everyone, but when the channel has kind of alluded to “how to setup” in TTRPG reviews, I always appreciate it (especially when minimalist is appropriate).
Either way, thank you again. Love me some DungeonCraft!
I'll show you in the next video. Thanks for the suggestion!
Not interested in miniatures, still watching to the end for the outroooooo. And I was not disappointed 🤣
The white coat could also have been done as a zenithal prime. You cover the entire thing with the black primer first. Then you go over that with a white or at least a lighter colored primer only from the direction that light would fall on it (you of course decide where that is). This tends to make a big difference in your final results.
I'm a fan of Vallejo Xpress Color paint. I don't even bother with "slapchop" I just spray paint white and then brush on Vallejo Xpress Color as aproporiate. Looks amazing.
Thanks! Gonna try this technique and see if I can reduce my pile of shame.😅
Slapchop!
From Warhammer to D&D!
First saw it demo'd on The Honest Wargamer's Channel
Yes!! Massive. Thank you. I love this content // may it garner you billions of views // keep up the good work good sir // the internet sends electronic hugs // thanks again.
Thank you. Please share it!
Great video!
I like painting well enough but just don't have the time. It takes months for me to get anything done using traditional methods but I can knock out a bunch of minions over a lunch break with the slap chop method.
And just as you said in your video, if you go over heavily with a mid gray first and then lighter with a linen white you can get edges and highlights that really pop. And that blood red looks fantastic!
Thanks for another great video. I love that you show what and where you used each paint color. Super useful. Are the "speed" paints you used closer to shade or contrast or somewhere in between? Also just wanted to say Hello, RUclips algorithm! Treat this video with kindness please.
I followed this video from my first slap chop paint job
Can I use normal colors for slapchop, not only contrasts and speedpainters?
Just contrasts and speed paints. THEN you can highlight with regular paints. Cheers!
Thank you sm for this prof!!!!!!
My friend used to swear by airbrushing. Said it saved him hundreds of hours, and his results ran from great to spectacular.
PDM inspires DMs and players to pick up a brush and enhance their games!
I want to also call out the channel @GirlPainting. I learned everything i learned decades ago by watching her channel! Great to see some crafting vids PDM!
T h a n k y o u ❤
Awesome!!
Nice stuff
I love that PDM is so properly "grognard" that he thinks Creature Caster is a "new company."
very nice
What do I think? I think I love AP's Speedpaints and the "Slap Chop" technique. I'm a boardgame painter, and I love how fast I can get really great results.
I've never done much highlighting, but you've inspired me to try it out. Also, I think I'll try a non-speedpaint for blood-effects the next time. It looks great! :)
Thank you SO much for watching this. It did not get a lot of views.
"There are pustules that blur the line between skin and apron" - - most Dungeon Craft painting video line ever
I think slap chop is a great way to get into painting and honestly its looks nice on the table, but I think it should be used as a stepping stone to learning how to paint miniature properly, I kind of use slap chop for minis where the series doesn't use very much detail in them, like for instance the final girl minis, but when you have games where the miniatures use good quality minis with sharp details then I will always go full out on them, like Oathsworn or an awaken realms game.
Very cool
I use reaper paints but I also do not paint a lot anymore
Oh no! Deathbringer MIA!
Yay painting
Hi! I'm new at painting minis and I'd like to save as much money as possible. What do you recommend me to use instead of speed paints as a cheaper option? Maybe acrylic mixed with other chemicals? Thank you in advance
They are the cheapest option. Acrylic paints are ink mixed with medium. Goobertown Hobbies, another RUclips channel, has lots of videos on how to make your own. BUT...it's a process of trial and error and you will spend more money on ink and medium than you will by just buying the starter speed paints.
Slapchop. So easy a professor can do it. 😂😂
Question, Professor:
Which houserule do you prefer?
Combine STR and CON into "Brawn"?
Or splitting DEX into two: Agility (for AC, Stealth, Reflex Saves) and Dexterity (for ranged/finesse attks, slight of hand, lockpicking, etc) ?
Appreciate your thoughts.
Will there be a Dua Lipa miniature to accompany Deathbringer in the future? I'm sure we'd all enjoy that! ;)
Yummy comment for the algorithm.
edit: this does make me want to convert from digital to miniatures.
Do i need particular paints or would i be able to thin vallejo paints to get that same flow
Thanks
Currently remodeling a room in my house for printing and want to start painting my own mini's. Do you recommend clear coating the slap chopped mini's?
Depends on if they are showpieces or practical play pieces. If you expect players to handle them, I'd use Army Painter Quickshade, then a Matt spray.
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 thanks for the quick reply. Sounds great that's what I'll go with then since most will be play pieces
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 sorry just another quick question I was going to paint a faulty dragon mini as my first paint but I just used cheap rustoleum primer and it seems to rub off on my skin almost like chalk when I touch it. Do I need to get army painter or like colour forge primer and if I do will it adhere to the resin better?
I always needed too long for my board game minis so i didn't really started for the most games. Now i don't have an excuse to not paint them. Slap chop has a decent outcome.
What kind of paint or technique are you using for the thin paint over the grey tones?
Deathbringer needs a parody of Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” called “Decapitating.”
Is this done using 'contrast paint'?
Speed paint.
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 Is it similar?
@@carlmurphy2416 Yes. Personally, I prefer Army Painted because of the bottles. They don't tip over.
Cool
