  • With off season, there are still some important markers that you need to be aware of. These markers will be different to on season as you have different goals during this phase.
Here are 3 signs you’re tracking well on your off-season.
    1. Your overall bodyweight has not deviated more than 10% of your peak week or stage weight.
This particularly the case if you’re competing annually.
Remember you need to put on weight and some bodyfat to build muscle, but you can only lose so much weight leading into a comp... and you want to retain as much of the muscle mass you have gained as possible... otherwise that’s a lot of wasted effort.
    2. You’re eating well, not hungry but also not so rigid that you can enjoy off plan items without guilt.
If you’re too rigid with your food rules and too strict with your compliance to your plan, off-season will feel less fun, and you may end up binging anyway due to the lack of perceived flexibility.
On season will also be harder as you can’t dial in your eating without seemingly breaking it!
Eating in off season should have structure and will be more compliant than a non-bodybuilder - but it should feel relaxed and mostly effortless - in the same way getting to the gym does... it’s all part of the baseline lifestyle.
    3. Your strength continues to get better. Training is the best part of the sport, its why most of us get into competing, because we love lifting weights and getting better at it.
Your off season should feel enjoyable, but also like you’re working. You’re eating enough, you’re getting more rest and hopefully you have other things in place to support your training, muscle growth and recovery. As a result, your strength should also be increasing.
Let me know in the comments if you’re in off season and what’s working well for you at the moment.
