As a Welsh speaker it's really nice to see Benjamin Zephaniah challenge the idea that English is the only language in the UK. "Britishness" is too often viewed as some ubiquitous Englishness. The idea that the monarchy for example is something special is also a joke. The English monarchy spent centuries oppressing the Welsh and now we have to put up with Charles swanning around claiming he's the Prince of Wales.

This is the danger of nationalism, it can start off looking pretty good because it unifies people until someone steps out of the national identity, then they are 'not British' and suddenly seen as the enemy. Then we can restrict their freedoms because they are no longer one of us. A perfect example of the 'us and them' dynamic.
I don't think people should be encouraged to live separately, I think people should be encouraged to live together without needing to unify under one identity. It may be idealistic, but if you're going to encourage something, surely that is preferable to national pride.

But as for people you don't want to live alongside, you don't have to. I'm not even sure I would encourage everyone to live alongside, mainly because it simply wouldn't work, but there's a middle ground between living alongside everyone and living as a proud British person. Live in countries, call that country Britain, but why do we have to be proud of it? I don't understand that. I understand why people are proud but not why they should be.
Howard D. Thompson Because even if it isn't "logical" to be proud of the place you're born in, it's still better than the alternative. Japan hasn't had 1400 of their children raped by foreigners.

Border controls and being proud of your country are two separate issues, they may have links but they are not the same. I could say "tighten the borders" (which I wouldn't but anyway) and I wouldn't have to be proud of my country.

Promoting cultural identity is often vague. Sometimes the best way to promote a culture is to actually satire it; The Simpson's is a perfect example of how far American culture can reach a wide audience by satire.

I think what they're trying to say is that we might have a lot of different views and different religions, different backgrounds etc. etc. but that having an underlying sense of being British is a good thing.

Yes, the Celts and Silures and Picts, came here (or were already here) in a very different time, for very different reasons, with very different global circumstances. No one who lived in Britain at the time that the Romans were landing, would say that having Roman culture pushed on them was a good thing. Yes they have become a part of our identity over time, but it certainly wasn't what we wanted, and it would be idiotic to want more of it. One also cannot compare the numbers, they are literally incomparable, the levels of immigration we have now, to the levels of the past. The Romans invaded and conquered. They also consisted of western Europeans who introduced hundreds of advancements to the British way of life. Nobody complained.

To me, multiculturalism is immigration from many cultures all living spaced out among the host country, who are the majority. People who integrate and learn the language and adopt many of the host nations customs and lifestyle choices. This surely should of been the reason to chose Britain in the first place. Of course you can have freedom of religion, sexuality and wear what you want.

There is no such thing as a United European Identity. I'm proud of the history of my native country,and I always place my own country before any other country in Europe. I feel no loyalty to other European countries.

I'm a Kiwi, I've lived in Australia for 12 years and have Australian citizenship but my friends and family still consider me a Kiwi. I know what a British identity is - just the same as people assume my husband is going to drink a lot of beer when we travel because he's Australian - bit stereotypical but we are totally proud of our origins. If these people don't know what a British person is then chances are they are not British and just have personal insecurities about their own identities. I understand a person's need to belong but a culture is not built in three or four generations, if not, in many hundreds of years. If they are totally "Britisized" fine, one can fully identify with the British culture. But they need to acknowledge it's not the same culture of their ancestors, their food, religion background, rituals and habits, costumes, art and symbols. Nothing racist about that. A French person would fall in the same definition, even though much closer to begin with. Trying to stun a culture for multiculturalism is actually denying the host culture. Defining Political Correctness based on your own present culture is wrong. Right and wrong should be defined through historical experience and enhancement of altruism, not by carping something as "British" or "American" values. Better to study the mistakes of the past and build a culture that can adapt to new changes.

While I wait, I'll add that you should probably think about your ancestors: look far enough, and you'll find that they came from elsewhere around Europe, migrated from around the world, bringing with them their own baggage of culture. And though there are always cases of people refusing to integrate, the vast majority happily try and learn: it is human desire to fit in. Now, if it is easy to fit in is another question: integration programs are scarce, and funding is always being reduced.
But here's the thing: don't expect people to leave behind their traditions. We all have some happiness linking us to old memories, and actions, beliefs, food, will always be a way to bring those back.
The culture of these small Isles of Britain has constantly changed over time; why stop at any one point? And more still, what rationale for choosing a specific point? ("You're Christian? How dare you, out of this country, where we pagans are the REAL brits.").
As a side note, remember that while being one of the main colonising forces in history may have given you plenty of wealth, you also forced your culture (the one you had at the time) onto all your colonies (not to mention plundered theirs.). So if you're still wondering why the UK has such an attraction to foreigners around the world, you might want to go back and criticise your royalty for imposing said culture.

Your argument is in itself largely inconsistent. Let me break it down:
1) "Curry is not Indian, it's Thai". Well, I'm glad you agree it ain't British. Secondly, that's not entirely true. At all. Curry comes from the tamil work kuri (Being of tamil descent, I can attest to this.). It is native of the entire Indus Valley [1]. However, in no way am I saying that curry doesn't exist anywhere else! The intermingling of cultures has led to curry being all over the world, so I'm glad that happened.
2) Please note the irony in saying you have a coworker of Indian descent, and then going on to generalise by quoting: "Get a job? Not bloody likely!". Have a little respect for people doing honest work, regardless of where they come from.
3) I'm surprised to hear you think "no non-Whites people" accept "blondes, brunettes and redheads as well as green-, blue-eyed, grey-eyed and brown-eyed members". I come from Malaysia, a multicultural society, by far and large (68%) muslim, where people of every creed are accepted. And that's only one example to negate your argument. Have you seen Egypt? South Africa? Brazil? Just because it's less common in some places doesn't mean it's not accepted.
As for the UK having the most beautiful women in the world, you might want to open your horizons and explore a bit mate. Lots of gorgeously smart and beautiful people out there.
4) Finally, quoting the BNP website speaks volumes. Dividing people into "White" and "non-White" is such a binary way of looking at things, and that by far does not encapsulate the world, in a way only such an ultra-nationalist party could do.
As a side note, the BNP is no longer registered in the electoral commission (as of January 2016), because it failed to pay its on registration fee [2], on fraud and corruption claims. So much for issues of only foreigners stealing money.

Interesting, as a sense of identity is crucial; yet historically there is a culture of britishness, cultural dimensions, culture facts: that all exist...However, intercultural exchanges may have distorted or augmented this...yet this brings up more questions on wether cultural conflicts are resolved or not....
The fact is these idiots have absolutely no idea of Britains cultural dimensions or even basic critical incidents that have occurred. In this regard none of the people who have spoken are in a position to argue what is and is not British, especially in the modern context.

It's not really an insult, he's just a professional victim.
I think he was joking, he kind of had a little smile not log after he said it - he is always smiling though so it's hard to tell.
Unfortunately I feel that he is very wrong. Studied this area (Suffragettes and Suffragists in the early 20th century) and historians "generally" agree that the Suffragettes who employed violent tactics (arson, vandalism...) did not secure the vote for women in england but actually furthered the prejudice against them. The Suffragists who were peaceful however, who knuckled won and helped the home front effort in WW1, working within the law, did get the vote.

When my family moved to Britain in the 50s we were always conscious not to call ourselves British as this was felt dishonest by “stealing” the ethnic identity of the true British. I was brought up in a generation that believed that you were born British you do not become British. Same is true ,of-course, for all ethnicities. So we always described ourselves as British citizens which were fine.
British-ness is an amalgamation of English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish. No person born in Great Britain should call themselves British, when they were born in one of the four countries that make up the United Country of Britain. People born in England are English and their culture is English. People born in Wales are Welsh and their culture is Welsh and the same for people born in Scotland and Northern Ireland. All people in Britain should be proud of the country of their birth in Britain or the country culture they have adopted to live in in Britain. To integrate their equal values with the religion of their choice. People of the world did not emigrate to Britain to be foreigners! Allow the people of the world to identify themselves with the culture of one of the 4 Government legislated cultures of Britain in birth or adoption for a future of belonging to the amalgamated Country of Britain, to work and prosper together for our ever!
