Join us for the 20th Annual Tool Show & Sale on August 5, 2012 from 9am - 1pm. Lots of stories and knowledge about the history of these tools. This is a unique show, there's nothing quite like it in the area.

I don't know where the guy with the soldering irons(coppers) got his info, but he is way off base. As of today, Easter Sunday 2022, I can still buy irons of this type from Stortz. The number on the side is the weight of a PAIR of irons. Hence, a #4 weighs 2lbs. I have never seen anyone heat an iron with a blow torch, and my grandfather was a union pipefitter. He soldered with a torch all the time. No, I have a small galvanized stove called a fire pot. I make a charcoal fire to heat the irons. They come in pairs so one is heating while you use the other. Their use is becoming rare. Acetylene and propane are much safer ways to solder. They don't get as hot as coal, though. Another thing. The steel handle is cast through the copper head. While you can replace the wood handles, you CANNOT replace steel part without melting and recasting the whole iron. Some of his irons may be true antiques, most are not, and he doesn't have a clue about them, except that they were used for roofing by a tinsmith such as myself. My bucket of irons has more sizes and shapes than his does, all modern, all paired.
