What a blast it was being a teen in this era, Van Halen was my favorite, every album was awesome, the good ol days music like this are my oldies now, where did the time go?
This album gets alot of crap for having so many covers but I always loved the energy of this album, especially this underrated Kinks cover. Thanks for pulling this one out, brings me back to when I first heard it in the early 80s.
The album was rushed. Wasnt supposed to happen..but when the record company seen how their one off cover of Pretty Woman did they forced the band back into the studio right after touring and they wanted an album ASAP!!! being no time to write all new material they did half album of covers and half original material just to get it out there and go IMMEDATELY back to touring. Album recorded in like 10 days or something like that.
@@markherring3513 Actually, someone at Warner Brothers (might have been Templeman or Mo Ostin) said something to the effect that "taking a hit song and covering it was easy money," which is why they did so many covers. Ed was also furious when Dave and Ted stole the synth music you hear on Dancing In The Streets. He had planned to use it on something else later. It was also Dave's idea to do Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) with Jan Van Halen on the clarinet. My favorite song off this album is the Full Bug. The nice acoustic intro by Dave, the overall beat, and the harmonica solo...that song slays it.
You’re right, their first album blew the doors off of the Rock world. Expectations were high, and quite possibly unattainable regardless. I’ve never felt the need to hate on VH, but let’s say this wasn’t their finest album. But there are many inspired moments throughout this and all of their releases. EVH, RIP.
I like it because it introduced me to Van Halen. It was the first VH album I bought. I has not ages as well as other Roth era albums. I love Mike’s bass playing on the version. Makes it sound funky.
I knew that none of them, except maybe DLR, liked covering Dancing In The Streets. But I didn't know that Eddie and Alex didn't like the whole record? i wonder why, there are great songs on Diver Down!
@@RICHIEV333 l think l like just about every Original Halen song. The first track off their 1982 album Diver Down. Got a lot of covers, due to pressure from Warner Bros. Records to release another one so soon. But check out Big Bad Bill, it features clarinet by Eddie and Alex's dad Jan Van Halen. It's worth a listen!
@@pudgydaddy Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now and Just A Gigolo were the only 2 songs used in Boardwalk Empire that I even recognized and that was thanks to Dave.
This is a cover of a Kinks song -- from the 60s. Think about it. The Kinks' parents were kids during the depression. Daddy wouldn't have had nice toys. And Mommy was actually a "good girl" -- because the depression era was more straight laced than the "roaring 20s" that preceded it.
Van Halen could do a whole concert of nothing but Kinks covers. One of the best cases of one great inspiring another. Perhaps not up there with Buddy Holly's influence on John Lennon, but still damn awesome.
...when VH covered a song, they always claimed that they "VanHalen-ized" the song.... Gave it some oomph!! Oh this song makes me feel good. So free n fun... Great choice!!! Another great cover is: Dancing In the Street ~ ohhh so good.... and Eddie. Oh my...wait til your ears in headphones catch that solo. Woot!
usually I agree they Van Halen does an amazing job on covers.. but this doesn't get me as hyped as the garage crunch of the kinks original. The original sounds more fun to my ears.
@@THEDEEPDIVE I prefer the vocals by The Kinks on this one. So true and real. But I like Eddie's creative performance on the guitar. Fun... and a little whammy here n there.
You guys are doing a pretty good job on the Van Halen hits. So many hits to listen to. Some of my favorites are. I'll wait, Right now, Don't tell me what love can do, Finish what ya started, and Black and blue.
"Where Have All The Good Times Gone" was originally done by The Kinks in 1965. Van Halen also covered "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks. The Kinks released it in 1965 in England.
This reminds me of the end of High School when you have to kind of start adulting , Good times never had a second thought , but when you have to start thinking about what you will be in your life , ya gotta second guess a lot of good times,
A Kinks cover, like 'You Really Got Me' off their debut, which Eddie's iconic 'Eruption' solo led into. The Kinks were a precursor to heavy riff rock and thus metal.
Fun note: You can distinctly hear them have a little fun wordplay and sing 'where have all the good DRUGS gone' buried in the mix. They were definitly partying hard and having fun back in 1983 ... right before the epic 1984 album was released. ✌️😎

Push Comes To Shove has one of Eddie's best solos, too. I've always liked Hear About It Later along w/ those other songs listed. One of the 3 songs in the 81 Oakland video set, important one.
