The name is very old and had quite an impact when the band were originally formed (1987). Consequently, that could be a reason why a person could view their current music incongruent with the band name. Make no mistake though, Rotting Christ is fxxking awesome.
Rotting Christ have some quite unusual pieces that fall outside of western metal tradition, e.g. Greek, Hindu inspired, etc. Check out more of them - don't be turned off by their name :)
If you haven't checked them out yet, I highly recommend Cynic. They just put out a new album, which I think came as a surprise to everyone as two of their founding members died. But it's absolutely fantastic. Sean and Sean would be proud.
I got into Rotting Christ BECAUSE of the name hahaha there's not such thing as bad publicity, but these guys are highly underrated still! And to be honest, if we're picking our music based on the band's name, then we're missing the point, don't you think?
I love Opeth :) Thanks for the review ! If I may, you need to listen the whole album, "the Raven" isn't the best song of the album, one imho :) Cheers and keep it up !
This will sound cocky and arogant but those that created the religion have the intelectual property of it and therefore the ability to comment on it any day if something goes wrong. At least thats one of thei rules of their civilisation so even if you can understand it you need to respect it. Long story short RC been Hellenes and quite aware of said religion in detail,no translations,no interpretations,no alterations to promote interests just plain source matterial which makes it acurate historically, choose that name in order to make first of all a statment on the roten body of christ which is the church and secondly cause at the time they were teenagers and wanted the attention. Yes that name closed quite a lot of doors and there's protests here and there at their lives but who cares as long as the protestorts dont go boom?
A nice tune in the beginning to let's say half way. After a while I got distracted. I lost a bit of interest. It stayed the same. The dark undertone was the thing I liked in this song.

Well, this is one way to get students to learn some poetry.
I hope you'll let us know what your acquaintance/the guy/friend thought of Opeth.
