BJJ White Belt Unexpectedly Discovers New Way of Rolling

  • Have you ever felt physically run down but then end up having one of the best BJJ training sessions you can remember?
    Well in this video I share how not feeling your best can be a good thing for your rolling in BJJ. This comes from a questions from our friend who was coming back after an illness and said that he rolled really well by being focused on being defensive since his body was tired from the sickness.
    In the video I share a story from when I was a Brown Belt rolling with a Black Belt training partner. And in the story I was in a very similar situation. I wasn't feeling too well but I was preparing for a competition so I went to the gym to train.
    During the Brazilian Jiujitsu training that day I had to focus on being defensive at first because I didn't have the energy I normally did.
    What was a amazing was that by being more relaxed and less aggressive during the roll I performed better. This was a bit of a shock to me but I talk more about it in the video.

    Apparently old school Ju-Jitsu is all about being calm and as a brand new guy, I know I’m gonna die at the gym. So I just lay back and try and figure out what the better guy is doing so I can learn and it evidently works a lot better than when I’m grinding it out.

      Yeah me too, the few people I've rolled with just say "okay, let's go" and have me try and pick them apart for a few seconds like a headstart before ripping me apart. The purple belts are great teachers

      I spazed at first but then a friend and lifelong practitioner kept preaching "defense first. It's not about winning right now it's about survival."
      When I roll with upper belts, depending who they are, they let you go for it then being defensive is nil.

    After two months of training I'm starting to understand what is happening during the roll. Yesterday I was relying a lot on my guard and I did my first successful triangle choke and a kimura from guard. What a great feeling!

    I teach kenpo, and I LOVE seeing a student have a light bulb moment, really makes me feel like I made a difference in someone's life. Seriously, I LOVE teaching.

    When I returned after five year layoff, as a purple belt, the game had changed. White belts felt like blue belts and blue belts felt like purple belts. I was getting tapped by simple stuff. To counteract that, I focused on defense for about two months. Shrimping out as people passed guard, the iron squirrel defense (Thanks Chewy!), the old man defense (Roy Harris) and simple mount and side control escapes. I also picked up the half guard as a defense. --- I realized I could be in trouble, but stay out of danger. It allowed me to relax and soon I felt like my old self and better. People would make mistakes while transitioning due to being frustrated and I could escape and turn the tables on them.

It confuses a lot of people and gives you time to work a new technique.     This is a very important lesson for anyone coming from wrestling, we are always taught to "go go go go, get the points, get the pin". I was very blessed to have a professor that taught me this lesson in my very first week of training.

    I've never been able to sit out during rolling. I show up tired from work or from my baby not sleeping well the night before and tell myself I'm not rolling but after warm up and technique I get so pumped that I don't care how tired I feel

    My instructors talk to me about this a lot, using too much muscle and not relaxing. I'm an older white belt 55 y.o. and I think a combination of adrenalin when rolling with big guys and upper belts, and, like you said, being too tied to the win. Unfortunately it's taking time for me to learn this. I finally think I've turned the corner and am learning to go lighter. It's funny that this is exactly what I've been working on.     It’s worth mentioning that when I first started I had wrestled for years before so I was a meathead but after a few weeks I realized it wasn’t working so then I went to be completely relaxed 100% of the time, which is also, not good… there’s a time and place for everything, you have to learn when it’s time to relax, and when it’s time to be aggressive

    I just got my first stripe on my white belt last night. It was a huge surprise and it made something click in my head. I had the best class yet. Point of the story is, I been watching all your videos for about 2 months now and you helped me tremendously. I don't think I'd be where I was without you bud. You were my Professor in my pocket lol.     A lot of battle strategy talks about the advantages of being on the defensive. You react instead of moving first and having opponents find an opening you left.
    But it’s kinda like being a pure counter striker, if everybody trained that way, nobody learns. It’s easiest to say go aggressive when sparring because both parties at least learning offense.
    I can still remember doing bottom position starting drills and just getting worked constantly. The first time I was able to actually get up and away was quite memorable.
    A lot of good can come from training with a disadvantage to overcome.
    Passive training also teaches you how to rest in a fight. Know you can be comfortable defending for a break and sit back, absorbing the way your opponent attacks.

    2 stripe white belt here, I moved and miss jujitsu so bad . These videos motivate me to get back into it. Its nerve racking to start at a new gym to me . Slowly getting the balls to show up.. thank you chew!

    I actually picked up on this in my first couple of rolls when I was a new white belt. I rolled with brown and black belts at first and since I was new, they pretty much just let me do whatever I wanted and just defended. They didn’t break a sweat and I just wore myself out. So much so I couldn’t breath at some points. I finally told myself, I really need to do what these black belts are doing and just slow down and stop between each move. I felt that once I started practicing that, it really changed my game.

    I got my 1st submission last night! Fresh whitebelt here only 2 weeks in. We did a few 2min rounds of rolling and I caught someone in solid armbar and it felt so good

    What a great question and an equally insightful response! I think you are exactly on point @chewjitsu when you say it is not being attached to the win. I just experienced this yesterday as a white belt too. I realized that I have been running out of energy, and so I started to play smarter. I started watching other people’s body language and it led me to play defensively against a really strong forward leaning aggressive player(usually how I start). He would drive hard, Id wear him out, and then I took his back each time. A friend even came over and said, “man it’s like your game is evolving!” It felt good to postpone the submission for an improvement in technique and overall game.

    Me too buddy. I actually feel more comfortable on my back letting people go for submissions. My defense has gotten pretty good. The moment they slip, I attack. Saves my energy and I rely on technique. I’m a strong guy and I could muscle through things but I rather build my technique. The best offense is a scary good defense

      @@DaveLowenstein I see your point as a spectator (although I disagree) but in my opinion it was up tp Galvao to progress beyond side control. If it took him 5 minutes to pass the guard and 6 to move past side control it's means Ryron's was as good as him. He was fighting one of the best bjj practitioners of all times and he got him tired, frustrated and would have probably won if it was a "no time limit" match, like the Gracies used to do

    It's so intresting how different mindsets and different systems work for different people. Usually during practice I don't care about winning at all and I am pretty defensive but as soon as it comes to exams and competition I'm more of an offensive fighter and the more skill and strength my opponent has the more offensive and strong I get. As soon as I have the mindset of wanting to win really badly I will usually. From all the competitions I had I lost one because I got matched with black belts as my division got cancelled that day. It's interesting to hear that other people work better when they don't pressure themselves.

    Hey brother, great video! I am new to jiu-jitsu but wrestled through college and this made me think of something I experienced in high school; the concept of energy management. I was never really strong so I heavily relied on defense to combat my opponents initial explosive power and that would allow me to "weather the storm" until attacking was more effective. Sounds like this white belt could also apply that to... not only the fact that defense style of jj might better suit him, but he can also manage his explosive energy a little better and use it more precisely/efficiently.
    Just a thought.

    I had the opposite experience. I was naturally disposed to rolling defensive off my back and it took me a long time to realize the value of good top pressure, passing, and control

      Same here! When I first started out, I mostly played a bottom, defensive game. That was helpful in a lot of ways, but now I'm incorporating more of a top game, especially passing and staying on top. It's helpful to have as many tools in the box as possible. But Chewy is definitely right about a more relaxed style.

      Oh sht i think i got why it burned, are you supposed to put it to prevent mat burns or do you put it ON mat burns to let them heal?

      @@Pwanx0w put it on your wound. But it has to be a scab first. If your wound is wet wait until it is dry. Then apply liquid bandage.

      I find against giant 300lb type guys if you just constantly find angles and grip fight for ages they get tired, then you do a sweep and play the bucking bronco game

      Sean Barker this. We had a guy at our gym we called the mountain and my only hope was to wear him out by reguarding/resetting and then going for subs. It’s what noguira did to bob sapp

    I got a 30 minute lecture from my coach a few weeks ago about how I need to not focus on winning, after I started doing what he said, I'm surviving a lot more and even getting some taps. 2 stripe white belt over here. It's fun watching your opponent tire out while you're chilling.

    I can't wait for my "light-bulb moment". I am four months in and feel so lost during rolling. During techniques and drills I am good, but as soon as we do rolling I blank out and have the "deer in headlights" moments. My training partners are awesome and don't go too fast so we don't gas out (most of us are in 35+ category). I feel like I am holding them back a bit because I just don't get rolling.

    Great answer. To add... the situation can change the answer a little bit. In a tournament with short time limits, it's important to score points. You can be defensive all you want for six minutes, but your opponent is scoring "advantage" points on you. The time is too short to wait for your opponent to gas out. No time limits (or long ones) play the game your way. see where it takes you.

    I trained from 2010-2012 and we worked on a more gentle way of doing JiuJitsu. I could barely work submissions from mount after almost 2 years of training, but spider guard, closed guard, tornado guard, etc. I could hit a ton of stuff playing defensively. Recently, I went back to train again (c. Jan 2019) and this place I went was just all about pressure and smashing and working top armbars, Americanas, etc. I almost felt like taking off my blue belt and putting on a white belt because 1. It had been so long and my fundamentals needed a lot of catching up 2. I could defend all day long with their white belts, but their seasoned guys were smashing me in a few seconds. I had never been exposed to that style before. It was a game changer.

    That's exactly how I spar. I get into a position where my opponent has to work really hard to try to escape - usually guard- and when they're tired, I go for a quick armbar or triangle.

    This one in particular is a great topic Chewie, because ever since I started BJJ (only still 2 stripe white) I've made my entire focus defensive rolling. My goal was: just survive! A friend who started at the exact same time as me put all his focus on submissions. When we roll, he seldom can tap me because of our vastly different styles. He resorts to brute strength often and that is how he gets me. Another really good friend at the gym just got his purple belt & he is my best rolling partner because its a slower less aggressive roll, but his skill level is far superior and I learn to avoid stupid mistakes that I get away with on lower belts. It's always a compliment when we can do a solid roll session & I don't get submitted by him as a purple. I'm going to carry on with my current goals till I hit 4 stripe & then I'll start learning how to submit. :P

    I hope this makes sense!! I was rolling with this Brown Belt we call him Big Dave!! and at one point I saw his arm and went for a Kamura well what happened as expected is that he got away and transition into my chest and as I feel the pressure he said "Do you think I was going to let you get away with a Kamura" and I said with whatever breath I had I said "I can only try" and kind of laugh about it, he laugh too and we kept rolling!!! I'm a white belt but I did enjoy the moment!! I joined for fitness and I have seen progress on that regard I don't mind getting beat, but when I see a slight chance of doing something I go for it. Most of the time I get flipped or submitted but I don't care I know eventually things will click!!

    As a white belt that has trained since October last year, it was the first ting i focused on. Staying relaxed, defending, getting smashed, tapping and seeing the techniques how to do them, how to counter them etc. this made my Defense and offence game much much better, i usually train 5-6 times a week, and i stay 1 hour overtime with another really good white belt, blue belt, purple belt or a brown belt and learning what they use and how they use them. My game increases every month, i can roll with the other higher belts, even tap them on footlocks, chokes, arm-bars etc. i can also stay relaxed against a heavier guy and do well against them. Being calm when you spar and when you drill has helped me become a good white belt.
    And defense can also do good as offence, f.eks with the gi you can set up a baseball choke when they pass your guard, then sweep them. I try to attack from every position i can, if someone has my back then i try to wrist lock them while I am getting my legs free and out of the position. I get myself into a bad position to work myself out of it. OFC i mess up and do plenty of mistakes, but that is how i learn. idc if i tap someone (if its one of my coaches, then its something else cuz I am getting smashed and destroyed everyday) its not that important, for me its how i tapped them and what i could have done better.
    Form my experience, Rush to become better, BUT don't Rush on tapping people, just get better. try new things, Fail then try again until you get it right.

    Chewy. First off. Found you from Eli knight. Glad I did. Love the way you instruct. And I’m a one year white belt. And I defensive by nature till I see an opportunity to strike. I’m glad to hear another white belt discovered this technique per say. My biggest problem is the attack. I’ve come to love lapel chokes and Kimura. And find it hard to attack all the time. Is it bad as a white belt. To be defensive and not attack. Or is it ok to just be defensive and attack when I’m ready.

    This helps alot.
    I was in bjj couple times. Different schools and I would try to use techniques and i would go aggressive and always get caught and submit. But i gotta try just taking it slow and go defensive only.

    There are so many styles that you can adopt, no need to limit yourself straight out of the gate. Some styles can include:
    -Aggressive smash and pass, finish from top. (Sometimes favored by former wrestlers)
    -Countersubbers, defend with pressure and catch quick submissions during position changes.
    -Turtling, all out defense from any position and wait for opponent to tire out.
    -The weighting game, use a combination of natural weight and technique to smother opponents from the top...and so many more!
    Find something that works for you, roll with it for a while, then switch it up.

    I have a young lad at my gym (13 years old) who's had the fortune to roll with Rener Gracie. He said the biggest thing he brought away from the roll was how relaxed and not moving he was throughout the entire thing. Especially when on top position.

      Hello, as new to BJJ only had a few classes under my belt I have a question. I have no idea how to roll obviously. Today I asked a guy if he wanted to practice with me, which he said he was about to leave, but then went on to roll with another person.
      How or when will this stage pass? If no one wants to roll with me because I'm new, how then will I learn? I understand I'm probably of no benefit for them, but then how does it work?

      @@Santiago-li7yl I'm not sure if this question was directed at me or if meant for Chewie but I can tell you what I think by using a metaphor I was taught.
      If someone is new to Jiu jitsu they will only have learned a couple of the hundreds of techniques out there. It's like learning a new language but only knowing a few letters of the alphabet. So if trying to roll with someone who has been practicing for longer, who can speak more of the language, your vocabulary is going to be limited, and as such you won't be able to hold a proper conversation with them.
      I'd imaging once you have learned a few more techniques, people will want to roll with you, as until that point they would be having to guide you during the roll so it's more like a class than a roll. Some schools don't let their students roll until they have learned the full combatives curriculum, as before that they tend to clinch up and can end up hurting themselves or the other person they are rolling with.

      @@karmanyngje4907 thanks for your response. It makes perfect sense. There were two guys who rolled with me yesterday and walked me through it. One was teaching step by step, the other then actually wrestled/rolled with me..he let me work. It was awesome. That's what I want. It does seem that its just something that will come with time and make more and more sense the more I practice.

    Y'all should read the book "breathe" rickson Gracie talks about this exact style of rolling throughout the whole book. Great read to give you an idea how your tactics should be when rolling

    4 lessons in, getting smashed by people doing their first day. Took me 4 lessons to realise im overthinking everything to the point where I'm frozen because I don't want to get caught with something even though I have no idea what I can be caught with. In class tonight I'm going in with the mindset of trying things and reacting to the situation rather than trying not to put myself in a bad position, then figuring out what I can and can't do next time.

    Ive been having this click for me as of late. My coach says its not great to pull guard per say. But im 511 and am 160. so im not exactly a big guy. But ive noticed im finding arms and sweeps alot easier to get side or even mount at times. It has helped me tremendously in forming a game but im still a 1 stripe white belt so i dont finish as many arm or shoulder locks as id like but i am realizing im finding them a whole lot more playing guard. On top of that my guard is becoming harder to pass. I know this style isnt ideal for mma. but i believe it is still beneficial being able to play off your back. even with striking.

    I've only ever rolled defensively, but today during my schools open mat (in case you don't know, you show up, roll for a bit, then go home) I'll try doing aggressive rolling,

    It’s all about patience, you can’t always force a submission, let the submission come to you. You probably have to set up the submission in most cases but, if you let the person attack, they’ll make a mistake that you can capitalise on ( especially lower belts ). It works very well

    If I don't think about winning I get overpowered and submitted . Seeing that I'm 5,7 125 lbs but thinking ahead doesn't usually distract me , I know where I want to be , and any move I make is for a reason . I've found that it takes focus and I'm able to keep calm and create a game plan like " okay im here i missed the double under but if he lifts his leg again - GOT IT . For me I've found that staying focused on a particular strategy and exploding when the time is right has worked best for me . It's very crucial to stay calm when someone is on top of you because u can panic , but also don't settle . Think " I'm going to win " so u can have the motivation to get the heck out of there

    My light bulb moment was realizing that every joint is a weakness. Somewhere to push. To pivot. You can use it to break your partners balance, use it to rotate yourself, use it to get positions, submissions. Possibilities are endless!

    Hey Chewy. I was wondering if I could get your opinion on something. I've been training a lot more at my academy for the past year and recently received my blue belt. I train about 4 times a week for about 2 hours and I have a friend who I drill and spar with at my place as well. I have also recently begun competition. So overall, I am planning on joining a judo dojo near by once I have a 2 or 3 stripes on my blue belt. They train 2 times a week for 2 hours and I'd still like to go to jiu jitsu 4 times a week ;D I am wondering if cross training jiu jitsu and judo is a bad idea. Do you think it might be too much for me to take on right now and I should just focus on jiu jitsu? And if so, when do you think it would be a good time to start cross training another martial art in general? Thanks for the content also man. I love how insightful you are. Thanks for your hard work and your support. I'd really love to teach BJJ one day and you are a real inspiration for that my man. Peace

    Went to a new gym where the head coach was a lot younger than I am. The kids there learned a lot from me, how to ride, how to grapple to a stalemate, how to drain the other guy's cardio and then get the sub. Coach caught on and jokingly called me out for stalling. After practice I said "if i match these kids intensity I'd be done in 2 minutes. But I'll be fine as long as I remember the goal which is to make the other guy quit."

    So true. Can’t do striking for shit after a workday on my feet but I find I roll my best after a long day laboring, when I’m physically exhausted (albeit caffeinated) but more mentally technical.

    That's probably a good mindset but if you play defensive only it might just make the other person want to constantly attack and you feel like you're just surviving through the roll

    My Coach Saul, a Purple belt( i am white) he 5,6 and he roll against much bigger persons and that what he does he very defensive and calmed they tired themselves out and he looks at the clock when there a minute left he works hard mostly he sweeps and submits.

    I dislocated a rib. It’s been about a month now since it happened. It is not fully healed but it’s gotten much better. I swim a lot now and that’s been very helpful. I haven’t gone back to rolling. Do you have experience with this injury and if so how long did it take you to heal? Also, when did you get back on the mat? Thank you!

    I always did this since the start, and it made sense to me specially because my cardio wasn't that great. However I kept getting yelled at even though they weren't submitting me. I never understood why my coaches would tell me that bjj is first defense, then control, then attack. However Everytime I am in defense I would get yelled at to move lol. So frustrating

    Hey Chewie, I want to compete in grappling competitions. Ideally if I become great at grappling I want to go to ADCC, I am already doinbg bjj and just started wrestling now. I'm 21, and in my country we don't have wrestling in high school so that's why I have a late start. How should I train 7xbjj + 3x wrestling all classes are one hour, or 5xwrestling 2h and 4x bjj 1h? I want to compete, love both arts equally, so what's the better choice?

    Could you give me some advice? I'm a 2 stripe white belt and I like to read a lot about bjj, so I read once that the best thing you can do is to play defensivily and make sure your opponent can't tap you so I kind of focused on that at the beggining and I'm good at avoiding tapping, the thing is my training partners were improving faster than I was and they were more agressive so I tried to be the same and I feel like it's working, so I don't know what my intention should be from now on

    Defensive jiu jitsu is where it’s at. There’s a time and place for going hard and working hard for cardio but I would dread going to jiu jitsu if I did it every round every day. Develop your guard, wait for good opportunities to sweep or go for subs and your experience defensively will help you understand the offensive side of the game too. Also if you want to see defensive jitsu in a fight watch noguira vs bob sapp.

      @@Chewjitsu I've seen you make a video called "Tips for new white belts, so I wanted a "tips for new blue belts" and at last "tips for blue belts becoming purple belts". I've been a blue belt for 2 years, and I dont really feel I have improved a lot. I have some training parters who got their blue belt when I was a white belt, and I feel like I am cathing up to them and maybe even becoming better than them. Basically I am asking for some pointers on how to get to the next purple belt level, because I feel like most people get stuck on the "blue belt 2 stripes" for years!
      I am kind of rambling here, but I will give you an example.
      1 year ago a new white belt came to the gym, and I dominated him easily. 1 year later, I still get the better of him, but not like before. Even though we have trained the same amount of time. His progress have went sky high, but mine not do much. And I feel like this is the case for 90% of all the blue belts in my gym and blue belts everywere. Thanks you for your time!

    As a 125lbs 2 stripe white belt i have just noticed the same thing, i play defense and im starting to get stalemates against 180lbs 4 stripe white beltz at my gym. Also threatening them with subs now ,its the weirdest thing i just relax and think about sweeps and guard passes while everyone tries to crush me 'coz im the little guy, then bam i get good positions 'coz they expended too much grinding it out on me!

    I remember one day I was rolling with people in my unit. I hated this one guy with a passion. I wanted to knee his face in not roll with him. So everyone I had to roll with before I used minimum energy and just capitalized on their mistakes. I submitted most of them and ended a few with me in a dominant position. When I rolled against the guy I hated i went on the offensive. I had so much adrenaline and gave it everything I had. I just ended up wasting hella energy and gassed out lmao. I learned that day I’m x10 better calm and defensive.

    I’m the complete opposite, my game is really defensive playing on my back with open guard tiring someone else out until I can get to mount easily without having to put too much strength in cause i’m not the biggest guy, or big at all in all honesty, and I’ve been trying to step it up and stay on my knees and not to let someone just smash me and try to smash them but it’s not working. Are there any tips anyone can give me to change up my game because i think i can do much better if I can work on my attacking game too, thanks!

    I mean, realistically the light bulb moment is realising that every roll you do has a different goal/purpose. When I roll with higher belts, I want to learn. When I'm rolling with my own belt (white) or a blue belt, I'm trying to use what I've been drilling against resistance and maintaining good pressure. And I just alternate whether I'm looking to pull guard and sweep, or get on top and work on passing guard.

    Pretty good vid. I get smashed all the time. 3 stripe wb (wah), but most dudes my size or bigger (169lbs) smash me, so I've had about 2 years to practice defense ;). Need to hit the weights more.
