My buddy has the HPG and I have the Swagman. I'm pretty happy with the Swagman roll. My main purposes for it are to wear around camp and to keep in my day-bag/PSK. It's great for that! I only use it as a bag in emergencies, most of the time I use the great-coat function.

In fairness to the Helicon-Tex Swagman Roll, the reason for its narrowness is that rather than being designed as an outer bag, it is meant as an inner bag to a larger (and winter weight) sleeping bag. Give it a larger width and it would not slip inside.
Thank you for your gd advice! That would definitely be the best option with that bag but I have found that unless your sleeping with boots in the bag that a rectangular foot box with no baffle leaves my feet always feeling chilly.
@@havensoutdoorworld3656 You can use the drawstrings on the Swagman Roll to tighten it in the feet. Makes a difference for one's chilly feet (I've tested it a week ago).
I liked the way you presented both. You even said if “you” had to choose which one you would go with. While I like the width of the HPG I find more utility with the Helikon. Great video.
Good review. I found these a number of years ago. I prefer the Swagman for its versatility. Those tabs are actually for hanging under a hammock as an underquilt. I'm a small guy and generally use it as just a summer bag in sleeping bag mode. On backpacking trip the ability to wear it as an additional jacket is great and a feature I didn't think I'd use but I've probably used more then any other.

I’ve been informed that the Hpg is not compatible with usgi poncho as a liner however the helicon fits well. So if that’s your intended purpose go for the swagman!
Helikon do a very good reproduction usgi poncho. I've never owned a real usgi one, but it's way lighter than my '90s era issue HM forces green poncho. So good in fact I've now bought a second one for the missus to go with the swagman she's getting for Xmas.
If I recall correctly, I think the tabs are designed to connect to a military rain poncho, just like the classic liner. Very helpful review; I was intrigued when I first saw the Swagman but I don’t think this type of item compliments my kit very well.

The HPG liner is interesting. Made in the USA is always a plus. I have the Swagman Roll. Besides lining my rain poncho, I keep it as part of my minimalist sleep system and put it in a waterproof bivvy bag and it goes with my emergency kit. I’m kind of a broad guy through the chest and shoulders and it’s on the narrow side for sure. What I do is zip one arm outside. I feel trapped with both arms zipped into bags anyway. I’ve made a separate sleeve warmer that I slip my free arm into and I’m good to go.

I hope HPG watches this video. If the could add some of the features of the swagman like a full zipper and the fastex buckle they would unstoppable. One thing you did not mention is that the swagman is waterproof. This would also be a great feature.
I agree! They are a worthy addition especially on a family trip when you never know who will get chilly when:) hopefully they will continue to evolve and put out a gen 2 version! I do not think either is waterproof however just resistant but will test and post results soon. If I remember correctly my shoulders soaked through at about 30 mins. During steady rain. Maybe my dwr coating has began to wear ?
It's not waterproof, but the Apex insulation keeps its warmth went wet, so maybe that's what he meant? I just bought a Swagman. The box and site both say it's water resistant, due to a DWR coating. My issue is I'm only 5'7", 150 lbs... The "one size fits all" doesn't really work for me, which is a bummer... I mean, it goes over me, but the cinch buckles to make it a poncho/overcoat can't cinch down enough to keep in place very well. I'm not sure I want to keep it.
Thank you for that information and your opinion! It is correct the synthetic insulation is much warmer than down when it gets wet. I have seen what you are describing as well with the looser fit on smaller individuals. The benefit of your size is it will definitely fit a 40-50 degree bag or quilt inside and take your comfort rating below freezing to make a more versatile system. I find it most practical to wear when static around camp or in tree stand or glassing etc. definitely to much dangling fabric for tight bushwhacking scenarios! They have their place as an addition to your regular gear but I wouldn’t tuse as a substitution!
I'm happy to support any western country but top of the list is my own country first New Zealand 🇳🇿 a lot of my extra tall gear like bag and quilt i had made in NZ. But I also love to support America 🇺🇸 because USA is the home of freedom and a strong America is a strong west, if you live in any western country supporting USA manufacturers is good. I try to avoid supporting any enemy countries but you know when the dollars get really tight you might need to spend a few Yen 💴 lol. You’re right buddy! For me it’s a personal choice to try to find local manufacturers to support since there are so few these days:( so basically if the specs are similar and there is a USA made option i usually will go that route. It’s surprising how often you have few choices! Shoes are a good example all the way to kitchen appliances. I do agree with you and I think arcteryx is a great example where the quality and attention is as good as it gets! I love my alpha parka and rho tops:)

It does seem like a responsible patriotic thing to do buddy. It does bother me that in order to be competitive in pricing we are often forced to cut jobs and outsource over seas. I do understand the reasons but I feel it is important for every country to have manufacturing jobs available. Peace to you and yours brother!
I Checked out the jerven bag and it seems solid to me! 1lb heavier but I bet it is more waterproof than the Tex and hpg? By the sound of the fabric combined with the inner Mylar type layer it may be 100% waterproof? The down side to that is of course breath ability. Without seeing it in person I would guess it’s superior as a shelter/bivy from elements especially in static situations but may not be as gd as active insulation layer/breathable? Looks strong and well made as well as thoroughly tested, primaloft is good insulation as well so I wouldn’t hesitate to give it a try if your in the market for such a piece:)
Correct! I did miss that one! I rarely use my hammock and have not used it that way but the corner tabs do make it ready to go! I have used my kifaru woobie that way so familiar with the technique. Thanks for chiming in!
I am viewing this video while draped in my Hil People Gear Serape. I have tested both HPG and Helicon-Tex and very much prefer the HPG unit. The Swagman has a great design, a total rip-off of HPG, but the quality is, well, Chinese. Take a great design, make it out of cheap fabric, thin insulation, and problematic zippers, and you have the Swagman. The HPG Serape is light but pretty bulky. It reminds me of a thick woobie. The fabric is rip-stop. It is by no means waterproof, so add a poncho to your gear, and a ground pad if you intend to sleep in it. It's a summer weight sleeping bag, but add a blanket and you can sleep well.

I like the full zip on the Helikon more than the extra width on the HP for drafts in mid temperature use. Also, I think the Helikon supports the attachment of a military spec poncho. Your welcome! I think you will be happy with the Tex! It is a versatile good quality garment and will serve your purposes and size very well. The hpg serape does not have tabs or grommets at corners for directly attaching to poncho.
when reviewing products where the product is made is not the end of the story. Quality, features, size and weight and how it gets its specific job done is what makes a product great for the consumer. Not where it was made or designed. :face palm:
I do agree, and would not let the origin of a product be the only reason for purchase:) however if all else is equal quality I personally will choose USA manufacturing first. Both these garments are excellent quality and I tried to inform potential buyers of that fact.
Not necessarily. Some manufacturers like the quality control so really depends on what your looking at but I do agree that it is less of a factor if it’s not made in your home country:)
It seems steep and is high for a synthetic blanket,but cheap compared to the price of a good jacket and quality sleeping bag. I had a hard time finding a genuine issue woobie a few years ago new or used! Must be in short supply these days!?
They do seem to be! I have had the helikon windshirt and the hpg og kitbag and both have proven to be durable and well designed. Love some issues gear too! Ecws level 7 made by wild things is amazing gear!

I'm searching for the military issue Gen3 ECWCS level 6 gore tex for myself and my wife. It all is daily wear but really it's part of our bug out clothing.

For me it’s always a task to find correct lengths:( I was able to score a pair of level 6 gore bottoms a few years ago and they are definitely solid and have served me well. Unfortunately they are desert digital pattern but the price and long size were right!

Made is USA or not is a non-issue if you're not American

For me it’s always a task to find correct lengths:( I was able to score a pair of level 6 gore bottoms a few years ago and they are definitely solid and have served me well. Unfortunately they are desert digital pattern but the price and long size were right!

It’s the way god made me brother:) I will try to find a cheap microphone option to enhance the sound. We never wanted to be tv stars just trying to help in people’s research. Picture is worth a thousand words they say:) do you have any simple mic options you like?

@@havensoutdoorworld3656 Will not burden you with my problems. Yes,.........to find peace in the woods. That is the best thing. It is all I have left now. 63 years and everything has changed. It is hard to trust and listen to the younger crowd. So many are full of methane. Most friends are older because of same beliefs and upbringing. Hard to find younger people with same outlook on life and living.

I hear you buddy and I can relate! My oldest son is 15 now and I find myself thinking the same thing! What I tell myself is that passion and knowledge don’t necessarily come from age even though many must! Thanks for the apology too buddy that means a lot. I don’t looks like my neighbors or peers and get cold shoulders many times in my community until I initiate kindness and respect:)
