My brother had a dog kennel (chain link, 6X6X10 with a door) left behind from renters that he gave me. I put a roof on it, added small chicken wire to the bottom 2 feet to prevent babies from escaping and set it all on a cement floor for easy cleanout, I put in 1 buck and 1 doe. They have produced babies like clockwork ever since. I remove the buck at times so she can have a break. I have lost very few babies and have enough meat to share with my aging parents. I added plenty of boxes for the buck, doe, and babies to hide in. Also lots of straw that they hide in and poo on that goes straight to the garden.
LOL the first thing I thought when it started to play was, yeah he's gonna love that when the new wears off and they begin to tunnel out. I'm in the process of building a big outside pen like that so mine aren't always in pens, but I picked up a bunch of junk chain link fence for free off Craigslist and am laying it down on the ground, and hooking the sides of the pens to it. We'll shovel dirt on top of that and sod it, then they can't dig out.
After the novelty wore off of the new enclosure they started to chew and burrow out. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. But I got their air conditioned enclosure built so they're happy now!
do you have a new post with the new bunny barn. Would love to see it. Just built a pen for my rabbits too. Love the idea of them living more naturally. They certainly look happy.
I am a new SE TX breeder, Hollow Kingdom Rabbitry and Reds. I wish we could get our rabbits off the wire for some playtime once in awhile, but we are afraid of them getting parasites. Also, they need to keep clean for shows, and I've heard baths aren't good for them. I will ask the Premier One company which electric fence net they make that could work for rabbits. We could set it up only on nice days for the rabbits to play, and think of some portable "hobbit holes" to make.
The visual is great but the black type is impossible to read. I wish you had just told us what you've done and how you did it. It looks great! What did you do to stop them from tunneling out?
My chickens and rabbits tend to get along fine. I have a small door opening the coop into the chicken run but I never close it. The chix go in to roost and come out when they're ready. They practically take care of themselves. The bunnies on the other hand need to be closely monitored in this TX heat.
i hear people saying you dont want to raise rabbits too close to chickens because they share a lot of the same disease. i havent had that issue(my birds free range and like to hang around the bunny hutches(they scratch around under them to eat the bugs living in the poo) still, something to keep in mind. Some people put wire on the ground to prevent digging. worked for me at one time when i had a colony set up.
The cool things about rabbits is that they CAN inbreed without feer of a fifth leg growing out of thier forehead. If you're concerned about show quality then there is a small diference. In Californians, if a bro. and sis. mate then they can have a slight silvery tinge to their fur and that's not show quality. Other than that it's no biggie. We breed them for meat so we don't worry about it.
How do you deal with the mannure, or I should ask better, how do the rabbits deal with the mannure all over the place ? Does it create any sort of problems for them or you ?
That's actually a great idea. We'll be doing the same here ourselves shortly so they can escape the heat come summer time. We're in the middle of a storm shelter build so for us it's one project at a time!
Great to see someone trying this. I did as well. I had issues with long term management of waste - it becomes a time requirement to remove excess amounts with that many rabbits in a defined space. As well, it works much better raising your own colony with only your rabbits. NEVER mix someone else's rabbits in yours. Can obtain devastating results for disease control and fighting between does. How do you manage these two issues?
Yeah it's just plastic netting. I have dirt piled on both sides of the net about 3-4 inches high now. They don't seem to interested in digging out. They burrow around the little yard but thats it. I don't water the colony's ground much. Only if we go too long with no water. I usually just go with the rain cycle.
This is such a great pen! I love to see the rabbits in a more natural setting. Do you leave all the rabbits in the pen over night? How do you deal with predators? I'm sure a wire top would help with hawks and such but what about raccoons and fishers digging under or through the fence? Also do you let your does kindle in the pen? Once again great video!!!!
Son bellos los amo ...yo tuve un tiempo pero tuve k regalarlos me hicieron muchos destroso y no tenia un lugar a propiados para ellos ...pero los recuerdo mucho
I have 3 Ca. bunnies....they are indoor bunnies but go out when its nice and not to hot outside....we have a room in our home just for them :) and they are litter trained....the first thing I thought of was how the heck are you going to keep them from tunneling out...but then i saw your answer.....having so many bunnies breeding together are you not having the males fight and kill each other? I liked your pen they seemed to like it also....do they still go outside?
Im thinking about getting 2-3 rabbits. i wanna set something up like this for them and maybe 2-3 chickens. i have a chicken coop with a automatic door that i want to attach to a fenced in range. I was wondering, do you think it would be possible to get them to kinda roost inside the coop at night. And then when the doors open they will be free to the small fenced in area? I was thinking about putting cages inside the coop with nest boxes or hidey holes inside them. Thanks, Daniel
If you want to you can se my pen/cage. It's still under construction but thanks for lots of ideas you gave me! :) I can't make mine too big since we have too many predators that will kill them (and I'm not rich enough to buy tons of net and materials) but I hope it will work for 3 does + kits when it's done :)
i tried this, and while its neat in the short term, it doesn't work in the long term. the rabbit will soon eat all of the grass and cover the entire floor with poop, which you will have to continuously add mulch to cover up, which will collect water like a sponge when it rains. Then because of the ground being continuously wet the rabbit will start to develop fungal and bacterial problems and start to die off.
reivenne that would be amazing if it would work, but it won't. My rabbits crap EVERYWHERE. Seriously, everywhere. Wherever their little fluffy butts take them there will surely be a trail of "pebbles".
They Dont diggout?? and are the sides made of plastic?? they dont chew through it?? do you water the grass inside so it keeps growing?? I love your coloney :) but my rabbits would excape in a heart beat no matter how many hideouts i put they always dig :/
I live in the "outer suburbs" if that makes any sense. (We call it our "suburban farm".) We do have coyotes that'll come up to people front doors from time to time but we don't sorry about predators. Cats are my biggest worry but the dogs aleviate those.
How do you prevent fights between them? As far as I know rabbit is a territorial animal and tends to fight with other rabbits when it feels that its territory is threatened. Really need your answer. Thanks in advance......
how do you control the population? do you fence out males? im planning to do free range in my small yard but im afraid I'll bite off more than I can chew
u wonder if you could do a tick toc pen to go along with this let them eat the grass for maybe 2 or 3 days then at night let them run around in there little pen then move them along? in the main pen? would they go back to there "home pen" on there own question questions
It's part of our daughters' responsibilities to keep the manure situation in control. It's simply raked up and put in the compost pile. As for problems? Not for me! (Ask the Twilight loving teens in my house if it's a problem for them to clean rabbit poop!) =)
How do you keep your rabbits from digging out. Also, are these rabbits bred for meat? If so, do they appear to have "tougher meat" than ones kept in a smaller enclosure? From most of the resources I have either read or watched on youtube this is a "problem" because of all the exercise the meat gets tougher.
***** I did this for a while. I had 30 in my back yard, fenced in like the video. We have had goats and chickens for years without problems. While I was out one night the neighbor's dog got in my yard somehow then broke into the open air pen. I have two rabbits now. He killed the rest. It was horrible. We keep them in cages now.
oh no, what I was asking was if you have noticed a difference between when rabbits are kept in hutches to rabbits that have the opportunity to free range. In my opinion, if rabbits have a good quality of life, less stress and a more natural environment, their meat should reflect that quality, but I have never raised rabbits for meat before, so I was hoping for an experienced meat rabbit breeder's advice on this. Also, how is the outside run constructed. Is it equipped with a foundation of some sort to prevent digging out? What do you use as far as fencing to deter predators. From what I am told, the more they run around the tougher their meat is. Rabbits don't have any fat. To raise meat rabbits you have to treat them like Veal. Not a lot of space to move and good food.
I want to do this but I'm afraid where I live opossums, raccons and probably the worse ones cats flood the neighbor is there anything I can do to maybe bypass that?
Thanks for the tip. We've since built a climate controlled "bunny barn" with an extended "play yard" and doggy door. So they can come and go as they please. =)
hey what do you do about them digging under the fence?? i have a coop with run for egg/meat chickens and am thinking of having this next to it so i could have some meat rabbits
I have a pet rabbit of the same breed we bring him a fresh head of lettuce everyday he has his own shed and gets a ton of attention pet rabbits life is probably better than being killed at 3

NO ESCAPES!! I should rename it Alcatraz! =)
Similar to mine. Did you wire the ground to prevent digging? I laid down hardware cloth and planted grasses that grew through the wire. You can't see the cloth anymore.

I love how natural the materials look. They must feel so at home.
Those are the happiest rabbits I have ever seen. lol. . Thanks for the video. I thought I was insane , for wanting happier rabbits. lol.

Yup, yup...very true. My chix (RI Reds and Golden Stars) chase the smaller rabbits. (But they don't hurt them.) It's pretty entertaining actually!
Have you considered installing a "No dig Apron" so they are less prone to digging under your fence?
ျမန္ကာ
i tried this, and while its neat in the short term, it doesn't work in the long term. the rabbit will soon eat all of the grass and cover the entire floor with poop, which you will have to continuously add mulch to cover up, which will collect water like a sponge when it rains. It's perfectly doable, just throw some straw down and they'll poop/pee on it, then sweep it up. Easy enough and it makes amazing fertiliser.
reivenne that would be amazing if it would work, but it won't. My rabbits crap EVERYWHERE. Seriously, everywhere. Wherever their little fluffy butts take them there will surely be a trail of "pebbles".
Nice setup up I have a rabbit colony myself have couple vids posted
Great video. How do they do in the heat? I'm thinking of raising NZ/Cali crosses in central Texas.
They Dont diggout??
and are the sides made of plastic?? they dont chew through it??
do you water the grass inside so it keeps growing??
I love your coloney :) but my rabbits would excape in a heart beat no matter how many hideouts i put they always dig :/
Have any problems with predators like owls or hawks? And how much money was put into the fencing? Great video!
How is the cleanup in this setting? Simply rake up?

i plan on moving to texas. i wanted to have a bunch of rabbits among other animals but wasn't sure what kind of predators you have around there.
How do you prevent fights between them? As far as I know rabbit is a territorial animal and tends to fight with other rabbits when it feels that its territory is threatened. Really need your answer. Thanks in advance......
Will they give birth to their kits in the buckets as well? Or do you have to put in nesting boxes?
lol hobbit holes! now if i ever get a rabbit, I'll name name him bilbo! X3
Love it. Cant wait to use some of your ideas! Thanks.
how do you control the population? do you fence out males? im planning to do free range in my small yard but im afraid I'll bite off more than I can chew
If you could tell me which part of Texas I'd be happy to give you some more info.
I know the video is old but do you still feed them hay and pellets or they just forage? how big was your set-up? how is the colony now? Thank you!
u wonder if you could do a tick toc pen to go along with this let them eat the grass for maybe 2 or 3 days then at night let them run around in there little pen then move them along? in the main pen? would they go back to there "home pen" on there own question questions

Joshua2019 +1 for caged rabbits, they are for the meat
This is exactly what i want to do. Do you have a problem with them becoming 'wild'?
ever had any problems with hawks or predators of the sky?
I love cali rabbits they so cute
What are some benefits of raising rabbits colony style? Thinking about it

Bunny heaven. Even if they're killed later, it sure beats the life of an average pet rabbit.
I have a pet rabbit of the same breed we bring him a fresh head of lettuce everyday he has his own shed and gets a ton of attention pet rabbits life is probably better than being killed at 3
Do you keeps your bucks in there too
none of them get snatched up by birds of prey?
Do you mix the males in with the females
How do you keep animals from getting in? I want to do something like this but worried about hawks, raccoons, etc
Can they dig out and escape? I have one of these and want to make this in my yard but not if she escapes!
I have a california bunn, she is like a third child to me but she's a inside bunny.

I'll give you a 5%, much better than everyone else but at the same time, your still killing them.

How do you prevent them from digging a tunnel?
+gyshalom believe it or not ive put a garden dwarf and a big stone in my rabbits tunnels when started digging under the fence :P now thy dig inside :) let them dig they enjoy it and its part of their instincts.
We sell ours on Craigslist. $20 for juniors and $25 for adults. (Unless we get a real pretty batch and they're $5 more)
are you concerned about predators in texas? what area are you from?
Very nice very very nice.
Does the male live with them the whole time?
do ur rabbits ever fight with each other or do the males ever kill the babies???
2140lacy
Actually, that tends to be only in the wild that they do that, from what I understand. I have heard of many people having their males in colonies with their females without losing any kits.
I'd love to do this but they poo everywhere and so we have to then move them weekly!
We don't. And...you can't. We actually selectively bred the females then removed the males. The all kindled (gave birth) then a month later there were more...then MORE!!! WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN A STRONG RAIN COMES???AND THE WATER WILL ENTER THE HOLES ... THEY WILL BE VERY COLD AND WET... WHAT DO U THINK THE SOLUTION?
I suppose we will all SCREAM AT THE TOP OF OUR LUNGS LIKE YOU.
here in texas are you also i might be interested in buying some
Where did u get the netting??
In a colony. Do you separate the male rabbit?
Not in a typical colony set up but you can do a “controlled colony” where you selective breed.
Very good. I am from Uzbekistan but in my counrty we have not Californian.
Do you know where I can rent two dozen white rabbits for a day?
UPDATE to this video: We've since done away

How do you go about catching them when your ready for processing?
Similar to mine. Did you wire the ground to prevent digging? I laid down hardware cloth and planted grasses that grew through the wire. You can't see the cloth anymore.
how do you start one without them fighting??
