I had literally finished watching all the videos in this channel. This was my final video. I'm not even a lawyer, none of these are applicable at all to me and what I do. But this channel is so informative, I love it. Seems like everyone can relate at some level.
Laser printers are no joke. I studied music in college and I got a laser printer for like $70 to print long pieces of music and blank sheet music paper. Have never needed to color print anything in the 2 years I've owned it. Just use a free app on my phone to scan things and I've bought replacement toner for my printer once.

I 100 percent agree with the laser printer recommendation. As a graduate student, having an inkjet printer is a nightmare. I have wasted so much money having to buy cartridges every month. Inkjet cartridges only print around 300 pages, but a regular sized toner can print around 1200 pages.
My computer died with my thesis inside when I was in the university, and had to rewrite it again! My worst year ever! And all that books! I wish I have a tablet while I was in the university. I even visited the libraries of many universities to gather information, everything was lost. I had to do everything again. And I’m not talking 20 years ago, I’m talking 6 yrs ago. Oh holy icloud, Dropbox and Evernote
You know you could have bought a hdd drive-to-usb cable and imaged the drive with free and/or open-source software on someone else's computer and created a VHD and then play it on a virtual box and thus retrieved your thesis, right?
Girl I am crying for you. That is a story straight from my nightmares. In college, I had the same thing happen to me, but I periodically backed up to a thumb drive, so only a page or so was lost. Now in law school, I use Microsoft OneDrive (cloud). But know that I sympathize with your pain and I hope you have good karma in the future to make up for your suffering. And you deserve it cause stuff like that never happens to the people who half-ass their work. It only happens to people like you, who worked really hard on the paper.
Evernote is amazing. Even if you already use iCloud or Google cloud. Also using evernote is worth it. Can record audio. Search notes. Hundreds of features. Easy to sync. Can duplicate a note and send it to others. Just imagine google/apple cloud software, but made just for every multimedia way to make a note. Can add slideshow files from class as well. Just worth trying out. From middle school to grad/trade schools. Only thing I recommend. Is to use Evernote and keep it synced up. I would use my phone to record lectures. And take short hand notes and mark down important time stamps. Then when I get to studying...I'd listen to those parts and take proper notes. Using relevant info from the text book. Making sure to take photos of the textbooks relevant parts, making them into their own notes. And I'd add all of this info into notes and put them in the correct "Evernote notebook" a dif notebook for each lesson category. You can search through notes and it is just amazing. Able to add rough info using phone or tablet. Then able to edit the notes and add "KEYWORDS AND TAGS" to the notes and notebooks. It is just amazing. And I've only needed the free version. I'm assuming a law student may need the premium version... but it is completely worth. Save your papers and outlines on it. Ofc also save on your comp, flash drive, and a "private cloud" as well. Really check it out and use it for every course. It will take practice to remember to use
A note on the laptop bit. Computers aren't just a "one and done" deal. Most computers, even laptops have the potential to be upgraded, and the hard drive is typically the easiest to replace, therefore I'd suggest that if you can't afford a really good laptop, then get a cheaper one that is able to be modded (you can find that information with a bit of research) and replace the hard drive with an SSD, you can find the size of an SSD that fits you best. If you can't or don't want to replace the hard drive then talk to a friend who does know how to use computers or take it to a computer repair shop and see if they'd be willing to perform the service for you. If you don't have the money to pay someone to do that for you then most community colleges will offer free labor to IT students to be able to perform that service for you, for free. Source: Am an IT student, and I see scenarios like this all the time.
Yep, and buy a passport drive (external portable SSD drive) and save everything on it as well as using Google drive/Dropbox. Yeah, also in IT here because what else do you do with a history degree? Anyway, you can also add external hard drive that aren't meant to be moved a lot, but add tons of cheap storage. About 5 years ago most external hard drives started at a Terabyte or two, they are probably bigger now. (Western Digital and most computer manufacturers like HP make external hard drives. "Passport" is a brand name for portable hard drives. The difference is a passport is solid state and the case is designed for travel. External drive is designed to sit on your desk.) The best way to protect your data is backup. BACK UP! In more than one place!
Are portable external hard drives that are advertised as shockproof and waterproof and all, still easy to break or something because of travel compared to SSDs?
Alex - If the portable drive you're considering is a SSD drive then that means it's a solid state drive. These are less likely to fail and lose your data because they don't have a spinning disc with an arm to write data like a standard hard drive. The spinning disc drive can fail/lose data because they are like a record player and they actually have bad sectors all the time, they just don't write to the bad sectors. The SSD works differently so it's less likely to fail. They are basically like Really Big flash drives or jump or thumb drives. But they can *still* fail. You always want to eject the drive using the computer's eject program, because if you pull it out while it's still writing data that data can be lost or corrupted. So even a shock/drop/waterproof SSD drive still might fail, which is why you want multiple backups - two or more drives, cloud storage, etc. (You can even get into things like RAID which provide automatic backup.)
Both external hard drives and portable SSD drives tend to be inexpensive and offer a lot of storage. When I say a lot we are talking a Terabyte or two for $100.00 - and that was 5 years or more ago (the last time I bought one). Both also last a long time AND as long as you move files or copy files instead of using "Windows Backup" you can move the files from computer to computer,just like any flash drive.

So true. I didn't have the benefit of a tablet when I took economics decades ago. My cousin just finished his honors in economics and I was amazed how the tablet integrated with the class room. How much time I wasted in the bowels of a library looking for obscure articles or setting up times with the teaching assistants. Or if I was saddled with a boring prof and I found my notes at the end of the day were just doodles. Now you can just you tube several sources to explain fractional reserves or the Laffer curve until you get the one that makes it all click for you.
there are inject printers that have black/ 3 color ink tanks much cheaper for quality color prints if you need,but a fast monochrome laser printer is still needed,also make sure your printer/scanner has document feeder with dual side swapper. you can find old refubrished lexmark/other brand printers/scanners cheap.

I actually started college with a Smith Corona Personal Word Processor, not a computer. (It was basically an electric typewriter with a 4 inch screen and a disc drive.)
Could not agree more with the point about the second monitor. Not sure how I feel about ditching case books altogether though (unless I'm misinterpreting that). Unless you're a printer masochist having a sturdy book to hold and highlight and toss across the room (only half kidding) is superior to looking at a screen for hours on end every day. Plus you won't have to buy a new tablet every month ;). The editing and presentation on this channel are fantastic. Came here from /r/lawschool. 9/10
That's fair about the case books. I hated dragging my case books (often three at a time) to class. And I prefer highlighting my cases on the Westlaw app instead of on paper. Plus having access to the Westlaw headnotes can sometimes replace reading the whole case and can almost always replace the function of a commercial outline. If I went through law school again, I would ask the prof or my friends for the case citations, and look up the cases online instead of buying casebooks. But I recognize that's not for everyone. BTW, Apple's iPad sales have slumped because people hardly ever replace them (certainly not every month!). Thanks for the kind words. We have a lot more videos coming out. Does WestLaw export to PDF (i.e. iBooks) to save your highlights locally? What if I want to read cases while I'm commuting home on the train and don't have wi-fi?
Listening to Devin talking bout losing data is causing flashbacks to my dissertation, in the days before cloud storage. I had all my drafts saved in 4 different physical locations…
There is no free lunch - be careful with SSDs. They are certainly more survivable than common rotating platter hard drives in the near term. They are however more susceptible to heat and they only fail catastrophically, which they eventually will. Hard drives will indeed fail sooner if you bounce them around, but they often are recoverable, degrade gracefully and are affected less by heat. Just always back up everything.
SSDs are not substantially more vulnerable to the temperatures you're likely to see in a laptop (they are less resistant to high temperatures than a mechanical hard drive, but the difference will only be noticeable at temperatures above about 200c, which you won't see in a laptop unless you set it on fire). SSDs can suffer data loss if left powered off at temperatures above 30c (for a period of several months or more), but this won't happen if you use your computer for at least a few hours each week. Also, SSDs don't usually fail catastrophically unless you ignore the early signs of failure. SSDs tend to exhibit sector degredation (the memory in them is divided into thousands of sectors, and they fail one at a time as they are used repeatedly). When this happens, the total available space on your drive will start to go down. This indicates that it's time to buy a new drive and transfer your stuff over. Data can also be recovered from a failed SSD. It's a more complicated process than with a mechanical drive, but there are professional services that will do it for you. The main advantage of mechanical drives is that they're usually substantially cheaper for the same amount of space.
This list is just why I hand-wrote everything in law school, including exams. Great way to get a whole room to yourself for a keyboard-clicky-clack free exam experience

I love this video, I was searching for something like that because I got so annoyed for searching a big fashioable schoolbag through the internet and I while doing that I dreamed of not have to carry so much if I can just record my teacher teaching so I could revise and thanks to this video I feel confident that I am not the only one who feels bad for not being allowed to brig in a laptop/phone to school.
Interesting points. I got accepted into the top law school in my country because they offered me a place because of my grades, now I’m just binge-watching Law advice videos. I don’t think I’ll get a tablet but I’m buying a new MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar and everything and I’ll bring my printer along too. Although I don’t think chucking away the casebook is the best idea.
Also have a spare toner cartridge or 2. If you run out in the middle of the night and have something due in the morning, you'll thank yourself for thinking ahead. Toner always dries up at the worst time.
Laughing my butt off...the "I lost everything before printing" -- yeah I did that -- in December 1989. So I guess I was ahead of my time in the wayback. I has to redo my notes (company law) because it was open book. Best mark I got...
I would also recommend getting HP connect. For 5.99 a month they monitor your printer ink levels and send your ink cartridges when you have about 50 pages left, so you are never out of ink.

I'm an IT guy & not a lawyer, excellent advice in regards to the laptop. Cloud storage & an SSD. SSD is even more important than say CPU or RAM (but you want at least 8GB or RAM & at least an Intel I5 equivalent) If the college gives out Microsoft accounts, you got 1TB of OneDrive. Google? You're probably getting a TB of Google Drive with your school account. Same with the printer advice, no Inkjet. Get a Cannon or Brother, avoid HP & avoid the shitty consumer grade ones that make a massive profit off of ink (they're usually cheap)
Thank you! All my worries about law school are gone now. Just so you know, I'm thirteen and I am a straight A student living in Ireland. And now, after knowing that technology is evolving rapidly, law school won't be as bad as my grandfather had told me. Now, I'm trying my best to get as much information as I can to know about law in Ireland and be prepared as I know, here in Ireland, law school students are more stressed than medical students. That's insane. But, many of them persue law for degree and they made their decision a year before entering law school. Another thing I would like to mention is, I've seen many videos where they say that law school is not worth it. I would like to know your thoughts bout that statement. Thank you.
Dang, son. You have a lot of your life left to live before law school. Unfortunately, it's impossible to make a blanket statement of whether law school is worth it or not. I loved it and would do it again. But I can't speak for everyone.
Im not in law school yet but having a scanner saved my life. I wish it was a lazer printer tho for the water sooubility. I essentially just use the scanner and still have to pay at the library for prints and copies.

Not exactly. Every computer still needs a hard drive. I recommend that you use cloud storage, but you should still get a laptop with a SSD to avoid it breaking in general.
SSDs are really inexpensive nowadays. I'm not an IT professional, but I am studying computer science, and give a lot of computer recommendations to my friends and family. I always recommend getting an SSD for any budget due to the superior speed and reliability. It doesn't have to be a huge SSD, just big enough to store things you need to get to immidiatly. Use cloud storage for archiving documents.
@@soundninja99 The thing also is that standard laptop HDDs supplied with the computer are notoriously cheap and poor quality. Every laptop in my family has had their's die slowly and painfully and been replaced by an SSD. The boot and access speed in general use is worth the money any day of the week.
1. Almost all of my law professors prohibit computers and tablets in class. Not to mention that used casebooks are cheaper than e-books, especially when you rent your books. As he explains later in the video, laptops are required for exams, so you can't just buy a tablet in lieu of a laptop. 2. Every single law student has a laptop, even if it's the one that they used in undergrad. So his point just boils down to having a backup of all your data, preferably in the cloud, which is good advice for anyone, not just law students. 3. If your school provides printing allowance, then do not buy a printer. Just print at school.
Somewhat random questions, Do Bar exams get easier the more bar's you get admitted to? Do you have an opinion on the doctrine of first sale in regards to the maintenance or modification of a farm tractor, iPhone, etc....
That's expensive, plus, nobody needs 1TB of storage for school, I'm in university and I have a 20gb free plan with dropbox and it is PLENTY! Most of your data is pdf, word, excel, some images, audio files for when you record your class, but most of it is very small. There's no need to pay 100$ per year for 1Tb of cloud storage
Many colleges give free access to cloud storage. Mine gives free access to 1TB of storage on onedrive. If your school doesn't pay for your cloud storage, just start with the free 15gb google drive plan and upgrade when you fill it up (which you probably won't)
TTate That's awesome, in my opinion 15 gigs is not enought, and ofcorse 1 TB is alot but it's great to backup everything for phone to laptop. I think there is a plan for 100 gig aswell
fuxiz 15 gigs aren't enough for everyone, I recognize that. That's why I recomended that you start of with the free plan, then upgrade when it's needed. That way you don't pay for more storage before you even fill up the cheaper (or free) option.
Join Office365 family plan and get their 1T Onedrive for a lot less. Advantages: have a whole suite of MS office and 1T Onedrive; share cost with your family/friends.
So if the case books are basically almost verbatim transcripts couldn't you just get the transcripts from public domain and put them on a PDF on an e-reader these days?

2:19 what purpose would it serve to have additional screens for a laptop while you can possibly work only on the main laptop itself at a time for a assignment?
I don't know if I fully understand your question but I'm gonna try to answer anyway. You can put resources on the other screen so you don't have to switch the app all the time for reference and you can easily manipulate them. Much easier than with your finger.

On the laptop aspect I know there are battery packs for phones (small boxes that can recharge your phone if the need be, like an extra battery or 2), so i googled to see if those existed for laptops as well, and it appears they do. Portable Laptop Charger is what they seem to be called.

The best thing I've learned from this channel (As someone with no intention of going to law school) is why lawyers bookshelves look so fancy.

I can not agree more with a laser printer. Once I upgraded in undergrad those damn 75+ pages a week took 1/4 the time and didn't need time to dry.

A friend got her BA in Theatre and then law degree. She is a top lawyer in her area. GOOD combo

Unless you're a printer masochist having a sturdy book to hold and highlight and toss across the room (only half kidding) is superior to looking at a screen for hours on end every day. Plus you won't have to buy a new tablet every month ;).

That's fair about the case books. I hated dragging my case books (often three at a time) to class. And I prefer highlighting my cases on the Westlaw app instead of on paper. Plus having access to the Westlaw headnotes can sometimes replace reading the whole case and can almost always replace the function of a commercial outline. If I went through law school again, I would ask the prof or my friends for the case citations, and look up the cases online instead of buying casebooks. But I recognize that's not for everyone. BTW, Apple's iPad sales have slumped because people hardly ever replace them (certainly not every month!).

There is no free lunch - be careful with SSDs. They are certainly more survivable than common rotating platter hard drives in the near term. They are however more susceptible to heat and they only fail catastrophically, which they eventually will. Hard drives will indeed fail sooner if you bounce them around, but they often are recoverable, degrade gracefully and are affected less by heat.
Just always back up everything.
SSDs are not substantially more vulnerable to the temperatures you're likely to see in a laptop (they are less resistant to high temperatures than a mechanical hard drive, but the difference will only be noticeable at temperatures above about 200c, which you won't see in a laptop unless you set it on fire). SSDs can suffer data loss if left powered off at temperatures above 30c (for a period of several months or more), but this won't happen if you use your computer for at least a few hours each week.
Also, SSDs don't usually fail catastrophically unless you ignore the early signs of failure. SSDs tend to exhibit sector degredation (the memory in them is divided into thousands of sectors, and they fail one at a time as they are used repeatedly). When this happens, the total available space on your drive will start to go down. This indicates that it's time to buy a new drive and transfer your stuff over.
Data can also be recovered from a failed SSD. It's a more complicated process than with a mechanical drive, but there are professional services that will do it for you. The main advantage of mechanical drives is that they're usually substantially cheaper for the same amount of space.
This list is just why I hand-wrote everything in law school, including exams. Great way to get a whole room to yourself for a keyboard-clicky-clack free exam experience

Interesting points. I got accepted into the top law school in my country because they offered me a place because of my grades, now I’m just binge-watching Law advice videos. I don’t think I’ll get a tablet but I’m buying a new MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar and everything and I’ll bring my printer along too. Although I don’t think chucking away the casebook is the best idea.

I am in love with law school. Yes these things are needed. I love my tablet and Samsung fold 5 phone.
Also have a spare toner cartridge or 2. If you run out in the middle of the night and have something due in the morning, you'll thank yourself for thinking ahead. Toner always dries up at the worst time.

I would also recommend getting HP connect. For 5.99 a month they monitor your printer ink levels and send your ink cartridges when you have about 50 pages left, so you are never out of ink.

I'm an IT guy & not a lawyer, excellent advice in regards to the laptop. Cloud storage & an SSD. SSD is even more important than say CPU or RAM (but you want at least 8GB or RAM & at least an Intel I5 equivalent) If the college gives out Microsoft accounts, you got 1TB of OneDrive. Google? You're probably getting a TB of Google Drive with your school account. Same with the printer advice, no Inkjet. Get a Cannon or Brother, avoid HP & avoid the shitty consumer grade ones that make a massive profit off of ink (they're usually cheap)

Thank you! All my worries about law school are gone now. Just so you know, I'm thirteen and I am a straight A student living in Ireland. And now, after knowing that technology is evolving rapidly, law school won't be as bad as my grandfather had told me. Now, I'm trying my best to get as much information as I can to know about law in Ireland and be prepared as I know, here in Ireland, law school students are more stressed than medical students. That's insane. But, many of them persue law for degree and they made their decision a year before entering law school. Another thing I would like to mention is, I've seen many videos where they say that law school is not worth it. I would like to know your thoughts bout that statement. Thank you.
Dang, son. You have a lot of your life left to live before law school. Unfortunately, it's impossible to make a blanket statement of whether law school is worth it or not. I loved it and would do it again. But I can't speak for everyone.
Im not in law school yet but having a scanner saved my life. I wish it was a lazer printer tho for the water sooubility. I essentially just use the scanner and still have to pay at the library for prints and copies.

SSDs may wear out faster than magnetic drives though perhaps that's not as much of an issue as it used to be.
In theory they do but I don't know anyone who ever had a problem, I think they are fine for most use cases. Also they are of course faster, so that is another benefit.

Not exactly. Every computer still needs a hard drive. I recommend that you use cloud storage, but you should still get a laptop with a SSD to avoid it breaking in general.
SSDs are really inexpensive nowadays. I'm not an IT professional, but I am studying computer science, and give a lot of computer recommendations to my friends and family. I always recommend getting an SSD for any budget due to the superior speed and reliability. It doesn't have to be a huge SSD, just big enough to store things you need to get to immidiatly. Use cloud storage for archiving documents.
@@soundninja99 The thing also is that standard laptop HDDs supplied with the computer are notoriously cheap and poor quality. Every laptop in my family has had their's die slowly and painfully and been replaced by an SSD. The boot and access speed in general use is worth the money any day of the week.
SSDs are dirt cheap. Pretty much all new laptops come with them. 1TB SSD cost about 120 USD. There is no reason not to buy one.

1. Almost all of my law professors prohibit computers and tablets in class. Not to mention that used casebooks are cheaper than e-books, especially when you rent your books. As he explains later in the video, laptops are required for exams, so you can't just buy a tablet in lieu of a laptop.
2. Every single law student has a laptop, even if it's the one that they used in undergrad. So his point just boils down to having a backup of all your data, preferably in the cloud, which is good advice for anyone, not just law students.
3. If your school provides printing allowance, then do not buy a printer. Just print at school.

Google drive offers a 1 TB storage for $100 a year!
That's expensive, plus, nobody needs 1TB of storage for school, I'm in university and I have a 20gb free plan with dropbox and it is PLENTY! Most of your data is pdf, word, excel, some images, audio files for when you record your class, but most of it is very small. There's no need to pay 100$ per year for 1Tb of cloud storage
Many colleges give free access to cloud storage. Mine gives free access to 1TB of storage on onedrive. If your school doesn't pay for your cloud storage, just start with the free 15gb google drive plan and upgrade when you fill it up (which you probably won't)
TTate That's awesome, in my opinion 15 gigs is not enought, and ofcorse 1 TB is alot but it's great to backup everything for phone to laptop. I think there is a plan for 100 gig aswell
fuxiz 15 gigs aren't enough for everyone, I recognize that. That's why I recomended that you start of with the free plan, then upgrade when it's needed. That way you don't pay for more storage before you even fill up the cheaper (or free) option.
Join Office365 family plan and get their 1T Onedrive for a lot less. Advantages: have a whole suite of MS office and 1T Onedrive; share cost with your family/friends.

I don't know if I fully understand your question but I'm gonna try to answer anyway. You can put resources on the other screen so you don't have to switch the app all the time for reference and you can easily manipulate them. Much easier than with your finger.

I know there are battery packs for phones (small boxes that can recharge your phone if the need be, like an extra battery or 2), so i googled to see if those existed for laptops as well, and it appears they do. Portable Laptop Charger is what they seem to be called.
