  • Punalu'u, aka, "Black Sand Beach" was the sleeper hit on The Big Island. Our quick little jaunt to this beach got us into the water expecting to see a turtle or two but to our amazement, we saw so many turtles that we lost count. We spent an entire afternoon floating with the turtles in the current, through the underground spring of freshwater that wells up in the bay. We captured them munching on red coralline algae formed from this water mixture. This is a really unique place to see the result of the volcanoes on the coast with the black sand and the effect of the turtles feeding on the algae from the spring.
