Distancing from religious beliefs and customs ? Strong religion would certainly counter another religion /ideology. It would function as a dam -stopping influx, the flow of other ideas /religions. But the absence of christianity by itself is not an issue. What fills the empty void IS important, can become a problem. But customs don't all disappear with religion. At the moment there are a lot of tension between Muslims communities so the fear and the hate coming from any government will remove these tensions. I went to Italy and Germany last week and I was shock by the number of immigrants standing on the streets as they were staring at me but they did not do anything. I felt so unsafe but every government let this situation left for so long. Will see what will happen ;)
