I have the versafine ink pad which now has a regular lid. However, I find it difficult to use without getting ink on my fingers. The Versafine Clair looks to have a better type lid that will be cleaner to use. I hope so anyway because I have just ordered one.
Yes! I totally understand. I prefer the VF Clair style pads too! There seems to be more space around the edges to grab, and the pad sits up high enough that the base doesn't get in the way. I also like how tightly they seal. I can come back to a VF Clair ink after a year or more and it's still as juicy as ever.
Onyx Black is the Versafine black. Nocturne is the Versafine CLAIR black. They are both equally good. They are slightly different, but both a good, solid black. Personally, I prefer Nocturne as I prefer the VF Clair ink pad cases. It keeps the pad nice and sealed, meaning I don't have to re-ink it as often! Except for Onyx Black, it seems that most stores carry the VF Clair line of inks. So, if having the same form factor/ matching set is important to you, I'd go for Nocturne. Thank you for the video it clears up the confusion. Also I have a question, my Versafine onyx black ink pad has some pilling on the pad, is there anything I can do to fix it or is it time to invest in a new one? Its bout 3 years old.
I'm glad the video helped! For your pilled ink pad, it sounds like it's time for a new one! I suppose you could try to remove the pilling gently with a razor blade to see if the pills can be removed and that the ink pad still stamps well afterwards. Otherwise, time for a new one. If you're just going to throw it away anyway, may as well experiment and see if you can get it to continue on for a while!
I like stamping on wood ,is it correct that Versafine bleeds on wood as I need to purchase a black stamping ink . Also would you possibly know how I could seal my ink stamping on wood so it is protected . Thank you 💐
Hi Sonia - yes Versafine can bleed on wood. I recommend using StazOn as it dries quickly and shouldn't bleed. You also wouldn't need to seal it as it will be permanent on a wood surface.
Glad you found it helpful! There are 24 colors in the Versafine Clair line. You can find them all at Imagine Crafts - the official US distributor for Tsukineko inks: www.imaginecrafts.com/versafine-clair
Glad to have a look at the ink comparison. No sure how I missed this, even though it seems familiar. Looking for a black replacement and I'm thinking about trying this brand.
I saw your question from Thursday's live stream, while I was going through the replay. I can't recommend these inks enough! I prefer Versafine Clair Nocturne because of the packaging. There's refill bottles available for both.
Thanks for sharing this comparison. I had been looking for a comparison review of these 2 for some time, but couldn’t find one. I just recently purchased the versafine Clair in nocturne, but haven’t had a chance to try it yet. Looking forward to more ink reviews. I’m particularly interested in A review of Catherine Pooler inks, but would enjoy watching an overview comparison of popular dye inks in general. 😀
Thanks Krystin! I'm not sure if the refomulation makes VFC dry faster - I think they both dry pretty quickly - especially for a pigment ink! Even though I have the "inside scoop" as an AIR with Imagine Crafts, Imagine is a distributor of Tsukinkeo inks, not the manufacturer, so we don't get all of the super secret details from Tsukineko. :(
Hi Andreea - the colors available in VersaFine and VFClair are really quite different. The closest to Vintage Sepia would probably be Acorn, but I think it is more brown than the Vintage Sepia (more orange). Hope that helps!
I have wondered what the difference is so this was great information. I just purchased a Versafine Onyx Black not too long ago and it doesn't have a hinged lid, though!
Thanks Belinda! I'm wondering where you purchased your Onyx Black from. As far as I know the VersaFine large pads only come in the hinged lid (might have different artwork). The VersaColor line just switched to a separate lid, so maybe Tsukinkeo is changing all of them....
Thank you so much for this video. The world of ink can be confusing. I have a complete collection of Colorbox pigment stamp pads and their reinkers from 1990. They are still wet and stamp wonderfully. But now I’m seeing new ink pads from Colorbox with and opaque lid. Can you explain how those two differ? They are labeled archival. So does that mean they are the same as Ranger’s collection of permanent dye inks? I really appreciate your guidance!
Hi Stacy. The Colorbox Archival inks were dye based inks, not pigment inks. Since they were labelled archival, they were probably like the Ranger permanent dye inks. Colorbox is no longer in business though, so you'd only be likely to get these inks used at this point as most retailers have depleted their inventory.
The thickness of the pads means a lot of the storage systems do not work. Are you aware of storage that holds the pads-I’m looking for the wall hanging type..thanks so much
I'm so glad you found something that will work for your storage solution! I wasn't aware of anything in particular as I keep all my ink pads in drawers. Drop me the link if you think to do it - I'd like to know so I can share with others.
I would think it would have been wiser 2 just add more colors 2 the versafine line rather than introducing it as something new. Love versafine, but hesitated 4 quite some time 2 buy b/c I thought it was different. Not a smart marketing move IMO.
The colors in the Clair line are completely different shades and are much brighter, so they are 20+ different colors. With the slight reformulation to allow for brighter colors, it makes sense to have a slightly different name. It's like New Coke and Classic Coke! Lol!
I thought you would mention if it was Copic marker friendly or not, water proof or not, used to emboss with or not for the newbies viewing this??!!? TFS, this mini review. ✨👍🏾
These two inks stamp differently on different surfaces particularly on wood. VersaFine clair tends to bleed on wood while VersaFine does not.
VersaFine Clair tends to wick when stamping on porous paper like 140# cold press watercolor paper. Versafine leaves a crisp sharp image.
I haven't experienced that issue... I'm glad that you found Versafine to work for your needs.

Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for doing this. I always wondered about the difference. 💕💕
Glad it was helpful!
Is Onyx Black the only black? I want to get it and wanna make sure I don't have other choices.

Thank you for doing this video. I have the Versa Fine Clair Nocturne and love how dark and crisp it is.
You're very welcome!

Why can't I find reinkers for these?
Very helpful Nicole - thank you! Remind me what container you use to store your Versafine Clair pads.🌼
Thanks! This is the bin I'm using right now... amzn.to/2yM0PaL
Thanks for answering this perplexing question. Do you know how many colors of Versa Fine Clair there are? Thanks.
Glad you found it helpful! There are 24 colors in the Versafine Clair line. You can find them all at Imagine Crafts - the official US distributor for Tsukineko inks: www.imaginecrafts.com/versafine-clair
Thank you for the info! I needed to know if I can use w watercolor. Or alcohol inks.
Glad to help!

Versafine is the best ink for sentiments..highly recommend
I appreciate your providing this information. Thx!

This is super helpful. Is part of the versafine Clair reformulation to make it dry faster?
Thanks Krystin! I'm not sure if the refomulation makes VFC dry faster - I think they both dry pretty quickly - especially for a pigment ink! Oh my gosh - thank you so much! So good to know.
Well done 👏
Brilliant information 👏
Thank you for sharing this! I’ve been wondering what the differences were.
Can you rub this ink on a palette and add water to it to water color an image?
Great question! VFC and VersaFine are oil based pigment inks. Though they clean up with water, they do not work as watercolor inks.
@@NicoleWattCreates Okay thank you so much for answering my question. I will still buy these inks! 😃
Great video! I was wondering what would be the closest match for Vintage Sepia from the Clair lineup ?
Hi Andreea - the colors available in VersaFine and VFClair are really quite different. The closest to Vintage Sepia would probably be Acorn, but I think it is more brown than the Vintage Sepia (more orange). Hope that helps!
Thanks for the clarification!
Thx so mych, was wondering about this for so long, 👍
Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you. What is the difference between VersaColor & VersaFine Clair?
Did not know VersaFine came in other colors outside black? 😂😄👍🏾 Thanks for this informative inky vid, Nicole?? 🤘🏾
Thx for comparing and showing it to us :)
My pleasure! Stay tuned as I have more videos like this one planned in the coming months!

@@NicoleWattCreates my lid looks like yours, but no hinge. I just ordered it from Stamplistic a few weeks ago.
Thank you so much for your video ♥️ now I'm a happier Crafter
Thanks Wendy! I'm working on some more ideas like this video that I hope to roll out in 2021, so, stay tuned!
