    As a light skinned black woman. I do get treated better than someone darker. People would guess my race, and never say "Black." They'll say Asian, Latina, Hawaiian, EVERYTHING but Black. People phrase me thinking I'm mixed. Colorism is real.

    TW: mention of police officers, ew
    There are police in my school now, it’s said it’s to “keep an eye on things” and “keep kids in line”. If you acknowledge what the police actually do and have historically done, I’m worried something will happen because of them instead of them protecting us.
    Edit: thanks for hoping me and the other students are OK :)

    Small vent:
    I'm tired. I don't wanna go into detail about whats going on. I'm just tired of existing in this individualistic, capitalist system and when I try to express how much its getting to me, nobody cares or listens, even if they're the one who asked. I just wanted to put this here where I know that I'll be heard and possibly echo similar sentiments of other viewers.

      Yeah, I can't even enjoy music without being barraged with ads. My commute isn't even long enough to get through the ad sequence, so I often can't start my day on a positive note with music on my way to campus

    • @samellison4452
      @samellison4452 Год назад +1

      @camicia nera What this person said isn't specific to the United States, though. It's about how capitalism breaks down the working class, which is a shared experience that should be approached with solidarity. Rather than making your fellow human more weary, I suggest redirecting that energy toward those who are actively harming us

    • @samellison4452
      @samellison4452 Год назад +1

      @camicia nera I don't deny that the United States is still actively imperialistic; however, the majority of that harm is perpetuated by government actors and capitalists (who combine to form the basis of the military-industrial complex), both of whom feel no shame exploiting others. Alternatively, many individual actors like missionaries, "voluntourists," and other white-savior types unintentionally engage in imperialism due to their ignorance. As this is a video about leftism, however, it's unlikely that individuals from either of these groups are commenting. Leftists are constantly trying to inform themselves on how to treat others equitably and resist mainstream narratives about the United States being a positive influence on the rest of the world. I do not intend to diminish your experiences. I'm attempting to point out that the people with whom you're upset likely aren't in the comment sections of this type of video

    A question (if a POC person andwers this, drop your venmo and I'll send you $10 for your labor /gen)
    I'm a white student at a mostly white institution, and I'm currently taking a class called Queer Trans Theory. Last semester, I took a class about masculinity and at the end of the semester, we had a discussion about what we could all do better in the class, and most of the POC in the room said that they wished their white classmates had brought up race more often instead of them always having to do it. Well, I've been trying to bring up race as often as I can in places where I feel like it fits (mostly about whiteness and white queer people's urge to be closer to whiteness) but I cant help feeling that it's not my place, and that I'm stepping on the POC in the class room's toes by bringing up race where they didn't. Does anyone have any advice about how to balance the idea of listening to POC about race with the idea of not making them do all the work in a conversation that needs to have race brought up?

    • @nobinary2296
      @nobinary2296 Год назад +18

      Talk with them about it and be honest. Be like, "I wanna be an ally but I have no clue on how to go about it. I don't wanna be insensitive or rude. So could you please help me go about bringing race into the conversation in the right way?" Make sure to be earnest about it as well.
      As a POC myself I would appreciate it if someone talked to me and let me know. It's one of the first steps to help.
      Also if you are ever confused by an action or their different point of view? Ask. Just like here. You could even ask for book recommendations on the subject.
      Edit to add: I don't need money I just like helping.

      Hey! black guy here. You are allowed to discuss race just remember to let others talk too (especially POC. It's not always necessary to bring up. A while ago one of my friends tried to explain to another friend that she shouldn't touch my hair whenever she wants without asking, that was great. It can feel like no one cares about this stuff who isn't affected. Bringing race up when you think a topic is ignoring it and advocating against racism when you see it is really helpful. Also check out what people of color have made about their experiences/thoughts and ask questions. (Please don't rely on the POC around you as google but there's many people who are cool with questions. Thanks for trying to help.
