Interesting to see how versatile these displays were when new. I was in Montreal last month, and unfortunately it seems the STM have abandoned them - they're only used for station announcements, and most of them have an abundance of dead pixels. I suppose it makes sense since a lot of the information they showed is accessible by phone now, but I think it would be nice if they still functioned as intended.
Mostly abandoned yea, but do receive program updates rarely, such as covid advisory programs in 2020, they also do show the state of metro service during large scale disruptions.
yea, I filmed that in 1993; only some trains had that type of information display - either it was still experimental at the time or had only just started to be installed throughout the system. For the day it was very advanced, and in many ways still is. I'm in London (England) and even today our underground trains dont have anything like this! Simon
Thank you so so much for posting this!!! It reminds me of the first time I took the metro and the screens had just been installed. I was what... 11 years old and incredibly excited! THANKS!!!
Wow, I didn’t know these displays were used that way before! Today they only show the next station and bus connections before going blank. Wish they would still show the weather!
I got on the metro today and the announcements (Prochaine station) was exacly like this, and at Henri-Bourassa, on the screen, it was written Merci d'avoir voyage avec la STCUM instead of STM! Just a note, the terminus is now Montmorency since 2007.
MysticMTL : I also LOVED the animations before the news, sports, and weather segments. When I'd get home from college (back in 1998) in the evening, I'd see the animation of the moon booting out the sun and making itself confortable on the cloud right before the weather reports.
Thanks. Well the video is now something like 14 years old! But its good that even with the changes you still have the displays working. I wish other cities would also use this technology. Simon
here in London our buses are only just getting passenger information systems announcing the next stops, and only some trains announce the next station. Simon
This brings back great memories of what it used to look like. I was wondering if you had any video of the animated sun or moon doing the weather report? That was hilarious and really fun to watch. I remember it was an animation used shortly after Telecite was created, until around 2000, then came back for a few months in 2003, but now is replaced with stupid text only bland reports.
sorry I am not sure if I have - and right now I cant even watch my videos to find out, as my video machine has gone wrong... I filmed these in S-VHS format and video machines for this format are no longer made, so I cant buy a new one! Simon
well for regular passengers the minimum of information would be required - they often know almost instinctively when they have arrived at their stop. Simon
maybe they now use a different person making the announcements? maybe also the 'tone' of the lady's voice has been changed by the multiple edits of the video recording & conversion by youtube into a low quality mono sound. I hope you had a pleasant time there. Simon
Only the Orange line trains (and possibly Blue line?) had those boards. They were quite useful in killing boredom ;) - something to lay your eyes on in a boring ride, but not that useful in telling you where to get off - I'd rely on the spoken messages instead (if available).
nice but the displays on the mr 73 today wont show news or anything at all. the only thing it shows its the days date and the sation also the information of the bus but nice video. i always wanted to see old footage of the metro being filmed in the pass when back then the STM was STCUM
Thanks for commenting. From what I remember what I filmed was experimental, it showed what was technically possible back in those days. This was an era when white LED lights had not yet been invented and things like personal computers (at home) and hand held smartphones were still the realms of science fiction. Later this month (March 2022) I will start making more RUclipss from Canada. More specifically I will be using footage that I videotaped in the early 1990s showing the Calgary C-Train but I'll include some Montreal Metro too.
Yes I have other footage, but cannot digitise anything at present as I am trying to get through some work related exams, so that I can get a better paid job and afford to go back to Canada. Hopefully I will have passed the exams by July. Simon
Did I reply? I thought I did - the video which was encoded starts partway through this advert. It is possible that sequence on the master tape began earlier, but I do not know. I'll try to find it and let you know.
@xestika123pame I have more from Montreal and later this year will put it on youtube. This short film was made 'many years ago' to demonstarte some information on my website.
One more thing, do you happen to have the first 30-45 seconds BEFORE this video starts? I wanted to see the Clairol commercial which, if I remember correctly, showed two girls riding a rollercoaster, one with the Clairol hairspray, one without... LOL
its a shame if they no longer work... its better to have something to look at, if onot to see how frequently the same adverts, the weather information, etc appears. I wish we had something like this in London - in many colours, with pictures, etc.
maybe there is a reason for this - different types of train perhaps? or that they plan to put new trains on this line soon? (or they just ran out money to pay for this system on the trains on this last line???) Simon
First time I went to Montreal was 2008 and I thought this was new "Cutting edge technology"...Didn't know it was so old. Light years ahead of other transit systems in North America *cough* TTC *cough*.
Hehe, here's another comment about this being old: the train stations! Gare Windsor...sadly it's not used anymore for trains. There's also not that many commuter lines compared with today!
I should mark this as spam, or even delete it, but having seen an older message which makes adverse comments between people from France and Quebec, so I am leaving it here. Otherwise I'd have to remove several messages en masse. Simon
@citytransportinfo There is a lot of mistakes in that sentence. "oui, it etait neuf et suelemont sur quelque trains." oui, il était neuf et seulement sur quelques trains. -- with a right spelling Oui, c'était nouveau et seulement sur quelques trains. -- grammatically correct If you have some questions, please send me a message.
Dans ce temps la les Mr-73 sonnais plus fort qu'aujourd'hui et je me souviens de ca quand jétais plus jeune je trippais sur le son comme aujourd'hui dailleur ca la pas changer :-) :P
The information display is the only cool thing about our metro. It constantly stop running, it smells bad, it's crowded and it's way too hot, making us sweat within minutes.
In fact... it is just publicity... so the displays are paid bay publicity to show you publicity. Dont look, it is useless and ugly now. They are all brocken.

I think only a few trains had them, and they were experimental
Wow so many memories
For a 1993 video, this Alstom screen had a big "BONAVENTURE" text. No wonder why change to small text.
I got on the metro today and the announcements (Prochaine station) was exacly like this, and at Henri-Bourassa, on the screen, it was written Merci d'avoir voyage avec la STCUM instead of STM!
Just a note, the terminus is now Montmorency since 2007.
the voice you hear now is Judith Ouimet and when it was re-recorded and up to present day its Michèle Deslauriers voice.

Cutting edge technology back then!
btw, as was said on an older message, this was only on a few trains as it was only just being introduced.
Simon
Thanks.

Simon
oh!
thanks for telling me - so this is now nostalgia too!
Simon
very nice. it's rare to find these videos of last-gen passenger information systems
27 years ago...
Wow it's great to see what it was back then... Thanks.

3,6 litres d'eau de javel au Jean-Coutu pour 0.99$.
filmed on 8 May 1993

Simon
Thanks.
I look forward to seeing your video.
Why did the buses only use it for a short time? Was it not reliable? Too expensive?
Simon

Agreed i miss the era
That's too bad to hear. I'm glad though that you were able to save something of this era!
Yes I have other footage, but cannot digitise anything at present as I am trying to get through some work related exams, so that I can get a better paid job and afford to go back to Canada. Hopefully I will have passed the exams by July.

what I thought too .. it's old .. interesting how BIG the station names were showing though.. more readable than now..
@xestika123pame I have more from Montreal and later this year will put it on youtube. This short film was made 'many years ago' to demonstarte some information on my website.
yes, it was filmed in 1993!
simon
Actually , they re-recorded the whole thing recently due to changes in some stations names..
The cool french-style voice announcing the stations also changed in 2003 for a more Quebec-style slang. I miss that voice.
Wow! Never knew the 168 stopped at Bonaventure before.
Check out the old network maps, there's a lot of treasures. ;)
For exemple, the 37 ending at Atwater
One more thing, do you happen to have the first 30-45 seconds BEFORE this video starts? I wanted to see the Clairol commercial which, if I remember correctly, showed two girls riding a rollercoaster, one with the Clairol hairspray, one without... LOL

That car still has it, and you can still hear those 90s quality announcements
The new Metro trains called AZUR has TV screens as ADS and no posters etither
yes. it was new - only on some trains.
oui, it etait neuf et suelemont sur quelque trains.
Simon
@coolsebas14 the exact date and time can be seen in the film!
maybe there is a reason for this - different types of train perhaps? or that they plan to put new trains on this line soon?
(or they just ran out money to pay for this system on the trains on this last line???)
Simon
@MTLtransitvideos
Thanks.
Simon

I wonder why?
Simon
wow thats really different from today its a different ladies voice now
Hehe, here's another comment about this being old: the train stations! Gare Windsor...sadly it's not used anymore for trains. There's also not that many commuter lines compared with today!
Hope you have element 41 (cars 81-581, 80-041, 81-582). It makes a very unique sound
Wow really 1993? Is still has the same animation for the stations.
Thanks for telling me. I suppose that it was found to work well, so it is still used. As the saying goes, "if it isn't broken, don't fix it!"
OH MY! That's like the year they were installed..
Remember when direction Henri-Bourassa was still a thing...
That still exists even if cartier to momorency exist
Yes, some trains end at Henri-Bourassa during rush hour.
I should mark this as spam, or even delete it, but having seen an older message which makes adverse comments between people from France and Quebec, so I am leaving it here. Otherwise I'd have to remove several messages en masse.

Wow gare windsor. Thats insane
Overcrowded and hot trains that make passengers sweat all the time are normal on many metro systems.
citytransportinfo this was made in 1993?!? 😨
Niox Studios the metro was made a long time ago.
@gorbache
Haha it's true. However with the new metro cars, which are expected for 2014, should have HD screens.
@citytransportinfo There is a lot of mistakes in that sentence.

it would help to have stop announcements on buses.
That’s why they mad them

8th of may 1999 woah that's long
I watch people on the Metro and hardly no one look at the displays, however I do look at them since I pay taxes for them lol!
im quite surprised its not in French and English,. they even do that in france!
Its 1993
yes, that was filmed in 1993 and its taken over 30 years to even start seeing something similar on British trains.
@coolsebas14 le 8 mai 1993
Nostagiaaaa
this sounds like a form of snobbery!
anyway, France is a big place with many regional accents of its own!
thats public transport! ;-)
c'est transport public! ;-)
@coolsebas14 may 8th, 1993
cool le javex est à 99 cennes XD
In fact... it is just publicity... so the displays are paid bay publicity to show you publicity. Dont look, it is useless and ugly now. They are all brocken.
