  • Am I too old to do ballet? That's what I've been asking myself for far too long. I never imagined I'd be here today finally living my dreams, but I'm a much happier, healthier person since I started to learn how to do ballet.
    And the truth I've discovered from learning this beautiful art of dance is that it is NEVER too late to start ballet.
    Don't worry if you're a late starter, there are so many people I know who didn't even THINK of starting dance until they were older than me or you. So don't get discouraged by age, just DANCE!
    You're not too old, or too young, or too fat, or too poor, or not good enough. Dance is for anyone and everyone and if you feel the need to express yourself through movement, please try taking a class, it could change your life.

      Hi there, I am 50 years old and I’m in the same boat as you. I found that there are dozens of excellent training programs online for adult dancers. Even on RUclips. (and yes, even Pointe ). You can subscribe and get personalized classes where they broadcast on zoom, and they can see your body and give you corrections. It’s almost just as good as being in a real class.
      Of course nothing as awesome as being in the studio. But I’ve done a ton of work at home and improved tremendously. I bought a ballet bar (the one they sell at target is is the best one… Don’t waste your money on any of the others). And I pull it out a couple of times a week and just drill and drill and drill exercises. Very slowly, I have overcome weaknesses, improved my technique, and of course, I’m loving the way my body looks and feels.
      Eventually, when the time is right, you will find a studio with an adult dance class. Until now, join us online because that’s where we all are!

      I understand that as well. I started when I was 28. I ended up taking classes with teenagers and young teens. The teens were actually pretty open to it because they once had a much older lady take classes with them as well. But the teacher seemed somewhat condescending towards me. A few years later, more in shape, and in more advanced classes, I ran into that teacher who seemed really surprised at my progress. We have to start somewhere to change these stigmas and beliefs. I was told at 18 I was too old to start anything performance related. I can honestly say, it is a lie. You are just as capable as a teen. I have seen 60 year olds start dancing and in a few years, they have beautiful strong bodies and look just a graceful as the younger dancers. And considering the health crisis in America, dance is a very powerful way to not only keep in shape, but motivate one into a healthy lifestyle and keep you very strong and active.

    I love this! I'm pusuing art with 35 now. I know exactly how things people say can linger within us and hold us back, because we believe them. Especially when it comes from role figures or teachers.
    But I also know how liberating it feels to start listen to your heart and just do what you love!

I then came onto this video straight away; maybe it's the algorithms lol well done 🎉

I had a mental breakdown from the stress of working and writing my thesis...and I decided to do what I always wanted to do...study ballet finally. I had to move to Mexico City to take classes and find a better job, but I don't care...I'm finally doing what I wanted to do.

    I think its because people think or assume when people want to do things like ballet, that they expect specific things that may be possible only in certain cases, like be the leading ballerina in a royal paris opra house. But what people forget to think or realize is that being in the present and actually enjoying and loving it is worth more than the future. Because how can if you have a happy future if you dont have a happy present. Not that if youre feeling bad its inavlid though, what youre feeling, good or bad, true or false, its valid

    I took ballet for 3 years when I was a child. During that time, I had to take medication, which made me gain a bit of weight (3-5kg) and my mom pulled me out of class because in her words, „ballet was not for fat girls“. It took so much of my confidence away and even when I lost the weight years later, I still feel too self-conscious to dance. I now restarted ballet at 29 yrs old and I‘m enjoying it so much. It‘s true when they say, going into your 30s, you‘ll start doing things again, that you enjoyed as a child, but this time with no shame and no judgement.

    I wanted to do ballet when I was little, but my mother didn't allow me to. I'm turning 20 next month, and I've officially started taking classes. I can't help but wish that I might, in some years, get so good that I can maybe start doing or studying it professionally - like I've always wanted to. But I'm pretty sure that's never going to be possible since every ballet school wants people who started young. But I can still enjoy, you know, just doing it.

    • @VeronicaViccora

      I have a friend who just turned pro at 32! Also, there are countless ways to be a "professional dancer" even if it's not in a ballet company specifically (commercial dancing like tv, movies, music videos, etc, dancing in plays, dancing in smaller theaters, starting your own dance company or dance studio, teaching dance, etc) and you can ABSOLUTELY find ways to perform, paid or unpaid, even when starting late. But yes, it's also MORE than okay to just dance for the love of it, just don't let the world keep you small

  • @quixotichippie
    @quixotichippie 3 месяца назад

    I started late too, fell more for modern than ballet but still trained in every style i could... I'm approaching 50 now and disabled but still choreograph and teach privates when i can, and I had some wonderful years of teaching, performing, directing a small dance company... so keep going, it's worth it!!
    also (unsolicited, i know... intended with much love and support): remember to keep your pelvis stable and level, you have a tendency to let your pelvis/hip follow your working leg ❤

    To be fair, she isn't entirely wrong. It is much harder to become a proffesional ballerina if you start late, specially as an adult, your future as a ballerina wont be bright. But what's important here is that if you enjoy doing it, is all that matters! I heard that the real ballerina world is full of rivalries, drama, competition, body toxicity, you call it. I'd very much prefer to keep it as a hobby

    • @VeronicaViccora
      @VeronicaViccora  9 месяцев назад +4

      Unfortunately naysayers don't often ask you what your goals actually are. Many late starters aren't trying ballet because they intend to be professional. But everyone assumes you mean that you plan to become a principle dancer for the NYCB so they tell you it's impossible. Instead we could all practice leaning in and asking questions or encouraging someone for exploring a new side of themselves instead of making assumptions.

    I just started learning how to ice skate after two decades of having internalized that "it wasn't something people that looked like me did". Now am doing group lessons weekly and private lessons twice a month. Am not looking at taking ballet lessons to correct some posture issues. It took a while too but am glad I got here. Getting rid of those thoughts it's hard and take a very long time but for me, it was paying attention to my day dreams and picking out the voice that kept whispering anytime I so much as tried to Google stuff on it. Again, not an easy thing to do but when you ask yourself why not, be mindful that what might be holding you back is something someone told you or a perfection you got and then assume that's how it is and write it down. Interrogating that voice becomes easier the more you ask it why.
