He was trying to teach Akali and the kid a lesson about balance, he didn't want the kid to die. When he tells Akali that "the balance must be returned" he wasn't talking about the kid dying, he was indirectly telling her to plant the seed to return balance
I think it's more, there's more than one way to restore balance. When 2=2, but 1>2, you can either subtract from 2, or add to 1, to restore balance. The guardian was going to subtract, Akali added just in time. Shen was totally fine with the kid dying, as he is the eye of twilight. But akali being young and impressionable, took actions into her own hands.
Also at 0:25 when akali pulls out her weapon he sarcastically said " with your steel?" Which means that shen was already setting up that violence is not the only way to restore balance.

Yeah that's the whole point. Shen was trying to teach a lesson to the impulsive Akali. You can even see how Akali panics when she realizes that her mindless use of force without analyzing the situation nearly got the kid killed. It's basically a Kinkou training of "using force only as a last resort".

I think an important part of restoring the balance, as Shen speaks of it, is not just in planting the sapling and restoring life to the forest for the life that was taken from it. The boy's selfish act was also balanced out by Akali's selfless defense of the child. You could definitely argue that it's for the drama. That it's just how it panned out, saplings take time to grow, etc. etc. - but the sprout was not a smol boi. That was a full twig in like a second - and it only started to grow after Akali's (attempted) self-sacrifice in shielding the boy.

Even some members of the kinkou advocate for a more direct confrontation with the invaders. Here shen showed akali the way to “teach noxians a lesson” and restore the balance peacefully.

I view Shen as very intelligent. The “test” shen was talking about was probably what she would do to save the kid. Shen kept trying to “bait” her into failing by pressuring her to let the kid die. To me, Akali passed shens test by saving the boy. When Akali demanded they bend the rules, Shen did not object, and actually began to observe her test. Edit: Shen was more than likely talking about restoring balance and not necessarily the kid as some have pointed out. Unless riot is painting a more heroic picture of Shen rather than just a crazy guy who doesn’t care what happens as long as the balance is restored.

Right at the beginning he questions akali when she says she is going to teach him a lesson with her steel.
You have to remember noxians are invading ionia and everybody is dealing with them by sword. Not the kinkou, the kinkou seek a peaceful way. Even some members of the kinkou advocate for a more direct confrontation with the invaders. Here shen showed akali the way to “teach noxians a lesson” and restore the balance peacefully.
The kinkou's actions were also costing lots of Ionian lives

Edit; I also did forget to mention; Akali literally only saw violence as the means to an end. Cannonically Shen is faster than even Zed and Zed has insane reaction time. Shen could easily save those two at the last second. I view Shen as very intelligent. The “test” shen was talking about was probably what she would do to save the kid. Shen kept trying to “bait” her into failing by pressuring her to let the kid die. To me, Akali passed shens test by saving the boy. When Akali demanded they bend the rules, Shen did not object, and actually began to observe her test.
Edit: Shen was more than likely talking about restoring balance and not necessarily the kid as some have pointed out. Unless riot is painting a more heroic picture of Shen rather than just a crazy guy who doesn’t care what happens as long as the balance is restored.

Of course it's similar, it's made by the same animation studio. And yes I agree, would love an Ionian animation. From what I hear Arcane season 2 might involve noxus and I'm guessing season 3 might be the noxian invasion on ionia...but keep in mind, those are just rumours for now.
