They are just like people....sometimes there is that spark that can get really intense and it will either burn forever or fade, either way....sit back and enjoy the ride that it gives you.
Man! The tone from that thing really took me back in time! What really blew me away was how versatile it is, a couple of times i would have sworn you were playing a telecaster. Thanks for sharing this.
HI, first time poster here and thanks for the demo I enjoyed it a lot. I had a 1978 IC400 with that same green interior case. It was a great guitar that I got from some dude from a old publication called the recycler and got a great deal of like 600.00 back in 2000. It was a magical guitar with exceptional tone. Overtime I picked it up I played twice as good seriously. Unfortunately I sold it during a tough time and regret it literately on a daily basis and hope to replace it with an equal if not better model. There was the same model you have there on Reverb earlier this year that looked great and even had a video on you tube and it started at 2500.00 I believe and went down to 1800.00 I believe but I just wasn't in a position to get it as I had just picked up some gear pryor but it was in almost as good of shape as yours. They are very rare and your correct about the amount of units produced or at least offered in the U.S. at the time. I wanted to ask you,Now I know they aren't anything like the originals but what is your opinion on these IC520 Ibanez reissues that are being sold lately ? I think they are made in Korea but I'm not sure. Have you tried one out in your travels just out of curiosity. I was thinking of getting one to hold me over until I can find the real deal. Maybe change the pick ups. Are they complete junk? Thank man. Love the demo again. Keep on trucking'.
Man that things got some killer and unique tones.... Would love to hear the various settings through a modern high gain tube amp, playing some old school thrash stuff
Wow - I absolutely LOVE this video! Huge Ibanez fan myself, and a bit of a collector. It's amazing to see your IC210, and I just LOVE the way it sounds! Cheers! Leo
Scott, that Steve Miller guitar sounds Awesome man. I played the video over again and i turned around and it sounded just Like Steve was playing it. That was great. You are lucky to have that. Thanks for the Demo, Cheers, Gary
Yeah, it was mind blowing for the day. Then the same one with the sliding pickup or with 2 of these pickups...wow. Just a real breakthrough that never caught on because it was too forward thinking for simple folks.
You have the most Amazingly awsome Iceman Collection I've ever seen, including this Holy Grail of the rare old Japanese models.. My dream guitar is a 78-79 Iceman.. either this 3-coil 210, or just maybe a standard ic400. Beautiful and well done video sir! Thanks so much! Sadly there is a 210 on Reverb right now someone destroyed by replacing the 3coil and the switch and wiring.. such a tradgedy.
It WAS purchased from a pawn shop by a dealer. The dealer lives in California. I don't know which pawn shop it came out of for sure though. So, if you saw THIS SIGNATURE, then it would almost HAVE to ve the same axe. VERY COOL!
I fully agree with you. These pickups and wiring are simply amazing. What it honestly comes down to is the idiocy of the average player. The majority of guitarists are brainwashed to believe that 2 pickups and a couple of knobs is the way it was meant to be. Why, because that is what was originally offered in the early 50's. Everybody is on a vintage kick and they can't get their head's out of their butts and accept something new (40 year old triple coil pickup...lol). It's truly sad huh?
Yeah, these really have a certain vibe for sure. Hamer put out a triple coil pickup axe too. There are a couple of others out there at the moment, but they don't do what this puppy does. It just "works" for whatever reason. lol
I have a guitar with a similar finish and also signed with a silver sharpie, any advice of how can I preserve the signature so I don't erase it while I play? Maybe a lacquer or varnish or something? Also, it's freaking amazing how that pickup sounds, simply amazing.
I dont' own any 70's era Ibanez guitars, but I do have several Roadstars, made circa 84-86, and they're all fabulous axes. Maybe one of these days I should do some videos on them.
This is sooooooo cool, I remember these, I use to have a 1978 Ibanez Artist with the super 88's flying fingers pickups & tri-tone switches, sustain black under the bridge half-bone and brass nut, it was my 1st good guitar( it was the 3rd one I owned) bought it used for $350 in 1979/80 ( I had it on lay away, LOL!) from Chicago Music Co.( not Chicago Music Exchange, this was before their time), but I traded it in 1985 for a much cheaper made Ibanez Destroyer X series because it had a whammy bar, really dumb trade, that Artist was GREAT!!! AWSOME video, I think this is the only 1 out there!!! You ROCK my friend, be safe, Rock On & God Bless!!!
1. What currently-made pickups would you personally use to try to duplicate that triple-coil monster, were you inclined to attempt to do so? 2. E is the 5th letter of the alphabet. :P
Pretty pricey if you can find em with the triple coil, switching and stuff intact. There is a 78 210 on Reverb for sale cheap right now, because sadly whomever previously owned it butchered it by removing the triple coil and the ekectornics.. Suh a shame. It's still going for $1500... I love my 78 ibanez ST-50.. and this is one of my dream guitars.
I have one from 1978 as well, D786916...It's been taken apart and my original 3 coil pickup and the bridge and tailpiece suffered some corrosion during Hurricane Sandy but I feel like I should restore it seeing as there were only 68 of these things made that year....Thanks for the info....:)
Hey Scotty! Wondering if you've ever taken photos of that triple-coil pickup from the underside? In particular, the individual wire connections? Working on an IC210 and the pickup doesn't sound right, but YOURS does!
Many thanks. Yeah, this thing is so amazingly surprising with that one pickup. They sure did it right when they did the wiring in that puppy. You are right....it can get a great Tele tone and just all of those CLASSIC sounds that ooze out of it right away. It has that "I KNOW THAT SOUND" thing going for it. I was playing that guitar for a couple of hours last night actually. It just looked like it wanted to be played instead of just looked at. lol Cheers, Scott
man that thing sounds awesome i was waiting for you to get one of these definitly the most strange incarnations of the ice man nice to know how these work and how they sound is like a huge wight off my back
Woow... Thanks dad... Got his 2663SL which he got new in 1975, but he almost didn't play since he never liked the sound but bought for the looks. He added 2 additional pickups in his days :-( Getting really curious about the sound without those addtional PUs (I think he screwed up the sound - I hope he didn't mess up the wiring). That pickup looks exactly like that one on a sliding mechanism... Cool! Now at least I know what it should sound like ;-) Thanks!
Still blows my mind that "Jet Airliner" was recorded with an Iceman(very versatile)....Ibanez and Peavey(which I'm very partial to) both made guitars in that era and beyond that can smoke anything that either Fender or Gibson cranked out. Great score on the IC 210...and the provenance makes this one stand out even moreso.
God I wish I could find a 70s ic400 I can afford.. lol. I've wanted one since I was 13yo and first picked up a guitar... Now I'm almost 40, and still haven't ever owned an Iceman. :(
Badass guitar! Sounded like you played a little taste if the song "Fantasy." A friend of mine has an Ibanez Artist with an inscription on the tailpiece dated 1980. It's a double cutaway with a carved top.
Scott, what is that lick/rhythm thing you are doing at 16:45-17:35? I really like that and would love to see how you did it. Oh, thanks for the view of this ice man guitar, never heard of a triple coil before.
Scott, how come there's not more triple coil pickups out there? Seems to me with all the myriad number of generic clone guitars produced these days, someone would get smart and reintroduce the triple coil or sliding pickups again, so as to stand out and be different than the rest of the pack. thx
Yeah, that guitar is a total wreck. It's got a cracked headstock, it's been repainted using a spray paint can, it's got Fender knobs on it, non original pickups etc. It has WAAAAAAAAY too many things wrong with it. I feel sorry for whoever gets it and "SEES" what the seller isn't telling them.
