Your bro seems to understand a bit more than you about the game ;) but you're right about one thing: he's efficient and supremely so. His game doesn't rely on fancy flicks or tricks like say Ronaldinho (who I absolutely love) but body feints, nutmegs and change of pace and/or direction. Most of the defenders simply can't get near him and he makes them look like kids. What he does master more than any other great player in history (trust me on this one) is close control of the ball. When he dribbles, the ball is so close to his foot that you just can't take it away from him without either fouling him or selling yourself short by you sticking your leg out (which is exactly what he waits for). His footballing IQ and vision are also miles above the rest and he thinks 2-3 steps ahead of his opponents. Also don't underestimate his body strength: he's incredibly tough and his center of gravity is very low. All of this makes him a nightmare to defend against and the opponent never relies on individual man marking but more on a team effort with 2-3 players around him. The greatest defenders acknowledged as being the toughest player they have or had to face. The best way to keep him out of a game is to prevent him from getting the ball.

Your bro seems to understand a bit more than you about the game ;) but you're right about one thing: he's efficient and supremely so. His game doesn't rely on fancy flicks or tricks like say Ronaldinho (who I absolutely love) but body feints, nutmegs and change of pace and/or direction. Most of the defenders simply can't get near him and he makes them look like kids.
What he does master more than any other great player in history (trust me on this one) is close control of the ball. When he dribbles, the ball is so close to his foot that you just can't take it away from him without either fouling him or selling yourself short by you sticking your leg out (which is exactly what he waits for). His footballing IQ and vision are also miles above the rest and he thinks 2-3 steps ahead of his opponents. Also don't underestimate his body strength: he's incredibly tough and his center of gravity is very low.
All of this makes him a nightmare to defend against and the opponent never relies on individual man marking but more on a team effort with 2-3 players around him. The greatest defenders acknowledged as being the toughest player they have or had to face. The best way to keep him out of a game is to prevent him from getting the ball.

The reason some defenders don’t get the ball is bc they used to, but he’s so fast, physically, but also mentally that if you tackle to get the ball you’re already to late and now you’re on the ground and he’s running away... it’s like a chess player who’s already 3 steps ahead!

I know he was just joking about "just getting the ball" but still, you gotta wonder how often Messi didn't feint but committed to those moves for the defenders to go "I can't delay even a little bit. The only way I catch him is if I react the second he starts moving." and all of a sudden, when you finally think you'll be able to stop him he suddenly hits you with the first feint of the game and breaks your ankles.
Messi if probably the only player to really deserve the title of GOAT, as in he might not be the best player right now, at an age where he is getting ready for retirement, but during his prime he was not just the best active player, but the best player in the history of the sport. Bro you have to understand, if you run at Messi and try to 'take the ball' as you think you could, he's gonna nutmeg you, hit it past you, or just straight up violate you. If you take him out without touching the ball you get a red card.
