    If you add a control line and push it passed the image boundary you effectively have a "filled mask". You can then place the selection pipette tool anywhere in the image and make a selection based on the colour/tone under the selection tool. The luma and chroma sliders then enable you to refine the selection based on both luma and/or colour.

    Thank you for taking the time to explain all the features, you are very easy on the ear and should be employed by DXO to do their tutorials. I find Photo Joseph the most annoying presenter who likes the sound of his own voice and I never get to fully watch DXO tutorials to the end as it takes for ever for him to pass on the information of the product. I bet that the are lots of people who think the same as me which means DXO has less upgrade sales. So thank you again.

    Thank you Todd for this outstanding explanation of some of PhotoLab 5's features. As a relative newcomer to this software your presentation has been enormously helpful and, frankly, inspirational. It's opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities, particularly as you mentioned, with my older RAW files. Bravo....

    Very Good presentation Todd. I would just like to point out one thing regarding the round trip editing section, specifically when you decide to do color work in PhotoLab and then export as DNG all corrections applied to Lightroom. Lightroom uses Prophoto RGB (or very close to it) as it's working color space whereas PhotoLab uses Adobe RGB. So, on receiving the DNG file from PhotoLab, Lightroom will assign Prophoto RGB color space to the file and display it as such. This means that depending on the image there could be a colour shift. This may not be very much, as it depends on the colours in the image, but it's a possibility. Photoshop on the other hand, can identify that the color space is different, if you have set it up to do so and then give you the choice to keep it as Adobe RGB should you wish. Just something to bear in mind.

    An excellent introduction to PL5 which is now my main if not only RAW processing programme. A slight criticism of the video: the HSL wheel demo comes a bit short. The color picker allows a very fast and precise hue correction while feathering is adjusted on the external wheel.

    This is by far the best explainer video for PhotoLab I have seen. I recently purchased PhotoLab 6 and I've been having difficulty finding good tutorials for it. It would be amazing if you could create a series of tutorials (perhaps funded by DxO) explaining each section of PhotoLab 6 and suggested workflows. Excellent job on this!

    Thanks for this excellent overview of DXO 5 I currently use version 4 and love it. I shoot a Nikon D810 and a Fuji XT3 and am excited version 5 will allow raw processing for Fuji. Up to now I’ve had to use Capture 1 express for my Fuji raws. I really prefer DXO for both my Nikon and now Fuji editing. Thanks again for bringing us this overview.

      Hey, I just got it for my Fuji raw and it took a bunch of 12800 exposures and totally mastered them with the Deep Prime. I got great b&w low to no light performance shots. Capture One express completely fell on its face on them, leaving me desperate enough to check out DXO-5. Good bye Capture One, a very frustrating solution anyway.

    Awesome Review! I just started Photography with an X100V and discarded PL as it didn’t support X-Trans sensors. When PL5 came out, I tried it and was quite impressed. But it still works slower than Capture One.
    I was about to get over to Capture One… but am quite disappointed by the Black Friday deals.
    DxO, on the other hand, is very generous. I will therefore invest in DxO. I have no doubt that I’ll be able to do all I need in DxO.

    Just bought it 3-4 days ago and enjoyed it very much. The only thing I wish was integration with Nik's collection (from DxO also). I wish it can apply the changes on the existing image instead of exporting it out to a new file. Other than that, the optics correction is superb.

    I just bought this thing because it is doing an astonishing job on images from a Halloween performance that I had to shoot at iso 12800 with my Fuji, some underexposed at that. I need b&w images and they are coming out fantastic using Deep Prime on them. For some reason they do better if exported as dng and imported into adobe raw for final fine tuning. Thanks a lot for this, I'm still learning and have a ways to go. I was using the free Capture One Fuji raw converter, but it fell apart big time at the 12800 level.

    Lightroom - DXO roundup and support of Fuji RAWs bring me back to DXO - it is a real deal breaker. I like it so much but I had to abandon it when I start shooting Fuji so I started to use Captore one but I dont like its implementation of local adjustments. Now I'm happy and started to process photos much much more often!!! Bravo DXO!

    This video came back up on my suggestions list again (even though I watched it previously last year when it came out). Having now bought PL5, I have to say that it's got some great features and a very good value for the money (even if you buy it at full price, which at the time for me was about $200 for the standalone perpetual licensed version). Even if you just use some of the features like the de-noising and lens corrections and lens sharpness functions, it's worth it, and I'm glad it can generate a DNG and send it back to LR, which is one thing that not many third party apps can do. Usually they create a TIFF which I think you lose some edit ability when converting from a DNG or RAW file to a TIFF, so this is nice that it does this. Of course with the more recent DeNoise AI found in LR Classic, this has probably made buying PL for noise reduction a little less appealling since it is another purchase, but even comparing PL5's denoising to LR's newest built-in AI denoising, I almost still prefer DXO, so to me, PL5 is a great value (having waited this long, I'm just going to wait for PL7 to be released and then upgrade perhaps, since PL7 should be released around October of this year -- 2023). It's not as powerful as say Luminar, but the price can't be beat and if you get it on a CM/BF deal, it's even beter (usually 40%-50% off). I'd say even if you use another raw processor like LR, adding PL to you workflow can be a benefit, it doesn't have to be your primary RAW processor (it isn't in my workflow) but it offers some features that LR simply doesn't have, and some features it just does a lot better than LR, so for some of my images I may send them over to PL from LR before returning to LR and finishing up, others I will start in LR and the nsend to DXO and then send back to LR as a DNG). It's a very flexibile program/workflow that you can fit into your existing workflow.

      Just a small point. The PL5 control point interface is similar in style to the old Nik tools but the actual tools available are different and in my opinion not as good. But OTOH Nik are abandoning that style in their latest versions, which is a huge pity! But if you are familiar with the PL5 toolset then maybe the PL5 menus will be fine. The two organisations both work for DxO but seem frustratingly unable to unify the tool features and styles.

    Very informative for me as a long time DxO user! I just discovered the DxO batch processing feature. This may change my work flow when processing a large number of photos. I ran a batch with optics and denoise exported to tiff. Then used AuroraHDR2019 batch processing of the DxO tiff files. The combo resulted in dramatic improvements and increased "keepers". Many images require no further editing! Those that do would only need minor, selective edits to polish the image. Batch processing starting with DxO improved a large number of images in short time, increased keepers and helped get to the best of the batch for polishing. WOW! Great presentation and I'm now a subscriber! Keep up your good work!

      Are you aware of the HDR function in DXO PhotoLab? You don’t have to do a round trip to AuroraHDR if you don’t want to. The best part is that DXO maintain the raw format all through the HDR process. You’re even able to output the final HDR result in a DNG format, for further editing in other softwares. For me, this makes DXO PhotoLab the best HDR processor on the market since it gives you all the available options to work on the HDR composite including local adjustments, DeepPRIME noise reduction, micro contrasts, optical corrections, etc directly on a RAW composite rather than a TIFF file. So much more leverage!

I still need to use the tool some more but I am almost confident that it is way more powerful than LR.

  • @HR-wd6cw
    @HR-wd6cw 2 года назад +2

    Can PhotoLab send files to/from Photoshop? I don't see a whole lot of an advantage of a PL -> LR workflow, but PL to/from Photoshop might be more helpful.
    After playing with PL a little, I do agree that the corrections applied are better. Adobe, for example, doesn't seem to have any lens corrections (or very few) for LR for the Nikon Z cameras (partially because Nikon embeds the profile in the RAW file, but other programs like CaptureOne let you turn it on/off). But it just seems that camera/lens profiles are rather sparse in other programs, but DXO has a more extensive line of profiles for the Nikon Z system.
    I do like the no-catalog approach (I stopped using LR and went back to Bridge/ACR because with around 20,000+ images I felt my LR catalog was getting a little sluggish, even with optimization, but with Bridge and ACR it's not, and this tneds to fit my workflow better anyway as I don't necessarily need the syncing options to apply settings to multiple files; plus I find myself storing files in a way that I can probably find them just as fast using a Windows Explorer / Mac Finder window that I would in a catalog form (as I was having my catalog structure mimic my file structure).

    Thanks for the review Todd. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts about integration with Capture One, not just Lightroom. In particular, can C1’s use of Fujifilm film presets be retained and integrate with PL5? DxO’s Filmpack is nowhere near as accurate with regard to the presets unfortunately. The other thing worth mentioning is that PL has to run on Rosetta if using Apple’s M1 chips and this makes it relatively slow. Both these things are show stoppers for me at present.

    • @freetibet1000

      I’m a Capture One user that sometimes use PhotoLab for its excellent DeepPRIME noise reduction. The integration between these two programs aren’t as smooth as Todd showed here between PL & LR but easy enough for me. I begin with open the raw file in PL and do the things a want to do to it there and then export it as a DNG (which will land in the same directory on your hard drive next to your raw file). Then, back in Capture One all I have to do to see it is to right-click on the folder of its location and choose “Synchronize” and it will appear next to your original raw file in Capture One. It will have that _DxO added to its name also.
      If you’re into film emulation softwares I suggest you check Alien Skin Exposure out, if you haven’t tried it out already.
      I also agree on your comment that PhotoLab is a bit slower than other softwares on M1 machines. Especially the export process.

    I've been using DxO's PhotoLab (formerly called OpticsPro) for the last six years with my Canon RAW files, which I've been shooting for about 20 years.
    I adopted DxO's software on the basis of a comparison done by Ron Martinson back then, showing the different color rendition of the same Canon RAW file by Canon Digital Photo Professional, Adobe Camera RAW, DxO OpticsPro (as it was called then) and a few others.
    I hated DPP because at that point in time I had to maintain multiple versions of it for RAW files from different generations of camera bodies - at least they stopped *that* nonsense. DPP does do optical corrections, but only for Canon-made lenses, while DxO corrects third-party lenses as well (they are a testing house, after all).
    It was clear from the images in his post that DxO's color rendition was the closest to DPP's, so I said goodbye to Lightroom (and its catalog system!). DxO's tweaks to a file are in outboard files, which allows nondestructive editing and thus multiple versions. They also build excellent noise reduction into PhotoLab.
    Most importantly, I discovered that if I wanted to keep DxO's Canon-faithful color rendition, I should not use DNG files to export to Lightroom and Photoshop - since a DNG would have to go through ACR, with the result that Adobe's color rendition would override DxO's - but use TIFFs, which go directly into Lightroom and Photoshop, preserving Canon's colors.
    I've got an order in for an R7 and I've been hoping DxO adds support for it by the time it arrives.

  • @ernreeders5583
    @ernreeders5583 2 года назад

    Windows version:
    No auto sharpness options.
    Swapping edits between PL and LR has been available since PL3.
    Control point effects bleed beyond the circle so you need to reveal the mask to see what's happened. Within the circle, the area affected is supposed to match the characteristics of the sample point. This works poorly in v 4 and 5.
    Window behavior is perverse, when clicking on a window in the background doesn't bring it forward, and selecting an image on the film strip will sometimes give you the one beside it.

    What I don't seem to find is how I do a lens correction in Photolab 4. In lightroom you just select your type of lens and it's done. I can't find that feature in Photolab. For now I did it manually with the distorion function... Any tutorial about that?

    • @ianyorke2617
      @ianyorke2617 2 года назад

      DXO needs to support your lens/camera combination and then it applies lens corrections tailored for that lens. It will prompt you to download the relevant lens module whenever it sees a new lens, unless you have turned this off in preferences.

    I have owned every version of PhotoLab until 4, this will be the first I'll skip, because my RAW editor of choice (ON1 Photo RAW) has caught up with almost everything DxO had. ON1 (which btw also allows browsing folders without importing) has added their NoNoise technology to version 2022, which in my experience is not only comparable to DxO but is much faster too. The only thing DxO is still better at is perspective correction, but that didn't get a relevant upgrade this year. Let's see what the future brings.

      I don’t know abour ON1 2022.
      But in recovering blown out highlights in sun facing sunrise shots, only C1, PL5 and LR were able to do a good job. ACDSee, Exposure 7, On1, Luminar, Affinity and all the others I’ve tested left a bigh white patch in the sky.
      And not bein able to do so is a No Go for me.

      From what I understand, the DeepPRIME in PureRAW is nearly the same as DeepPRIME in PhotoLab 5. The main difference is PureRAW applies sharpening (with options for normal or light sharpening). PhotoLab 5’s DeepPRIME functions without sharpening. You apply sharpening through the separate Lens Sharpening tool (if you want it).

I’m not sure what the story is with PhotoLab 5 and the M1 support? I’m still using PhotoLab 4 on a Rosetta 2 emulation on my M1 computer. Photolab in my experience is far superior to Lightroom when using Deep Prime in sharpness, dynamic range, noise reduction and lens correctioons. Color control seems difficult. But, what keeps me from using Photolab for everything is when using Deep Prime exporting images can take 10 minutes a file due to all the "processing". My computer does not have a good enough Graphics card. So the program resorts to CPU. 28gigs of RAM is meaningless and you may as well go to bed and let the computer run overnight to process the files to tiff or dng or jpg on export.
