Grand Trunk’s paint scheme is so nice. I’m glad that at least a few locomotives still have the paint scheme and they even have a GTW Heritage Unit with the paint scheme. So I’m glad that remnants of the railroad still around. Great video by the way. ❤️👍🏻
The Grand Trunk Western Railroad was pretty cool to see when they were still in business back then in the past, especially during the days of Steam Locomotives. And might’ve been a shame that the railroad became discontinued years ago. At least we have preserved stuff of this quaint railroad, with the unfortunate of Grand Trunk Western 5629. In my imaginational vision, it could’ve been displayed at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois if it was never scrapped in the first place. In fact I did manage to visit the Illinois Railway Museum back in October 7th and 8th 2023, I did get to see a few former Grand Trunk Western Railroad Equipment, like Grand Trunk Western 6323.
I would be quite impressed if 6323 were made operational, but that would probably require an absurd amount of money to make sense, since that is a main line locomotive.
WOW ! Thank you for bringing back some of my childhood memories ! Grew up in Oxford and would race my bicycle down to the tracks just in time to see the train roll by ! So many great memories ! Building a n scale GTW railroad in the basement as we speak . Think it's time to go work on the railroad !
My town was started because of the Grand Trunk. Mt Brydges was named after both the highest point between London and Windsor, and the commissioner of the Grand Trunk at the time. However nowadays while VIA Rail does run through the town, it does not stop anymore, instead blasting past at 125km/h
6325 Return to Steam covers the former Grand Trunk Western 4-8-4 #6325's inaugural excursions for new owner Ohio Central. As an added bonus, you will see 2 separate break-in runs as the crew makes modifications and test the locomotive. Then it's the first public excursions in the fall of 2001, operating on the line between Columbus and Dennison. Multiple camera coverage documents the best action on these test runs, and first excursions, for this; the largest operating steam locomotive, east of the Mississippi River, in the United States.
I was born in 1990 and throughout my childhood I spent days upon days at the Durand Union Depot that place was like a second home and as a child I remember the Grand trunk good track road days. I remember watching red, white and blue locomotives come flying through there at high speeds with trains and I remember Durand being quite very busy in those days today. It's not the same as it was when I was a kid. Still you have some good days when it can be busy but if anything I miss the Grand trunk days and I wish I could. Relive them again
Fun fact! The Muskegon car ferry was originally the Grand Haven car ferry! Part of the original GTW station still sits on the edge of the grand river, though it was gutted for commercial use. Other bits of GTW infrastructure can also still be seen, such as a coaling tower and the north station still passed by the MMRR
One of my favorite locomotives is NPR 2288, an ex GT gp9, still sporting its original high hood. While not in any kind of GT livery, it still wears red white and blue paint, with its original road number and GT logo showing through the faded paint-over. Even if the GT never served South Dakota, (where this unit is currently serving) the line that this unit works on was once almost exclusively dominated by high hood EMD power in the days of the Milwaukee road and Dakota Southern. It may not be as important or powerful as the six axle sd7s or 9s that came before it, but it shows that vintage power can still be useful. (It’s also really funny to see it alongside modern locomotives, some of which being CN helpers on BNSF trains)
Fantastic work as always, Jared! Enjoyed hearing about the history of a railroad from your neck of the woods. Never really gave the Grand Trunk much thought until your video, so all things considered, fantastic work!
Grand Trunk i grew up watching in South Bend. Amazed how much had changed. I still remember when they got the ex UP SD40-2s and had the red noodle on long hood and the mix of good and fouled M3 horns
I like how Grand Trunk Can Relate to the Canadian National because The Canadian National Steam Locomotives look a lot like they are identical to the 6325.
One of the most famous engines of the GTW was Pacific 5629, It was owned by Richard Jensen and was unfortunately scrapped in 1987 and caused outrage among many railfans to this day
@@Voucher765They tried. Hell, even Metra tried to preserve #5629 but Jensen and his greediness refused to sell, thinking if they scrapped the locomotive, he could take them to court and get a lot of money.
@Train_Tok_Man That is true and which is why Jensen is looked upon often as a very controversial figure in the railfan community when it comes to the situation of 5629, If any group such as the IRM or any preservation organization could've intervened before Richard Jensen made his move the 5629 story could've been very different but that was sadly not the case and the engine as we all know went to scrap
There used to be a green trunk Western railroad that went through my city of walled Lake. It was bought by Coe Rail and now the entire thing a bike trail. The portion that goes through my city is called the Michigan airline Trail.
I grew up near the GT line that originally went from Ashley, MI to Muskegon, MI. Reduced in millage to service mostly Gibson/Frigidaire in Greenville. Now only a remnant is left operated by a short line to Middleton, Mi
In order receive public funds for track maintainence and the such, it can only be awarded to US-based railroads, that's why GTW, IC and WC still exist on paper.
The steel mill in my hometown ran ex GTW 0-8-0's as switch engines well into the 70s and 80s. This was before I was born, but my grandpa told me they were a phenom to see and people flocked in from everywhere to see them. There's even one of them rotting away in some trees near me as well. Quite the sights
The grand trunk ran a block away from my house. It's a walking trail now know as "the west bloomfield trail, airline trail, Clinton River trail, etc". Now I live in pontiac and there's a ton of abandoned CN lines that used to go to GM plants and such that a lot of locals ride dirtbikes on. Super cool to see how even though the tracks are gone, there's still tons of paths and remnants
Move over to the siding, "Soul Train". Here comes "Grand Funk Western" highballing in over the airwaves, with non-stop express service linking Chicago and Motown!
The band was named after the actual railroad, similar to how the band ‘Chicago’ (originally’The Big Thing’) was previously called ‘Chicago Transit Authority’ until the city made them stop.
I can vaguely recall one day being at the throttle of what was probably an EMD SW1500 GT switcher in the GT Elsdon Yard at 55th and Central Park in Chicago around 1965. Mind you, I was all of 5-6 years old at the time, and sitting in the lap of the engineer! I was fortunate that my father had a friend who worked for GT (Harry) who got us aboard for the ride! 😊
I grew up in Port Huron in the 1950's and 60's and well remember the Grand Trunk and the large station that used to be there. Now it's just a barren landscape with two tracks.
That is another interesting idea. A super dark horse would have been if the GTW bought the Chicago Great Western, which would also have given routes between Chicago, Omaha, the Twin Cities, and Kansas City, although not all to way to Texas as the Rock Island would have.
There must be something with taxes keeping the old companies around. I believe the CN ET44AC's builder plates say they are owned by Wisconsin Central. Must be some sort of loophole

Back in the early 1990s when I was at Heidelberg College (now University) in Tiffin, Ohio, there used to be a freight that would come through at night with all GT power on it, heading to Fostoria to turn north towards Toledo. Even if I wasn't trackside waiting to see the Broadway go through and catching the GT train in the process, I could always tell if it was going through town due to the distinctive horns on the GT locomotives.
In early 70’s we used to ride bikes to Nolan yard(7 mile and Outer Drive in Detroit) Mt Clemens Sub. and watch the Alco switcher all day. My neighbor worked for GT took us kids on a Saturday to ride on Alco switcher in Hamtramck yard
In my family, we stan the Grand Trunk Western. 5 generations have worked for “The Trunk”, starting with my triple great grandfather on the Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee and most recently with my late grandfather, who was the last one to retire in 1995
I grew up next to the CN mainline north of Toronto and I'd occasionally see GT or CV wagons and locomotives pass by. They were a curiosity because the they had an uncanny resemblance to the 'normal' CN style, but with different letters.
The shortline railroads that were sold off were the former Central Vermont was sold to New England Central Railroad in 1995 and the line to Portland, Maine was sold to St. Lawrence and Atlantic. The St. Lawrence and Atlantic's east-west mainline is nicknamed "the Grand Trunk Eastern". Through the Central Vermont, the Grand Trunk reached New London, Connecticut. Most of the former DT&I was sold to Indiana & Ohio Railway in 1997.
