There was nothing ever inherently wrong with the family guy formula, but at some point, evolution of their comedy became necessary. Unfortunately for the creators and viewers, I think the family guy style of humor is not something easily built upon. You can try to strengthen storylines and create more meaningful moments all you want but at the end of the day you're still relying on a very inflexible approach to their humor

It was. And stiff leg Republicans didn't like it, although I'm republican now. But Bart being that way only lasted a few years because the show pivoted as they say today. Homer's personality changed a little and he became more of a main character. And the writing was marvelous. That was until that principle skinner episode in the fall of '97. That was the first Crack. I watched it weekly until maybe '05. By then it was more bad than good.

I feel like Family Guy has faded in quality because it just made every character so unlikable. In the early seasons, Peter was an idiot. But he wasn't malicious. Lois was kind of flat. But she wasn't so easy to hate. But in later seasons, it's like every character has lost any redeeming values they once had. It's not like It's Always Sunny, which never attempted to make their characters likable in the first place. At least the Simpsons try to maintain a balancing act between their characters being likable and being a jerk. But Family Guy just doesn't seem to be trying anymore and it really shows.

The cutaways are less obtrusive, the jokes didn't feel crass or lowest-common-denominator. Family Guy is just shock value for the sake of shock value South park uses profanity and vulgarity to make a point
I know plenty of people who love South park who find Family Guy to be just vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity
The first three seasons of Family Guy are gold I won't deny that but after they brought back Family Guy after it was canceled the tone changed and it just wasn't nearly as funny as it was when it started and nowadays if I see a clip of an episode that looks interesting I will seek it out but it's not a must-watch show like it was when it first started
South park on the other hand never fell off I think that the fact that they don't just use vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity in addition to the fact that South park only takes a week to make an episode so they're able to keep it super topical and fresh also helps the show quite a bit compared to say Family Guy

I think another major factor in why Family Guy is hated is also it’s lack of constancy. Particularly, when it comes to its characters. The characters in family guy flip flop in personality all the time depending on what jokes or stories the writers want to do. One minute, Peter is the archetype sitcom dad who’s bumbling and incompetent, but has a good heart and cares about his family, the next he’s basically a remorseless jerk who doesn’t care for his friends or even his own family. Brian griffin is sometimes the voice of reason straight man to everyone’s insanity one moment and then the next he’s a pretentious, self satisfied jerk. Lois is a caring mom and level head to Peter’s shenanigans, the next she’s a lustful, violent and petty woman who’s abusive to her children. And I don’t even think the writers ever bothered to give Chris a personality outside of being a dumb, naïve teenager. In any great comedy, especially situational comedy, the humour should start with the characters themselves and how they would react in a situation. If the characters are just being used as empty shells for the writers to reel what ever jokes they want regardless of which characters is telling them, that’s just bad comedy writing.

Going off what you said about the characters just being there to say a joke for the sake of comedy I agree and notice it’s a lot more present in the modern episodes when they try to be relatable to the audience and force out cutaways that go on for far too long. It sometimes feels like filler to me and it’s just there just to keep the runtime going. It also doesn’t help when the characters say exactly what they’re going to do and cutaway to exactly what they just said or they proceed to do said action right then and there. But that’s just how I feel about that it’s very noticeable compared to the earlier Family Guy Episodes

I've loved Family Guy for 20 years and it's a perfect show to forget about your day, turn your brain off for 20 mins, smile, and laugh. I've never once thought, "hmm I wish Peter would be a better dad, or husband."
If I want that stuff I go to drama's or anime for character development and good storytelling.
I don't watch GoT, HOTD, or Better Call Saul for there jokes. So why would I watch an edgy comedy for character development and good storytelling?

@@Marcus616Family Guy has entertainment quality. Just not on the traditional "character development" way.
I see that the movies and TV shows that are more commonly considered to be the best ones by the 'internet critics' are usually because they have the most deep characters, that have the most touching atmospheres, etc. Personally, I never even cared about this and I don't consider those to be key factors for a TV show or movie's quality. If they were mere books, then those aspects would certainly be much more necessary. But the audiovisual technology allows for other aspects to be just as entertaining to consume.
Family Guy has no need to present a logical development of its world. And that's part of its humor. There are episodes where Griffin family members die and are alive on the next scene. There are episodes that end with permanent or irreversible consequences, but they are just gone on all the other episodes. You don't need to care about all of this. Family Guy is a show where you sit and watch open-mindedly to enjoy its random jokes just because they make sense. It's like when you create a joke that has absolutely no relation with your current social context, but you still tell it because it works. People usually call them "bad jokes", but they work and are funny to you regardless. Family Guy might be too random and have no development on its writing, but it's probably the funniest show I ever seen and ever will see in my life. I just let myself enjoy how they make really cool jokes out of well-thought contexts, without thinking "wow, this is bad because this cutaway has nothing to do with the episode's plot". This is bullshit. Family Guy works with more than just the strict plot's jokes and that's awesome.
And I also don't consider Family Guy to be "brain dead". It's not like those TV shows where there are only fart jokes, or only sex jokes, or only dark humor. Family Guy really knows how to create a totally different situation and totally different jokes on every episode, even if they have a certain formula that they repeat. Whenever I felt I was seeing something that I seen before in another episode, those were always positive things that I always like to see in episodes. I never feel like I'm seeing the same thing when I watch Family Guy.

    • @ramissespedro2606

I saw some people complaining about the voice acting. I'm a brazilian, so I watch it on brazilian portuguese. I can see how the english voice acting feels a bit more natural, but also more forced and less cartoon-ish. The brazilian voice acting for Family Guy works so incredibly well and makes the jokes feel even better to appreciate. Peter's voice is literally the same as Spongebob's Mr. Krabs (same voice actor), rather than a stereotypical overweight man's voice.
I think that the brazilian voice acting for Family Guy works because they hired quality voice actors to say the super stupid lines of the show, so, instead of looking forced like Seth MacFarlane's voices, they are all normal voice actors saying really stupid shit.

I don't think it can be underestimated how much Family Guy changed after its revival (with that change increasing over time). It's basically unrecognisable now. As well as being more character-focussed and less reliant on stereotypes (see early Joe, Mort and Cleveland), it used a lot less cut-away gags, and those it did use were usually clever ones, messing with audience expectations. Eg. Peter talking about the time he hit a deer with his car, cut to him having rear-ended a driver who was a talking deer. It also had a lot more absurdism that WASN'T cut-away gags. To me, that's what set it apart from The Simpsons. Jokes like Joe's trampoline not working due to a power cut, or Peter trying to distract an angry mob by pointing off-screen and shouting "Erm... look over there! It's Bigfoot". Pan to Bigfoot saying "Hey, this isn't about me". Whether you find them funny or not (and you probably don't based on my written versions of them), it's undeniable that this is a style of humour that The Simpsons can't really do outside of Halloween specials. Same with KotH and Bob's Burgers. It made Family Guy unique.
Then the show came back, and it was crasser, relied more on offensive stereotypes, had more cut-aways that were less plot-relevant or clever, and the absurdism mostly drifted away outside of 'lol random'.
Basically I feel they're two different shows, with a few seasons in between (4 to maybe 6 or 7) that straddle both styles.

i’ll always respect seth macfarlane as a creator because you cannot deny his talent as a voice actor, writer, and even a vocalist. despite family guy starting off as almost a simpson’s knockoff may have stunted it, but once it came into its own, i think was when it really started to shine. the cutaways were what made it different than simpsons, it had this air of randomness and that gave it charm. but over the years it became so big that eventually it realized it was set for life. the show didn’t need to be innovative, funny, or new anymore. and it began to devolve until eventually it became what it was today- a show where everyone in it is a psychopath and evil and the jokes are much less funny and the cutaways are just random for the sake of being random, they don’t have the same charm as they used to. they used to be more complex jokes, more than just “this is worse than that one time that something wacky and bad happened” or “this is more crazy than when this crazy thing happened”. they used to be more complex jokes with better references. now it’s just “this is formula, we do it cause we have to and we put no effort into it” i’ve always found it ironic that the show’s intro talks about good old family values, and at the beginning of the show’s run, this was a clear joke. like peter and lois cared about their kids more than they seem to now, but it was funny then cause there were the occasional things happening that made that statement ironic. now it’s still ironic, but it’s not funny anymore because that’s 100% what you expect from the show. you know all the characters hate eachother and fight constantly or they just argue or insult eachother. it’s rare in modern family guy to see anyone show actual GENUINE affection towards eachother. most of the affection you see is on the same level as brian going after some new girl with scummy tactics all cause he wants to get laid. it’s known that he doesn’t actually care about anyone he dates. and there’s rarely a vulnerable moment or a moment of connection. and obviously family guy is meant to just be a surface level pastime show but still. to have characters JUST be assholes all the time can be exhausting. sometimes positivity can be funny too, like all the old gags that peter and his friends would get into while drunk.
i don’t think it’s shocking that american dad is doing better than family guy in terms of its writing and whatnot. family guy got canceled, and when it did, it was pretty much just a simpsons alternative. and american dad was born, and it seems to me that seth and everyone on the show actually has more of an emotional attachment to these characters and they care about not flanderizing them.
i think overall, family guy is whatever and it’s gonna continue to be whatever. it’s trash tv, it’s not very funny, but it’s something to do to pass the time. that’s probably why it’s the king of tiktok right now. they say the subway surfers beneath the video is what’s keeping your attention span, because family guy is so lacking in substance that it’s kinda hard to watch without something keeping your attention. and funny enough, that’s what the modern cutaway gags are for. that’s what keeps your attention, because family guy is just SO average.

I think an issue with Family Guy became that it appeared like they couldn't find their identity or forgot it. It's weird just how different seasons 1-3 is compared to like season 10. Gags are fine for FG. It's something the show has always had, but there came a point where it was way more random and out of place than ever. Old FG cutaway gags fit into the story and whatever the conversation was about. New FG just started doing overly random stuff that just didn't fit well. Some cutaways lasting almost 2mins.
The other issue is that FG made every character insufferable in some way. Making them terrible people but also trying to get you to feel bad for them at the end of every episode. They made Brian completely unlikeable and then had the episode where Quagmire goes after him with a speech which felt weird to listen to because Quagmire is a rapist lol. Listening to Quagmire have this holier than thou attitude towards Brian was weird considering who is character is. You have Quagmire the perverted rapist, Brian the douchebag atheist bad father, Lois that started caring less about her kids and husband, same thing for Peter. All of the characters turned negative. Seahorse Seashell Party is one of their worst episodes because of the piss poor message about Meg standing up for herself and how she needs to take the abuse to keep the family dynamic going. Idk who wrote that episode, but that was such a lowball message to give. Screams Of Silence is also another. Lois making fun of that woman in person and laughing at her. That killed the character for me. Also same thing with Brian Is A Bad Father. It's like the writers couldn't help themselves when writing shittiness onto these characters.
I understand shock value, but at points FG really went overboard and just started killing any likeability their characters had. Even in South Park you don't see them turning all of their characters into horrible people doing horrible things to people. Theres still a balance. FG used to have that balance. Brian was way more likeable in the early seasons. Meg had hobbies and was treated normally but a little nerdy at school. They went from that to having Meg agree with needing to take family abuse for the betterment of the family. That really tuned me out from the show. And you had Lois running over Stewie and then trying to hide it like early Lois would've ever done that.

I was obsessed with Family Guy growing up, but season 7 is where I started to fall off.
And well, I think it's because of the reasons you mentioned in this video.
I started to see what the critics were talking about. How the show was edgy and shocking for its own sake, but not really having a point behind it (though the few times they did try, those episodes kinda sucked).
Mind you, I was a teen back when I watched Family Guy, and watching something that was willing to be edgy was all I needed to like it. Though nowadays, I like my comedy to have some kind of a point. Not to mention shock value diminishes over time, because life happens.
I'd also say it's due to the characters just becoming unlikable over time; just so they could try to be more shocking, I suppose.
Sure, Peter was a dimwit, but in earlier seasons, he still loved his family at the end of the day. Nowadays, I have to wonder how the man still even has a family, and hasn't died from sheer stupidity.

You can tell cause while Seasons 4-5 ramped up the dark/shock humor, there was still an effort to keep some heart & charm in the show. After they left it started to fade away, and by Season 7 that core was no longer there.

the Simpsons just got to Old and redundant
FG is for the most part pretty consistently very funny
And SP was almost always our gold for a very long time, they used the same formula of resetting each week to begin a new story (except for the occasional 2 or 3 partners) they used it successfully for so long but the past 5 or so seasons have gone against every that made it great for so long by tying each episode and seasons into each other, and even far worse thire whole sense of humor has changed, now it's like they make some stupid point in the first 2 min of the episode and then beat it ino the ground for next 20 mins usually using endless, annoying and straight up lame ass puns over and over
I have been watching SP since I was 8 yrs old in 1997 and have long considered myself part of the be SP generation, I never thought I would say this but the past 5 or so seasons of SP are just literally unwatchable it's just terrible, south Park has jumped the shark 🦈 big time (Also Sunny has pretty much been consistently killing it forever now).... • @ivanbluecool

Honestly like the Simpsons it lacks any reason to really exist and the jokes are just flat being shock humor and cut away gags that just take up time.
American dad. King of the hill and bob's burgers knows how to keep a plot better grounded so when something is shocking you feel the impact more as it's not just a Gag and things return to normal afterwards.
Plus American dad knows how to use thier punching bag better in Claus as he actually gets wins a few times to make it more than just a meg situation as well as tell fun storylines that give each of the cast either something to do or go to new places. The cast shrunk but that didn't stop it from being fun like the Christmas episodes or adding rogu and Jeff to the main cast which look at family guy failing at Vinny
Also it ages horribly as family guy wants to play real world political messages like the Simpsons especially in 2016 to 2020 and people say that lame excuse "it's just a cartoon" when the message sucks and "it's really telling a message" when it aligns with thier own beliefs. Basically flat and not able to be a good thing either.

1)Family Guys is a show I love and a show I love to hate.
2)If I were to be an executive at Fox, I'll be the guy who'll be known and take the bullet for being the one to cancel Family Guy. Imma put it out like ol' yeller.

Good analogy. I used to like Family Guy but I just straight up hate it and have completely disowned FG. They did this to themselves, making people hate their show.

Problem is, no one person gets to decide to just pull the plug on any show on any network. It’s just one of those shows, like The Simpsons and AFHV that are going to stick around forever regardless.

I can't like The Simpsons anymore either, Grimes. I choose to watch the more underrated Futurama instead. At least the latter is not showing off as much and I've been following Futurama since day one. I will always cherish the memories of the good times we had.

honestly, Terifteriq videos on Family guy really changed my opinion on the show itself. his analysis really helped me to be more forgiven of Family Guy.
I still think the show is lazy, and the way they constantly punch down topics and groups, without making a single relevant point on it, and even make jokes that are, impossible to laugh for how upsetting they are, really make my blood boil with anger.
but is not as bad as many say it is. when Family guy does it right, they fucking do it right. and Seth is an amazing creator and he does look like a sweetheart.

Family Guy pre cancellation was actually really funny and had character development as well to the point that between the second and third season they really hit their stride. After Family Guy was cancelled, all the focus went to American Dad and I feel that the surprise reinstatement caused resources to be split between both shows and American Dad took priority because it was newer whereas Family Guy already had an established fan base at that point. It's a shame because you could tell after a certain point they were really phoning it in. Most series can't keep pulling it together after being canceled and bounced around like Futurama.
