My daughter has Autism and was nonverbal until the age of 6. Sign language really helped her communicate her needs and wants. She’s now fully oral and is multilingual. I myself, just became deaf on one side last year from an accident. I’m also a special needs school bus driver and sign language is a huge beneficial part of my life, and work. Thank you Sign Duo for spreading positivity and awareness.
Tal- I pray that everything with you has been successful and brought you joy. Best of luck to all of you 🤟🏾 #PositiveVibes

I am a hearing person who started learning sign language for a deaf friend at work and then 3 months later started going to deaf parties, concerts and church services. I never would have thought in 9 months I could have a full conversation without an interpreter but I can. I have fallen in love with deaf culture, but a year ago I didn't know there was such a thing as deaf culture. I love watching you guys and I appreciate the videos and picking up new signs. Thanks!

Hi there! I'm on my boyfriend's account but I just wanted to comment that I love watching your vlogs. I work with Deafblind people and it is always so interesting to see different signs from different countries! I work in Australia so we have Auslan (Australian Sign language). I'm still learning but hopefully I can become more fluent one day. Thanks for your videos, looking forward to watching more of them :) Love from Jen in Australia.

This made me cry! I know absolutely nothing about sign language and I have NO idea how deaf people live, but you guys are so amazing, you are brave enough to show this to the world and let us understand! And I wish this wouldn't be taken for granted and there would be more understanding and acceptance! Thank you so much!

I think you’re right about having hearing and deaf people living together it’s an awesome thing. I watch youre show and I’m not deaf and I don’t sign but I enjoy every minute of it and I think we should all be inclusive and educated in your community. I am a nurse and I think because of your show I’m going to start taking up some signing for patients who come into my unit who are deaf. I think the more we know the more we grow. keep doing what you’re doing 👏

Wow I love your guys videos. As a hard of hearing person who has only hearing friends. Its great to learn more signs. ( I've been taking ASL in college but I've taken all the ASL courses that my university offers) Since I Don't have any deaf or hard of hearing friends who sign. Its great to have channels like yours so I can continue to learn about signing and deaf culture. SO THANKFUL FOR YOUR CHANNEL

I think this is great what you guys are doing. I enjoy your vlogs immensely. As a 45 year old hard of hearing (90% hearing loss). I've never accepted my hearing loss or come to terms with it. I don't even sign. I can hear enough to get by. I always felt 'trapped' between two worlds (hearing & deaf/hard of hearing). Your vlogs have brought up allot of interesting perspectives on the issue and struggles. Thanks!

I work for a grocery store and when i 1st started there was a deaf bagger. I always wanted to be able to communicate with him. Eastern Kentucky University is where I took my sign language courses (while I was in high school) and they were always proposing to us that we should live in the deaf/hearing floor. it's was super cool to know that EKU did that. I was still in high school so I couldn't live there, but I still hung out in the sign lab with the Deaf students and professors all the time ♡

I accidentally ran across your videos on RUclips decided to go back and start from the beginning. I really enjoy watching your videos… And also the fact that you mentioned in one of the earlier ones, the differences between ASL learned from books and ASL used by the deaf. The differences when it comes to learning ASL. It's not like a direct translation such as the spoken language was Spanish or French to me ASL was like learning phrases or learning to speak in phrases depending on what was going on. Things have different meaning depending on the context of the conversation. At least that's how I thought of it. I'm 39 now but when I was probably about 15. I spent some time at this vocational rehabilitation center in West Virginia where they helped people with physical disabilities learn to drive, work on cars job skills things like that the majority of the students there though were. deaf or hard of hearing individuals. Who had aged out of their particular school systems. I guess you would say. I'm glad to see that you are so open about educating the hearing, the majority of students are dealt with at the time were not most of them had their own little thing going and for whatever reason were not very welcoming to hearing individuals. (Unless they wanted us to run to the nearest convenience store to play interpreter…) While I was there I chose to try and learn sign language from books at first. As they were in charge of major things like most of the cafeteria staff was deaf and the way the cafeterias was set up. It made ordering food at pain in the ass if you didn't have some rudimentary knowledge of sign language which I eventually tried to learn through books at first. I taught myself to finger spell… Very tedious… I LOL but at least I managed to get a chocolate milk and Mountain Dew not chocolate milk in my Mountain Dew. :-) Then I met my friend Ila. She was a deaf student there a lot like you she didn't mind educating people and she made it her mission to teach me to sign. Or as she put it, "learn how to speak properly." She got frustrated from with me from time to time, mainly because I have cerebral palsy, which makes some signs rather difficult. But she got to where she wouldn't acknowledge anything I was trying to communicate. If I was solely finger spelling. And I have to agree the opportunity to be around people using sign language in everyday conversation made it a lot easier to learn than just trying to copy things from the book. I know it was very hard for me. At first because always felt embarrassed or that I was to make some sort of mistake and people did laugh at me a lot. While some people… But Ila she would always just shove me and move on... She could read lips pretty well, which helped her teach me, but after a while she would refuse to acknowledge anything I signed it pretty soon I was staying at that particular place, it became like second nature to I guess constantly do what you referred to as Sim Com I caught myself doing it without thinking about it, even when I wasn't with Ila or any other deaf or hard of hearing individual. Though it did have its uses in the bars if there happened to be another person who could understand with me. :-) Over the years, though I have not had occasion to use sign so I had forgotten most of what I picked up. Because if you don't continually use something like that you forget it, at least on a certain level. However, I have noticed myself reading the caption less and less last as I watched your videos. So I do agree that deaf and hearing co-mingling together is the absolute best way to learn sign language. Especially if you're looking to understand the deaf community. Thank you for your videos...

Hi Betty. Thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I can not tell you how much what you says means to me. I definitely understand that sometimes it is hard to be accepted in the Deaf community or find someone who is willing to patiently help you learn. That's why Ryan and I created this channel. We want everyone to see the wonderful things that can come out of patience and kindness. You're friend, Ila, who treated you with such kindness is such an amazing story. No matter, Deaf or Hearing, or if you're learning from a book or online, everyone and anyone who wants to learn deserves to be treated with patience and kindness. I'm really happy that you found our videos, and they can jog your memory of some sign language. Never hesitate to reach out to me. Just say, "it's Betty. Remember chocolate milk and Mountain Dew, not chocolate milk in my Mountain Dew. " LOl that's funny

hi! you guys are so cute and i love watching you (i've been wanting to say this through many videos, but this one had the message that fits) So basically, i am fully deaf in one ear but fully hearing in the other, this has given me the ability to speak "normally" and be mainstreamed, however, being deaf came from sickness so I'm the only young deaf person in the family (my dad has lost his hearing with age but he's not going to learn sign language so like???) anyways, I'm really glad that through you and other deaf youtubers, I can pick up (mostly) ASL and notice the different nuances. I think that rooming or being in close contact consistently with a person whose main mode of communication is sign language would be the best thing because it helps everyone out that tries it.
anyways i love your content (and sorry my first comment is on a 5 month old video)

I have a question for Ryan.... Hi, I'm Owen. I am currently taking ASL 2 at my school, and am starting to interact and meet with deaf people. I've been going to deaf meets, and practicing. Someday I want to be an interpreter. So my question to you is, when going out to eat with someone hearing, would you prefer to order your food yourself or have the order be interpreted? Just curious. Love your videos by the way!

great idea about deaf and hearing dorm.
i think it would need to go beyond the dorm though and include teaching staff and adminstration workers etc. to also participate in the initiative.
I like the idea because ive been using apps to learn auslan and its impossible to teach myself to sign as no one corrects me and i cant actually carry on a conversation with myself and an app.

Constructive note: Ryan has you shut out the music playing and just sign - totally fine. But OMG I hate the jingly jangly RUclips jingle that substituted it. I also learned this in a previous video and have just been muting your videos since the channel is by nature welcome to that lol. That’s why I don’t mind it, it adds to the experience to just mute the video.

Could hear you just fine and for a hearing person I rather you speak and sign so that I can watch your hands while listening to what you're saying.

Hold up is tax added after in America or is it included in the price like in England

it is charged after the order is made. So if a cheeseburger is $5, tax is added to that to make it 8.00. Hopefully that makes sense!

I'm really curious whether or not this program exists at any other school... if so, I definitely want to look into it! Anyone in the comments live in a deaf-hearing dorm at college?

Ellen, you shouldn't wash your hands in the kitchen sink after you touch or handle dogs or their waste.

    You get money for recycling??

    • @emilywestlund4527
      @emilywestlund4527 6 лет назад

Katie Several states have it where you get charged a fee when you buy something in a can or bottle, like soda, bottled water, etc, and if you bring it to a center you can get some of that fee back. You don’t get anywhere near all of it back though, so you don’t really get paid to recycle, you just get some of the fee back that you already were charged.

roxodee Several states have it where you can get money back if you bring in bottles and cans, but there’s a charge when you buy those things and you don’t get nearly as much back as you pay in the fee when you buy it. So you don’t really get paid to recycle, you just can get a little bit of that fee back.
