    Justine knew what she was doing and who she was gonna hand Ember over to before Lucy Did!😂 Justine is counting on Lucy's abilities and now Ember is too! C'mon Lucy! I remember how flat embers eyes looked after Justine first got him. He looked quite depressed. He is thriving now!

      Suzanne, you took the words right out of my mouth. He was, indeed, rather depressed a few months ago. He is enjoying his new life tremendously. Although he was a bit of a naughty boy, he will have gained confidence from this hunter trial. He's still only learning.

    You can see Ember having changes in thought from positive to negative from his ears on the go pro. Ross Jacobs is an Australian horse trainer and he talks of horses acting out the main thought in their head at the time until it is replaced with another one, that should be the one you want i.e. feet forward which to the horse is then the better choice. As you say he is buddy sour and there could be groundwork that could help him, interrupting the negative thought. When he naps you stop riding, disengage his hindquarters on a tight circle, make it uncomfortable, make him work, until he asks to stop and then ask him to go forward calmly. You are brave and determined and have good people around you to support you. Best wishes

      Make the direction he wants to go lots and lots of hard work(collection and lateral work) Then turn him away back the direction you want to go and take all the energy out of it. He will learn it's easier to go the way you want. Sit up and use your legs to stear, soften your elbows. Also, laugh😊.
      Saddle Pads...I put wooden rods between the rafters of my tackroom and used hangers for pants to hang them up behind my door.

    Seems like a confidence thing to me, look at him go once he realised he can do it!! 😂. My first charity ride on my dude blew his mind 🤯 he is usually a chilled out dude but not this day, so much going on lol. Your dude is still learning and to me his napping seems like he needs that reassurance from you at times. I find some ex racers to be sensitive souls that need our confidence more than most breeds. The right trainer, the right rider (you!) He will be a superstar in time ✨️

    hi lucy i had a horse just like ember nappy wise. what was a game changer for me was loads of ground work i long reined at shows took her there for the atmosphere and long reined then lunged round the show ground did lots of two rein lungeing so i could really drive her forward from the ground it helped me loads also, i did loads of rideing and leading . leading the nappy horse tack her up and then lead her round also cantering them both really thinking forward. i lunged jumped to it really helped me massively tack them up so they think rideing and then fom the ground drive forward your able to see the negative thought comeing and able to act quicker to change there thought to forward with the feet. your doing amazeing with ember i hope this might help you in some way as it can be really frustrating at times. it does get better though hang in there. only trying to help.

    My mare is exactly the same the kindest tb. Extravagant movement. I call it going into shutdown. She got thru it but every time I bring her back into work. Im lucky to get a few minutes in before she halts. Just flexing her when in halt. Plenty of patting n rubs. And she'll go forward again. Breaks her thoughts. Takes a few minutes. But kindness is the only way.

    My Ottb also would not take any notice of the other horse when trying to get a lead. Some of the race people at the start gate will turn the horse left and then right in succession to move their feet and I found that helped with napping as well. Just pull left then right then left, etc just to get a step or two. This would help just change the subject in his head. Napping is so frustrating. It is so very good to see you out again. I always love your vlogs and your fun sense of life. Love the bags. So smart!! Thanks for sharing!!

    My OTTB mare went through a "stopping" phase as well for pretty much the first year I had her. She would do it when I would not ride my best and demanded perfection (I don't blame her LOL), but it's definitely frustrating. She eventually worked out of it once she got fully comfortable barefoot and having consistent riding. I don't think these are Ember's reasons for stopping/napping, but just wanted to let you know you're not alone in your struggles ❤ Just keep at it. You both are a great team, just going through a rough patch right now.

    Have you tried sitting on him like a jockey ? May be he is confused because when jockeys sit down like we do when we normal people ride it means usually stop or walk for the racehorse. My OTTB won’t even move at the walk unless everything is precisely as he is accustomed to

  • @Squimbelina
    @Squimbelina Год назад +2

    He was not impressed having Cloud following him was he? Ears firmly back until he got out in front on his own. Feels like it must be connected to his racing days - he doesn't like going away from home/the collecting ring full of horses (and he'd always have gone everywhere with company when racing, and raced in a group obviously) but then the actual galloping and jumping definitely seemed to bring out the racing competitiveness. He had a definite Opinion with a capital 'O' on that one.
    I never had planting issues with my OTTB (ours were refusing to walk or be still issues instead - sideways jogging with head flinging up and down like a metronome!) so no useful advice, just solidarity!

The warm up was busy and with everyone circling it's a little like some starts in racing where the horses walk round in a circle until the starter calls them to the line to start. Oh gosh I rode an nappy Arabian gelding for awhile when I was young. So annoying. Either full blast or full stop. Every time I would need someone to take a rein like that I would yell "attitude adjustment". He only ever stopped like that with me, his issue was just a lack of respect for me.

    • @sihnpax6220
      @sihnpax6220 Год назад

      His issue was probably pain or overwhelm. Horses don't understand the concept of respect, that is a human ideal. If a horse says no they have reached over their threshold of stimulation.

    • @Squimbelina
      @Squimbelina Год назад

      Personally, I don't like whips even as 'reinforcing aids' - if the horse isn't listening to your aid, shouting it louder isn't the answer. The only time I use whips is as an extra arm on young horses - I'll hack out with a dressage whip so I can hold it along their quarters to stop them turning their haunches into a car on the road for example.
