You are doing a great job, OTTB’s have lots of stuff to work through and you two are working through a lot. You have great patience and good friends, your videos are always so fun!!!
Seems like a confidence thing to me, look at him go once he realised he can do it!! 😂. My first charity ride on my dude blew his mind 🤯 he is usually a chilled out dude but not this day, so much going on lol. Your dude is still learning and to me his napping seems like he needs that reassurance from you at times. I find some ex racers to be sensitive souls that need our confidence more than most breeds. The right trainer, the right rider (you!) He will be a superstar in time ✨️
Justine knew what she was doing and who she was gonna hand Ember over to before Lucy Did!😂 Justine is counting on Lucy's abilities and now Ember is too! C'mon Lucy! I remember how flat embers eyes looked after Justine first got him. He looked quite depressed. He is thriving now!
Suzanne, you took the words right out of my mouth. He was, indeed, rather depressed a few months ago. He is enjoying his new life tremendously. Although he was a bit of a naughty boy, he will have gained confidence from this hunter trial. He's still only learning.
You can see Ember having changes in thought from positive to negative from his ears on the go pro. Ross Jacobs is an Australian horse trainer and he talks of horses acting out the main thought in their head at the time until it is replaced with another one, that should be the one you want i.e. feet forward which to the horse is then the better choice. As you say he is buddy sour and there could be groundwork that could help him, interrupting the negative thought. When he naps you stop riding, disengage his hindquarters on a tight circle, make it uncomfortable, make him work, until he asks to stop and then ask him to go forward calmly. You are brave and determined and have good people around you to support you. Best wishes
Make the direction he wants to go lots and lots of hard work(collection and lateral work) Then turn him away back the direction you want to go and take all the energy out of it. He will learn it's easier to go the way you want. Sit up and use your legs to stear, soften your elbows. Also, laugh😊. Saddle Pads...I put wooden rods between the rafters of my tackroom and used hangers for pants to hang them up behind my door.
Aah man that must be so frustrating; one minute he's flying and then it's like he completely shuts down for no reason. Wish we could get inside their heads sometimes! You did so well to stay so calm and patient with him xx
Thank you for your honesty. I think at times most of us feel it's all on us and doesn't happen to others and it happens to the best of us at times. I think it's so important to share this and raise awareness
Thanks so much for sharing the "lows" as well as the "highs", which are so helpful and reassuring to watch. And well done to both you and Ember, you've brought him SO far!! 🥰🥰
My mare is exactly the same the kindest tb. Extravagant movement. I call it going into shutdown. She got thru it but every time I bring her back into work. Im lucky to get a few minutes in before she halts. Just flexing her when in halt. Plenty of patting n rubs. And she'll go forward again. Breaks her thoughts. Takes a few minutes. But kindness is the only way.
hi lucy i had a horse just like ember nappy wise. what was a game changer for me was loads of ground work i long reined at shows took her there for the atmosphere and long reined then lunged round the show ground did lots of two rein lungeing so i could really drive her forward from the ground it helped me loads also, i did loads of rideing and leading . leading the nappy horse tack her up and then lead her round also cantering them both really thinking forward. i lunged jumped to it really helped me massively tack them up so they think rideing and then fom the ground drive forward your able to see the negative thought comeing and able to act quicker to change there thought to forward with the feet. your doing amazeing with ember i hope this might help you in some way as it can be really frustrating at times. it does get better though hang in there. only trying to help.
Ember is interesting for sure! The things he can do with his head and neck are remarkable lol. You are amazing with him. Thank you for sharing, good and bad, I love watching you bring him along. ❤❤
Oh Lucy I feel for you. It all looks so tricky but you are doing an amazing job and you will get there. You are a super rider and have got such good support. Hats off to Tilly who did amazingly well by grabbing your reins and still managing to control hers - I would have tipped off the side trying to do that! 😂
My Ottb also would not take any notice of the other horse when trying to get a lead. Some of the race people at the start gate will turn the horse left and then right in succession to move their feet and I found that helped with napping as well. Just pull left then right then left, etc just to get a step or two. This would help just change the subject in his head. Napping is so frustrating. It is so very good to see you out again. I always love your vlogs and your fun sense of life. Love the bags. So smart!! Thanks for sharing!!
Just 7 is exactly what my horse has beend oing, and its the most frustrating thing in the world because it feels like there is nothing you can do in that situation! I know i need to keep traning and going to these events, but its very difficult to get your head in the right place to keep going! Your success with the napping is whats keeping me going as people rarely share the tough rides, so thank you 😅
I think you're wonderful with him. It's clear to me that he really does not do it on purpose, he just can't. And so it's so great to witness your patience through what must be such a frustrating phase. But I'm sure - once you two get through this, you're gonna fly, fly, FLY!
You are doing so well, you were so kind to him even when it must be really frustrating for you (because he seems to really love it when he gets going!) once you overcome this, which you will, I think you’re going to have a lot of success stories xx
Oh the joys of OTTBs! Mine, aged 21 I might add, still has these mental blocks, but he accelerates backwards rather than planting 😅You are doing so well to persever with him. Others would have given up by now. Your hard work will pay off 🧡
I think you're amazing. You have an amazing relationship with Ember and that just wasn't your day. I love how you supported him the whole way round and didn't show him frustration. You have come so far with him 🧡🦄
I love your and your friend’s determination and helpfulness. I know it probably doesn’t feel great, but you are so impressive riding such a quirky horse. He’s lovely, despite the napping, but once he gets going he’s like, OK let’s GO! Best of luck with it all!! #horsesamiright?
Thanks for sharing the reality! As equestrians there is so much of this in reality which not many people show. Horses have their own minds and quirks and it's about being open and honest and exploring what's going on and what we can do to improve this which I think your doing amazingly! You can only try things to see how it goes. I know the frustration of things not going as you want as I have a nappy one myself!
Your bravery and skill are amazing. Know that you are doing everything right by the horse - and giving him every chance. Just don't forget to mind yourself too.
My OTTB mare went through a "stopping" phase as well for pretty much the first year I had her. She would do it when I would not ride my best and demanded perfection (I don't blame her LOL), but it's definitely frustrating. She eventually worked out of it once she got fully comfortable barefoot and having consistent riding. I don't think these are Ember's reasons for stopping/napping, but just wanted to let you know you're not alone in your struggles ❤ Just keep at it. You both are a great team, just going through a rough patch right now.
Oh well done Lucy! If it was easy to retrain thoroughbreds everyone would do it! I wonder if the xc phase in competition reminds him of racing and I remember you saying his heart wasn’t in that anymore. Good luck you’ve got this 👏
Woohoo!! Loved the vlog and following Ember’s journey…. You have such a good attitude during this tough bit of retraining - inspired me not to get grumpy and cry the next time I hit a tough patch!! 😂 horses right 🙄😅 ❤ xo
Thank you for sharing. My horse can be nappy on hacks. Today he was so so so nappy, even though there was another horse with us. It's so frustrating especially since I have him a couple months now and sometimes it just doesn't seem to get better :( I know it is getting better even though the progress is not always linear. And we still need to build his trust and confidence but still, sometimes (like today) it just really upset me. So seeing I'm not alone lifts my spirits and gives me hope it will get better.
The first thing my mare fresh off the track did was plant. Everywhere. I think it’s a racer thing as they are used to running in a group. She’s now 9 and never plants; keep consistent and you’ll crack it! Well done team ❤
Fair play to you for posting, I had an OTTB for years and found similar frustrations to you, it takes so much time and more importantly patience when working with them!! You do a fabulous job of staying cool and calm while on his back and positive when talking about him. Wishing you the best of luck with him 👏☘️⭐️
You are so brave Lucy - I’m wondering if Ember had the security of fences when she raced before and now she’s bewildered by an open cross country course - hoping you understand what I’m trying to say. I think you’re amazing 🎉🎉
Bless you. I have a mare thay does the exact same thing! It's so upsetting and dishearting! I literally have had to give up competing her. All we do now is hunt. I've done one pairs hunter trial on her successful with no naps. But now she has started napping out hunting. So now I think that's off the cards too :( people say oh circle, kick, whip blah. But they won't even circle. They don't care about the kicking or the whip. When a horse says no its very difficult. I take my hat off to you for keep going out and trying!
One day you'll be having drinks with Tilly and Justine and have a good laugh about "remember when Ember went through his napping phase?" I'm sure you'll get this sorted out and you have lots of excellent support. You are such a brave and amazing rider, some of your head-cam footage looked very scary to me, but I know you are more than capable of handling it. I still love Ember's flicky toes. I also really appreciate you sharing both the ups and downs as it helps so many other people rehabbing quirky off-track Thoroughbreds :) Can someone tell me how old Ember is? Thanks :)
We always have the good and not so good days Lucy. It will be interesting to see if Justine feels something when she rides Ember. You are very good with him he’s come a long way since you got him. Napping is a real pain let’s hope a solution is found then you can have more fun with him.tfs😎🏇😎

Not quite finished watching but I’m sorry you have to explain his behaviour - he’s a perfectly “normal” tb in my experience! They have their quirks but boy are they fab when they know their job! 🥰🥰🧡🧡🧡 … whoohoo! Look at him go!! 😍😍😍
You will get there with him Lucy! Napping horses are so difficult… every Tom dick n Harry jumps on the ‘it’s pain’. They forget that horses do in fact have a brain & a personality! They can say NO! 🤷🏼♀️ I feel you, I’ve got a nappy fizzy pony who shutdown & gets overwhelmed by atmosphere / confidence Well bloody done thanks for posting xxx
Have you tried sitting on him like a jockey ? May be he is confused because when jockeys sit down like we do when we normal people ride it means usually stop or walk for the racehorse. My OTTB won’t even move at the walk unless everything is precisely as he is accustomed to
Thank you for posting Lucy. I also have a nappy pony, if you figure what to do please tell! Does he nap when riding out at home? Well done! Keep going xxxx
Have you tried shadow rolls on his bridle - I’m not up with your eventing rules probably can’t compete with them 🤷♀️ might be worth checking just for the jumping maybe even just for training - my pony was like this for a while turned out it was his feet had to have shoes on turned out anyway hope it gets sorted for youn😊
He was not impressed having Cloud following him was he? Ears firmly back until he got out in front on his own. Feels like it must be connected to his racing days - he doesn't like going away from home/the collecting ring full of horses (and he'd always have gone everywhere with company when racing, and raced in a group obviously) but then the actual galloping and jumping definitely seemed to bring out the racing competitiveness. He had a definite Opinion with a capital 'O' on that one. I never had planting issues with my OTTB (ours were refusing to walk or be still issues instead - sideways jogging with head flinging up and down like a metronome!) so no useful advice, just solidarity!
You can contact Steve Young to assist you. Definitely groundwork and respect schooling with Steve. You may also want to consider a compression mask to calm him amongst crowds of horses. BTW, my ex-broodmare THB has begun napping near the gate where we exit the arena at our yard. She doesn't feel like working for the day. Ember may be feeling the exact way.
What's he nappy at , leaving the others horse , facing away from home or the jumps ? Sorry I have this issue and not sure how he's going to be on a xc feild
You will get there. Ignore all the comments about him being ill and having ulcers, some horses are just nappy. I wouldn't be able to have the patience for it but you know, all horses have their quirks, just like us 😂
Could it be the cars? do dressage judges still beep their horns to signal start? if hes used to cars all his life then one makes that noise he might become focused on them as a threat? maybe, just trying to brainstorm here as to what he 's thinking
How frustrating it's a bit like he doesn't get the jumps being there. The warm up was busy and with everyone circling it's a little like some starts in racing where the horses walk round in a circle until the starter calls them to the line to start. With his head up it's a little easier for him to see further in front, it's a puzzle that is for sure
Oh gosh I rode an nappy Arabian gelding for awhile when I was young. So annoying. Either full blast or full stop. Every time I would need someone to take a rein like that I would yell "attitude adjustment". He only ever stopped like that with me, his issue was just a lack of respect for me.
His issue was probably pain or overwhelm. Horses don't understand the concept of respect, that is a human ideal. If a horse says no they have reached over their threshold of stimulation.
genuinely curious why not ride with a crop (whip) on ember? not to use/abuse but to just reinforce aides. really helps give my horse a mental reinforcement.
Personally, I don't like whips even as 'reinforcing aids' - if the horse isn't listening to your aid, shouting it louder isn't the answer. The only time I use whips is as an extra arm on young horses - I'll hack out with a dressage whip so I can hold it along their quarters to stop them turning their haunches into a car on the road for example.
He is a monkey, you are going to have to learn a Lucy growl to let him know it's not acceptable as he isn't scared or phased by the jumps, pity you hadn't entered the pairs twice to give him more to think about, hate to say it but you may be being too nice to him, well done though for keeping cool xxx

I wouldn't be able to have the patience for it but you know, all horses have their quirks, just like us 😂
Horses say no for a reason. This horse is over threshold and shutting down. It's not brave to keep riding them like this.
The only time I've seen ears pasted to a skull like that were 2 wild mustangs having a discussion! 😄😜 Sorry but wow! 😊
Could it be the cars? do dressage judges still beep their horns to signal start? if hes used to cars all his life then one makes that noise he might become focused on them as a threat? maybe, just trying to brainstorm here as to what he 's thinking
Go back to ground work. Lead drive lead back lead drive. Just get him used to you moving his feet.
What does he do if Tilly rides him? Or Justine? Is it a trust issue?
Mby listen to the horses body language? hes clearly trying to tell you something..... And if you dont listen, he will tell you the hard way...
Exactly this!
@@sihnpax6220 funny how they do in a herd though 😉 it's ok though, I know it's not in vogue to say a horse is smart enough to play up with one person.
What a strange horse. Good luck with him.
genuinely curious why not ride with a crop (whip) on ember? not to use/abuse but to just reinforce aides. really helps give my horse a mental reinforcement.
Personally, I don't like whips even as 'reinforcing aids' - if the horse isn't listening to your aid, shouting it louder isn't the answer. The only time I use whips is as an extra arm on young horses - I'll hack out with a dressage whip so I can hold it along their quarters to stop them turning their haunches into a car on the road for example.
horses always say no for a reason. I dont think its fair to push Ember to do this when he is saying no. Thumbs down.
swearing and growling at him will only get him to respond to you out of fear.
It's either you're very busy or you don't have time to post a video. How long has it been? No wonder you have only have 27K subscribers.
her last post was 4 days before this ????? if you're going to insult someone at least get your facts straight.
Sorry but what a weird comment??? she doesn't work for you??? she has a life outside of YT. And 27K is a lot for a relatively niche subject...

Long lining/reining could be helpful?
