Your absolutely correct, a number of drivers were getting a beep in there ear when the lights are 100th of a second from changing. This timing was unchanged for a long time and the FIA caught on, therefore changed the light timing catching out every driver you saw jumping the start.

He lined up at the back of the grid, however Fisichella then stalled his engine on the grid, forcing the start to be red-flagged. Fisichella had to start from the pitlane, while Montoya reclaimed his grid position.
Number 7 at 1:23 There is a story that some teams had hacked the radio frequency of the starting lights signal and were sending a beep to the drivers a tenth or two before the lights were to go out, giving them nearly perfect starts. FIA somehow found out, but didn’t know which teams were cheating, so they held up the lights from going out so once the beeps were sent out, the cheaters would jump the start. Notice how the cars that jumped the start did so at the same time...
I've heard the story, but never seen anyone provide any evidence to go with it. It's just as likely they were all reacting to Frentzen. Pay attention to Hakkinen on the grid and you'll see that he inched forward a tiny amount a second before Frentzen's move.
If Bridgestone had the problem, would the Michelin teams have allowed the same, or would they just say, it's only 6 cars with problems, no big deal, bring proper tyres next time?

Max Mosely (with advice from Bernie Ecclestone) also refused to let Michelin use modified tires that would've held up that had been flown in the night before. There was literally a plane full of useable Michelin tires sitting on the tarmac at Indianapolis International airport. The head of IMS at that time, Tony George, was so disgusted with both parties that he refused to wave the checkered flag as was traditional. You want to blame somebody, don't blame Michelin, blame Max, Bernie, & Ferrari. Everyone else was willing to bend over backwards to make sure the fans got to see a full-field race. Also, on a side note, the oval track paving at IMS had been resurfaced over the winter. Neither Bridgestone nor Michelin had a chance to test on the new surface.... However, the tire supplier for Indycar at that time had done fairly extensive pre-season testing on the new surface. Who was (and still is) the sole supplier for Indycar? Firestone. Which just happens to be the sister company to Bridgestone....

1991 McLaren MP4 + Ferrari 643 best looking F1 Cars of all time. 2 Monster V12 Engines with 740Ps 13.500 rpm and only 505kg. I love these Cars of the early 90s, one time wrong on the pedal and you are gone. No electrical stuff in there, just raw power.
