I'm a mechanic for a John Deere dealership and we never break down tranny's. It's sad but people will pay for a new one or trade the whole lawnmower. Nice to see someone helping the helpless when it comes to JD..I applaud you sir!!
@@bcdoll01 Looked like the motor had the bigger cylinders, which makes sense. In a hydraulic system, a small cylinder feeding a large one is like a small pulley driving a large one, in both cases it gives mechanical advantage. Another way of looking at it is as a fluid reduction gear.
Excellent tear down and explanation my man. My craftsman uses the same transmission. Says in the manual there is no way to service (change fluids) which bothers me. I have 60 hours on it and will change the 5-50 oil to synthetic now that I know what it is. Good to know parts can be purchased separately in the future from the actual manufacturer vs almost $900 from Sears parts as an entire assembly. This is a great little transmission. Knowing how it works is part of knowing how to care for it and make it last. Thanks again for this insightful video.
This is a real good teaching tool. One note, my motor wedge block was wide side down and the Tuff Torque diagram shows the same with a drawing notation to ensure same. Ensure you note the orientation as you take your transmission apart. I take frequent photos as I disassemble devices rather than trust my memory. The photos have saved my bacon many times.
Always a good plan to take pictures. If you install that wedge upside down the trans will work the opposite way. Forward will be reverse and reverse will be forward. They make these in both operating directions.
I inherited a JD L145 that a neighbor drove into Lake Palestine, mowing while intoxicated. So, I'm COMPLETELY rebuilding it. All my gears are good, I'm just thoroughly cleaning it all out. I used Royal Purple 5w20 in the engine BS 650cc. I'd post pics, but RUclips... Thanks, big bruh.
Great series of videos,Excellent detail. I'm currently at 811 hours on my L130 with the original 30W oil. So far the trans hasn't given me any problems, but since Ive been doing much needed repairs/upgrades to it before the season starts the least I can do is change the trans oil and filter.
I just posted on another video. I have a fix for the JD LT155/166 trans not working. This works on any with the 2 round pumps. Simply remove the round pump blocks and discard the small washer on the bottom. This allows the pump to resume its contact with the main pump block. The pump blocks wear over time. When the washer bottoms out, oil gets by the pump faces. I have 3 years on one with this fix and have done several other models with the round pumps. i switched to 5w-50w full synthetic oil. Enjoy your repair!!!
Bryan I like your detail to attention. I have the trans. out and the spider gears are trashed. Don't see any other damage except the cooling fins are cut off on mine. I did get into trouble trying to remove the drain rubber and trashed it. Hope I can replace it.Also I can't tell if the magnet is in a sort of tray that comes out with it. They, the magnets did their job and may have been why I had this trouble.
Fantastic video and attention to detail. I also like the mention of the wrong oil choice by JD. Rather than sell this primarily NEW tractor, I am going to attempt the repair. Thanks!
Bill Morgan I felt the same way. It was hard to find parts the traditional way through J.D., but once you know where the transmission came from and the right kind of fluid to put in it, you're golden! Great folks to work with.
I mentioned them on my FB page and sent them an E=mail what a pleasure it was doing business with them. I'm back mowing this morning. Thanks for all your help!
Great video, wish I had your skills/tools. My John Deere D140 is in the shop right now for this exact issue. It had around 300 hours on it when it stopped moving. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
That little pin! That's how I knew somebody was tinkering around inside a used k62 I purchased. It was missing! And you can't buy them anymore! Lucky there easy to make.
i bought a john deere la135 rider off of a guy and he thought he would change the oil in the rearend so he jacks it up and unbolts the pan off of the rearend and all the gears and peices fell out im glad you made this video i hope i got ever part with it.
hello good video you are very interresting but have a question : what is the way of the ids valves the big is down or up please ? have rebuilding the same transmision and never goes work i thinks is my valves or the pistons lets gone the pressure . Sorry for my english , i m french and any people show that in french seriously like you its for that what i ask you !!
Nice detailed video, I pulled mine apart today to check for any damage, just one question, their are 2 rods that hold the spring on forward reverse lever, what does the adjustable rod, adjusted from outside of unit, do on forward reverse lever?
I got an L110 tore down to this point thanks to your video. Mine just whines and won't move on any unlevel surface forward or backward. What should I be looking for exactly? My spider gears look wore a little bit but I don't see any sharp or broken teeth. Could a little ware be the issue? Thanks
It's such a nightmare to try an work on a project that somebody else has already opened and incorrectly assembled. Bravo to you for the extra effort to show us all how it goes together. Maybe I missed it. The pump moves oil around, but what does that little electric motor do?
spelunkerd As was said, it's a hydraulic pump and a hydraulic motor. Kind of like a clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder, but rotational rather than cylinders.
Thanks for the wonderful video, I have the same gearbox in our lawn mower, that started making strange noises just before starting up, I broke down the gears and could not find anything, except that behind the two springs (in this video time 13:44) I have got 2 bullets, and lo and behold, the machine is running, but upside down, when I push the pedal forward, it runs backwards, and when I press the pedal back, it runs forward. No ball is shown on your video, do you need a ball in there? Can this also hang together with the direction of rotation? I have no other explanation for that.
Nice clips Brian! Got a question on the K51A tranny: I had to remove the pulley shaft & replace it; however, once replaced & put back together - tractor won’t go into gear & makes grinding sound. Is there any way to fix it w/out taking apart tranny? How do I go about fixing this?
Very informative , have one problem I just replaced my pump and motor unable to find any thing on my problem is forward and reverse are reversed never knew my tractor could do 15 in reverse gonna be a slow forward , not shut on what I did wrong on reassemble?
I have an L120 with less than 300 hours that is also having transmission issues. it jerks on load or turning right or left. I did remove the transmission and changed the oil but did not go as far as you did bc I felt I would not be able to do it. The ol change did not resolve the issue.
I have lost some parts to the IDS valves. I have the springs and valves but not the ball or balls and filter or filters. could you tell me how many balls and filter I need and maybe the link to the parts diagram and parts list so I can order them? thanks, great video
I have a craftsman with a K-46 trans. it had a broken bearing and a motor plate(triangular). I purchased replacements and took the shaft gears out and cleaned the housing. After putting all the parts together again the tractor runs fast in reverse and slow going forward also the neutral does not work (always in drive mode). Any help will be much appreciated.
I bought a JD with the loss of power issuer, the previous owner replaced the pumps and what not... there was still loss of power, i tore apart the transaxle and noticed the washer part #39. Do you know if that was missing if it would cause a loss of power? Motor and pump seem to be in good condition, gears are a little worn, but wash was missing. any thoughts?
my l130 rear end needs rebuild. Transaxle gets warm an it jus stops. I'm assuming the pump or motor is bad but I've got it apart an there's no play in the plungers on the motor or pump side. so the only other thing I can come up with is the center section of the pump an motor is bad. but I can't find the right rebuild kit.
Is there a forum where people discuss the symptoms so we can figure out what parts we need? Obvious gear wearage aside. How do you know if your pump other anything else that is sealed is bad? Its one thing to tear it down then find out which parts you need this could take a while in shipping time. Also one hates to reinstall everything just to find out they did not fix the problem. How can you tell whats exactly wrong?
I run a rental yard and well we had some trouble with our la 135 and his vid help us fix ours now we have a problem. Our forward and reverse is backwards? HAVE ANY IDEAS what would cause this ..cuz all its just a rod contacted to it so how can we fix that I don't understand why they would be backwards
I have an issue with my JD transaxle. Runs forward strong, but won't reverse. Had it apart looking for obvious wear or missing parts. All looked good. Matched with parts diagram. Put it together. Added new oil. Still no reverse. Anyone got ideas?
Got a question for you. I have a John Deere L-120 with auger on it and during this winter i notice when i put my foot on the reverse it goes slow. let's say i am backing up and not even a real incline but it stops so what i do is rock my body and then it might move. If not i go forward a foot or two then reverse and even though it's slow i can make it. Got any ideas.
They're two separate links in the same chain. If the pump or the motor are worn- the symptoms are the same. One harness' power from the belt (pump) the other delivers power to the drive shafts (motor).
Check out this diagram it shows the thrust block with the big end down I can't figure out how to put it on here before I put my bed together I really like to know a lot of most of them I see online on RUclips is showing the skinny in down person with the diagram that I'm seeing showing the big end downsseo.info/tuff-torq-k46-parts-diagram-concept/tuff-torq-k-46-parts-diagram-zoom-impression-picture/

did you consider drilling holes in the case so you could drain the fluid while trans is still on the tractor?
I did, but the stupid purist in me stopped that from happening.
Fantastic video series, Brian. You are such an excellent teacher!

Suggestions?
The IDS valves have tiny little filters in them that should be changed - especially if you had metal in the oil

EXCELLENT video, TNX for the upload!
I tried to hear the name of the company website that had the exploded diagrams but I’m a little slow. Anybody know? Thanks for THE BEST videos.

Hi Brian, can you advise where to get a Filler Cap for my L115 John Deere Hydrostatic Trany, Tuff torq does not have on for K46 which fits
I have a D130. 200 hours. Can I just drain and fill the fluid or should I open it up to change the filter?

Excellent video! Explained so well!. :)
what is the model of the transmission on a d120. There is oil running on the right side of the wheel. is it just a seal?
I have a LA125 and the drivers side axle is leaking fluid around the seal, is it possible to replace just the seal ??
You KnowMe Yes. Of course.
is there any way to just get the pump and motor, my lt155 just went out. its has the tuff torq k51b transmission in it

MrAm1400 That's the early signs of pump/motor wear.
pump motor wear? explain and solution
They're two separate links in the same chain. If the pump or the motor are worn- the symptoms are the same. One harness' power from the belt (pump) the other delivers power to the drive shafts (motor).
Does anyone have the part numbers or what they have named these on the website? I am tying to get the motor and pump.
Could somebody give me the website to where you can order affordable John Deere hydrostatic rear end parts?
John Church
Go direct to Tuff toro web site
thanks for this...
I have problem with mine not much power on reverse or none
Bravo!
JD probably selected the oil for a predictable failure.
Probably two maybe three seasons then in our disposable world, You buy a new mower.
and that will be our down fall. we cant substain it
