Why Guyana, Suriname & Belize Part of the Caribbean?
HTML-код

- Though Guyana, Suriname, and Belize are geographically located in South and Central America respectively, they are all considered to be Caribbean countries. Buy why?
Guyana in South America borders Venezuela, Suriname, and Brazil, and Suriname similarly borders Brazil, Guyana, and French Guiana, a French territory. It is even a more extreme case for Belize, which shares its border with only Mexico and Guatemala, and is surrounded by only Spanish-speaking countries.
So why are these countries often grouped together with the Caribbean? And what makes a region the Caribbean begin to begin with? Let’s now tackle this question.

As a proud woman of 🇸🇷Surinamese 🇸🇷descent, I think this video couldn’t have come at a better time. I have been educating people about this for years!! Thank you for your excellent explanation. Love your videos!!
Suriname is beautiful, with unique culture. But don't get no exposure at all. Surinamese women are beautiful too.
Nice information but still the represatation of the map of Suriname and Guyana is incorrect. As you can see a couple of times he uses the wrong map o. The part on the lower left belongs to Suriname, the well known case of the "Tigri"dispute.
@@bentikpaulus4335 Exactly. Pathetic that these individuals call themselves "PROUD" Surinamese or Venezuelans... 😩
You should be ashamed of yourself calling this a video that couldn't come at a better time. You betray your country by even thinking this stupid video is useful for exposure of your beloved beautiful country. As long as people still use wrong and incorrect information like this fault map, this video is worthless 😡 🤮.
Vamos!
Greetings from your southern neighbour, Brazil 🇧🇷 ! I hope one day to visit Suriname, seems like a great place ^^ I was wondering if you could suggest any surinamese authors to read. I'm really into literature and I would love to read some books from Suriname 😊
Facts to ponder upon, Guyana🇬🇾 was one of four original states (Jamaica🇯🇲, Barbados🇧🇧 and Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹) that founded Caricom 1st Aug.1973 which was established by the English speaking parts of the Caribbean by signing the Treaty Chaguaramas. Belize 🇧🇿 (British Honduras) being English speaking as well joined 1st May 1974 and Suriname 🇸🇷 joined 4th July 1995...Caricom was preceded by CARIFTA May 1st 1968 to May 1st 1974(Caribbean Free Trade Association) these were all English speaking countries which was part of the Commonwealth (British Colonies).
And before that from 1955 to 1962 I think the date is right we had the federation of the West indies. 😂
A lot of don’t that it is one of the original founders
Slight correction....it was CARIFTA first and then it transitioned to CARICOM. In fact, that's how the CARIFTA GAMES came about as a symbol of when they moved on from CARIFTA to CARICOM.
The headquarters for CARICOM is in Guyana as well..
@@RawleToney1 but no one seemed to remember the federation, headed by people like Norman manley, Eric williams, Eric Gary of grenada, grantley Adams of Barbados and I am not sure if Guyana was apart of the federation but I know the premiere Chaddi Jaggan was deeply involved in those days. Carrifester was heavily influenced by Michael Manley because he tried to rekindle what was done by his father 10 15 years before.
Guyana is not a State. It is a Country!

The motto says: "Sub Umbra Florero", meaning "Under the shade I flourish." An important aspect of the history of Belize, as the mahogany industry formed the basis of our economy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
@Carol Perez Actually, I believe our flag's motto wherein it refers to shade, is (yes) alluding to that physical shade of the national tree but, allegorically, to the shade provided by colonialism, under which the colony flourishes...
Sub Umbra Floreo
Under the trees I flourish
@@pullupboyzgta1779 Sorry. Wrong. "Sub Umbra Floreo" is Latin for " Under the Shade I Florish". Belizeans say " we" instead of " I ".
The Brits need to pay to replant those mahogany trees in Belize, too. They left that country a deforested mess. No roads, no infrastructure and no hope to improve being so poor.

As a Guyanese gal...it's simplified for those who don't understand. I always describe Guyana as very much a South American country but historically and culturally Carribbean country. When I was younger up until I was about 12, I thought Guyana was located in the Caribbean sea since we were always taught about it as Caribbean (I'm Vincy). I was SHOOK when I found out it was located in South America. And I just now found out Belize isn't in the Caribbean sea either 🙈
How could any country be in the sea? The word Caribbean has nothing to do with the sea. The word Caribbean comes from the Amerindian tribe called the carib who are located in North of South America, and Colombia.
@@carribgirl007 uhh what? Is this a serious question lol? Anyway Caribs settled on many Caribbean islands and some still exist in St Vincent today. So no, not just South America and Colombia.

This is so true !!! You could not explain this more better....Jamaican🇯🇲 slaves stolen from Ghana were first brought to Surinam🇸🇷 by the British but the dutch and the British slave owners could not work together for some reason and the brithish then took big parts of the slaves first brought to Surinam coming from Ghana and some from Nigeria to Jamaica and left another part in Suriname🇸🇷 with the dutch slave owners separating us even more from eachother . A lot of Jamaican words are still the same as Surinam words....they call the Surinam🇸🇷 language the Creole broken English with lots of Ghanaian and Nigirian words in it with few dutch words. Plus we speak Dutch also even in the Surinam Jungle....for example....in Jamaica they would say..( mi a gu NYAM) for i am going to eat..in Suriname we would say..(mi o go nyan) or (Faya Bun Dem ) fire burns them witch in Surinamese is ( Faya Brun Den) and lots more...and dont let me start about the food similarities, culture and ofcourse the people because we are just familie...people should visit Surinam ,they will be surprised about this hidden part of the Caribbean....in some parts its like you're in Africa because of the slaves that flee in to the rainforest during slavery and kept their African ways and culture etc other parts look like you're in India, or also Indonesië, plus dont forget the native Americans, chinees and few white poeple too..a lot are still pure and also the mixes of all those races combine ,imagine the foods from all those cultures ...you have like 6 or 7 cultures there,.and if you want to see beauty of A rainforest, Surinam is the place to be .anyway,Yes Surinam 🇸🇷 is part of the Caribbean 🇸🇷🇸🇷 nice video 👌
You wrote all of that to prove something false? Stolen? You mean sold and you have no evidence that we were from "Ghana". Our ancestors were ALL over Africa. Ghana wasn't even called Ghana when all of that happened.
@@slimthickaz. uhmm no !! I dont mean sold...like i said stolen ! You dont have evedince that they were sold too do you? And even if a little part was sold who said it was not by fors of guns? And still the biggest part was stolen by fors of wapens ! And even if that small part was sold, that doesnt mean they were sold to be enslaved by the whites, raped, and killed for 400 years and counting...if someone gives his child to someone else to take care of the child because she cant take care of it that doesnt mean the person who adopt the child should abuse. Rape and kill it if it doesnt want to do what they want ...so keep your point ,and ill stick to mine !! I think the continental CARICOM nations are pretty Caribbean based on what I’ve seen. Not to mention the person I wanna married is from Suriname.
gale-row4-ducat it seems the younger generation does not know the history of the interaction between those islands in the Western Caribbean and even other Central American and South American country, I grew up listening to my mother's telling me story after story of people who live in Jamaica that lived in Cuba and people who went to Cuba and other countries so it just seemed like it was just a natural thing didn't know that it seems different to people nowadays. They are prominent people in Jamaican History who are of Cuban parentage are ancestry even such famous people like Mortimore Planner and Rita Marley and other people that I've heard their name just cannot bring them to mine at the moment. The great Haiti an revolutionary was a man taken from Ghana to Jamaica as a slave and escaped to Haiti where he helped to inspire the Haitian revolution his name was duty bookman. I guess because of the political and economical atmosphere of today is what prevent this from happening in 1960 when the country started to get independent Jamaica was wealthier than the other Island and the prime Minister said that he did not want to be a part of any Caribbean governmental organization because the island would be flooded with people from the other Island now it's in the reverse. One thing used to amaze I when I first started interacting with people born in Africa I was amazed to see the number of language people would speak some people speak as much as 7 8 9 10 languages the language of the neighbor and tribes and also of the neighboring colonized country with a French Portuguese Spanish or whatever we in the Caribbean especially the English speaking Caribbean seem only for the most part to speak one language I noticed the Haitian people in Haiti can speak French and Spanish maybe because they are bothering a spanish-speaking country.
I'm from Suriname. Indeed, we Caribbean nations have very little in common with the Latin Speaking countries, other than that we're forced to learn Spanish in schools lol. I would say that on the matter of culture, we Caribbean nations (Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica and Belize) share a very similar culture, albeit that our official language is Dutch, which is also related to English, so that makes us equal.

Fun fact: The longest river in Guyana is the Essequibo River, stretching approximately 1,010 kilometers (628 miles) across the country. Originating in the Acarai Mountains near the Brazil-Guyana border, the Essequibo River flows through diverse landscapes, including rainforests and savannas, before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Its extensive basin plays a crucial role in supporting biodiversity and sustaining various ecosystems in Guyana. The river holds cultural significance, influencing settlements and activities along its course, making it a vital element in the geographical and cultural tapestry of the region.
Awsome
Belize, Guyana, and Suriname are part of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) organisation.
The Secretariat of the Caribbean Community organisation is based in Georgetown, Guyana.
Before the 18th century South America was consider as the Windward Islands and southward. Why would Trinidad and Tobago be considered as "North American" when Trinidad is only 8 miles off the coast of Venezuela. Vs. about over a 1600 miles from Miami?
Alternately when France was losing dominance in the region (to the British) they came up with the term "Latin America" with the aim to expressly exclude the UK. France wanted it unite the Spanish, Netherland (Dutch), Portuguese, and French territories against the British forces. Hence why the Caribbean countries isn't a part of Latin America to this day.
I dont know why they trying to lock Guyana out because we are in south America but the headquarters for Caricom is located in the heart of Georgetown. Guyana's capital city lol
@Digitalislandboy At one point Trinidad was physically attached to Venezuela. It was detache by the geological plate pressure thousands of years ago. Geographically Trinidad is a "south American and Caribbean island. So to are the ABC islands.
@@peterscotland1507 Yes, but the entire "North" and "South America" construct was made up over time. The boundary of North and South America now surrounds the man-made Panama Canal. But recall Panama was once part of Colombia. That is until it was broken off to form the Panama Canal. However that would mean Colombia was once North and South American now too? Keep in mind the indigenous Arawak, Caribes, and Tainos peoples in the region had no concept of North & South America and regularly boated from South America to all the Caribbean Islands.
Well visitors don’t come and think that Suriname and Guyana will have a blue ocean view like the other caribbean haha. We do have a lot of rainforest so no blue but green view 😎

Now that you've done "Caribbean" it's only fitting you tackle the "West Indies" next 😂
British rule, slavery, Indian indentureship, sugar cane, cricket are basically the major things in common in Caribbean identity
Slavery wouldn't exist if the African tribes did not enslaved and sold their own people, even the Mayan and Aztec tribes did the same thing to one another!
@A Taylor, what does that have to do with his comment 😅, nobody asked you for that
@@ataylor3581 I'm not sure where you got your history on the slave trade but slavery started with Europeans raiding villages but later found and easier way to get slaves and Africans didn't stand a chance against their weapons.

Commentator, the Caribbean is part of North America, and any state or country that have its shore line on the Caribbean sea is geographically Caribbean. Geologically All of Central, and Islands America is part of the same land mass, technically the Caribbean sea, is just a North American sea. All countries around the Caribbean basin is Caribbean including Venezuela, which is part of Guyana region of South America, which makes the State of Guyana part of the Caribbean region. Now if you want to be more technical America is actually one continent, North, South and Islands.
To Latin Americans Caribbean means anglophone black people , that's why Cuba and Dominicans don't see themselves as Caribbean while Puerto Rico does.
Just when I thought I was the only one who thinks America is a continent. Belize here🇧🇿🥂
@@manovrsbmost dominicans do identify as caribbean but we commonly identify more as latino though we are forgotten on most latino ratings as well

I understand your argument about these countries, however, it has been widely thought that the 'Caribbean' referred to countries bordered by the Caribbean Sea!
Hence, one wonders why countries such as Puerto Rico (🇵🇷 ) and Martinique (🇲🇶) were not included in this interesting video on the Caribbean countries!!💯
Why would one wonder that when those countries are obviously within the Caribbean sea and are undoubtedly Caribbean? Is it not obvious that the video is specifically about countries that are not within the Caribbean sea yet considered Caribbean anyway?

I always think of my country Guyana as part of South America and not the Caribbean, we have a lot of common similarities with our Caricom counterpart but we as our own blend here in South America.
So I guess you would be very happy if Venezuela should take over and rule the country, that is the one thing I always did not want to see happen because then all our black people would become minorities in our own country and subject to more oppression. If you don't believe look at the island of San Andreas in the middle of the Caribbean off the coast of Costa Rica and Colombia ruled by Columbia those people have lost their country.
@@ar123..._ u talking nonsense If Venezuela to attack Guyana which Caribbean islands would rush to Guyana defense but let me tell u something if Venezuela ever attack Guyana is Brazil will defend our sovereignty not no Caricom. Brazil who train our military n will help defend Guyana in time of need
