Unfortunately that’s survival of the fittest. They probably knew they couldn’t get enough food to sustain 3 chicks but 2 they could manage. Nature is often cruel and it sucks for the youngest.

Well, sad though it is , he was too weak to compete for food while a chick, so his odds of survival would be slim to none, once out of the nest. Frankly we're the only species who cares for the weak and sick (long term), despite the fact that they won't reproduce or contribute to society. Everything else only uses their energy for the strongest offspring who are likely to pass on strong genes.

The mother bird cleans the nest when the chicks release waste to protect the nest and will not infect the young.
