I took my Zf to an event 2 hour drive away, and notice it was a little slow when I took a bunch of photos. That night, I found out I didn't put the SD card back in the day before, and because of the microSD card I leave in it all the time, my trip was saved.
Nikon should start sending you gear to review as your Nlog grading guide was more helpful than their official videos. Unlike other youtubers, you keep your reviews very objective and help the user get the maximum value from their camera.
I recently rented and reviewed the Zf (also from a video-centric point of view) and prior to that, I was scouring the web and RUclips for a video or series of videos like this... and until now, there really hasn't been any content like yours out there. So, thank you for this deep dive as I know a lot of people are going to find this helpful. You have also confirmed a lot of my feelings about the Zf as there are a lot of quirks to the camera but the 'dual base' in NLog was news to me! I really loved my time with the Zf. Yet, I think I'm going to wait for the Zfii in a few years if they can lean into making a proper hybrid camera. I also do love Nikon's picture controls and superior black and white profile (and mode) even in video. Thanks again for detailed review!!
Having a Z6 I (same sensor) which makes lovely video...the Z6 III is ALL about a faster sensor to me and it sounds like it will be I hope, otherwise I'm going Z8. Nice work btw.
Echos many of my thoughts as well. As a cool, retro, full frame photo camera, I think it also a very capable RUclips camera. Based on your overheating tests, I could have used it for all 250+ videos on my channel, I never record over 1 hour.
Thanks for this review and for keeping it positive in a space where most photographers/videographers/youtubers have the ITCH to nit pick, complain, bash or mention every little thing they hate and that they would have wanted instead of accepting things for what they are.
The zf is very fun to use, like you mentioned. Its both a good ff video camera and a fantastic stills camera. Especially to use vintage lenses on. On of the major fun 'features' is that I now have fully functioning e-mount lenses available. The zf + 40mm G is a dream combo (and works flawless in video mode to using the megadap adapter)
You didn't comment when I posted this on your N-Raw video, but I need to point out you are not correct about the view assist. It's spot on. You may need to turn off the option to that keeps the picture always bright enough to see the shadows no matter your settings. Forgot the option but it's in my other comment.
Great review on the video aspects of this camera. As someone that owned the Df, I had considered the Zf as a second to my Z8 but, I wanted more video features and I really enjoy shooting photos with the Z8, so I passed on it, for now. I'm waiting to hear what the Z6 III brings and maybe one day in the future, I will consider the Zf, with some manual focus Voigtlander lens as a pure photo camera.
you can get a cheap huge mini sd and copy your footage in camera to the mini sd from the main video card its a pretty good way to safe space and back up your footage use it on my z8 all the time
I just wish Nikon would make the video settings be independent of the photo settings when switched to video mode. Currently, if your shutter and ISO dials are set to something, they will also be the values when you switch to video. A more appropriate approach, I think, is for the video settings to be controllable via the command dials instead when on video mode and just ignore whatever value was set on the dedicated ISO and Shutter (and aperture) dials.
Another great review! Hopefully you’ll be able to get your hands on the new Z6III for a review. I’ve had the Z6I since they were released, and while it isn’t great for internal capabilities it really comes alive when you partner it with the Atomos Ninja V to be able to shoot in N-Log and access different codecs and tools. But the image still holds up for 4K 24/30 to this day. The ZF has been on my radar as a replacement since I really only need N-Log 4K 24/30 h.265 for my B and C cams, but I am curious what the Z6III will offer. Anyways, thank you for diving into these cameras for us. Very helpful and informative.
One of my clients had this camera and I was drooling over it. I definitely need a point and shoot. Now I just have to wait until the price goes down 👀.
For the price, I really wish this camera was 10 bit 4:2:2 capable. Presumably it's the same expeed 7 that's in the Z8 and Z6 Mk III, so I don't know why that wouldn't be possible.
Seems odd to me that for $500 more you can have such a feature rich video hybrid in the z63, but this camera is so neutered on the video side. It would be cool to see a second version based off the z63 sensor.
Im about to buy this camera as my main cam. Because ı decided to jump into nikon Z ecosystem. This camera looks like good budget camera but do you have any good camera advice for budget Nikon cameras ?
The Zf is essentially an improvement on the Z6 II, with features from the Z8/9 and some they are yet to get. If that fits your idea of a budget camera, the Zf will be a great fit.
Muahahahahaha! Josh says it can be a "B-camera." Muahahahahaha hahahahahahaha! It is my only digital camera. I only have 2 other film Nikon cameras. And I really don't need all the fancy features of the more "high-end" digital ones. For me, the Nikon Zf is enough, for photography, a few amateur videos, as a webcam, and a general eye-candy. It complements the Nikon Nikomat, and Nikon S3 2000 Limited Edition.

Glad that came in handy!
Love my Nikon Zf! And I have also preordered the Z6iii! Go Nikon!
Probably the most comprehensive review for video with the Nikon ZF
Thank you!

I'm super glad to hear you enjoy the videos and I appreciate the kind words. I would absolutely love to test out more Nikon products.

I've heard that adapter works great but I haven't had the chance to test it out. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@Josh_Sattin would love to see a autofocus review on this one there is really no good one out there :)
It would be cool to test it out, but I need to send this camera back and I also don't currently have an E mount lenses or the adapter.
why the 40mm G over the 40mm F2 SE with native Z?
@@olivertrees I was using the 40mm F2 SE. It's the kit lens with the Zf.

Cool idea! Thanks for sharing.
1080 p on this camera is actually quite good very detailed no rolling shutter and no overheating

If you turn off the dials up top they will work independently

It's definitely a cool camera!
Really great info here! Awesome video as always Josh
Thanks Tyler!
Thanks you so much. You have resolved some settings doubts for me
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
is there any setting i can change for photo and video? is so annoying when i want shoot photo the with different shutter speed. how to lock the sutter
Can you make a similar video on the Nikon z6 iii if you get one...btw nice video 🎉
Thanks! I will if I am able to get one.
To work with photo and video you would recommend this camera or better I'll go with a Sony A7iv
Thanks- this was a great video!

The Nikon Z5 is more of a budget camera. The Zf has a lot of "high-end" features.
The Zf is essentially an improvement on the Z6 II, with features from the Z8/9 and some they are yet to get. If that fits your idea of a budget camera, the Zf will be a great fit.
If you only do stills, the z5 is a better budget camera but if you do video as well go with zf.
Twist off lenses and accs are the right way. otherwise there wouldn't be a wrong way to do it!
My zf is heating in photo mode. Iam using v90 card. How can i solve it
how to make 4k video file size smaller
is it possible to shoot 10 bit 1080p 60fps full frame?
Hey it's me again 👋
4:2:0 vs 4:2:2 ?
Is there a way to shoot 4:2:2 on Nikon Z8? ProRes HQ? Is it worth the extra file size?
The only way to shoot 422 non raw is the ProRes. I cover this in my video about N-RAW: ruclips.net/video/YyyiKwlRXCA/видео.html
