      With information into them,
I was thinking make them so people can make obsorvetory towers around them, so it's easier to read
So you need the ability to build to get higher in the tech tree
Building soil to farm trees is one of the essential skills I consider

While true and certain things we use have/continue to become more efficient, humanity continues to invent things that consume energy with alarming inefficiency. A prime example being Crypto. Mining crypto in an inefficient power drain that globally uses more power than some countries. Bitcoin alone uses 150TW, which is more than the entire power consumption of Argentina.
You also have to think on a global scale as Kardashev did. Your thinking in 1rst world wester centric and you forget that their are more people living in countries that use our old and inefficient tools and appliances and work in factories that haven't been upgraded in 50+ years. So while the West may have energy star appliances and high efficiency rechargeable batteries, 4+ billion people don't.

Our soul stays the same but our bodies are basically renewed every time we die. We might come back one day and see that your comment, his, hers, or mine would still be here and be like "hey that guy seems like a dick. I'm gonna troll him" or " I agree with that guy" when in reality we may never know that the supposed living that commented 25-30+ years ago is actually a dead version of our past selves now living in the future. Now trying to figure out how to stop our world from for example ending, or overheating, or reaching a specific civilization level. We may not even hit Kardashev type 1 in a hundred years. When Kardashev came up with the scale I believe it was his intent to account for efficiency and different stars. it was just an order of magnitude he was going for. A K1 civilization has reached the limit of what they can get without leaving their planet. A K2 civilization has reached the limit they can get without leaving their star. A K3 civilization has reached the limit without leaving their galaxy.
Firstly, does it matter much if your solar panels are 50% efficient or 100% efficient? By Sagan's formula if we gathered only half the energy striking our planet we would be K0.97. That's a K1 as far as I'm concerned.
Secondly, not all planets, stars and galaxies are equal. A civilization on Europa could reach K1 from tidal heating alone, because tidal heating is orders of magnitude greater than insolation on that moon. A K2 around Proxima Centauri would only be a K1.72 by Sagan's formula, because Proxima Centauri has only 0.17% the output of Sol. Using rough estimates of OUR planet, OUR Sun, and OUR galaxy to judge other civilizations that exist elsewhere is hubris.

    • @jadin8317
      @jadin8317 5 лет назад +87

Isn't that how we judge everthing as humans, by naming, measuring and computing in comparison to what we have. It is not the best way of doing things but it's all we have since no other civilization has visited/invaded us to introduce is to new concepts

All our measurements are by necessity egocentric. We only have our solar system to compare against, which is why it makes sense that everything we measure against is defaulted to values we can measure. For example, one AU is the distance between the Earth and the Sun (average distance). One gravity is based upon the gravity of Earth at sea level. Etc... Any other civilization encountered in space will fall somewhere below or above those measures.

In time, energy use would ideally become more efficient and the measure of a civilisation's advancement would be ever less based on the energy they use and ever more on the amount of integrated information they process.
The animal kingdom provides an example. Empowerment based on size had its limits, with increased information processing turning out to be more potent.

Also, maybe we can use x watts to power a bunch of cars, but a civilization that has more access to information (create worm holes, terraform, etc) is far more advanced, even if they're using similar amounts of energy.

True, by the time we are able to pull something like this off on Mars we'd want it to have a thicker atmosphere and then it would hold its heat a lot better, right now on the equater its like 70F at noon, -100F at night.. since Mars gets like 44% the sun we do, increasing the heat would probably make it closer to something we are use to. I do like the idea of reaching Type 1 by not actually using all of the solar energy hitting your planet but by matching that number using solar or nuclear energy on other planets. Seems like a much more achievable thing.
Also isn't it awesome how we have Mars behind us with suuuper thin atmosphere and we can see the effects of that, and then in front of us we have Venus where the atmosphere is super dense and the winds move faster than the planets rotation and its always 800F+ . We basically have a glimpse of our future looking at one of them, if we mess our atmosphere up.

The Kardashev scale originally was meant to describe the power of advanced civilizations, in particular, those that have achieved the ability of space flight. It uses a geometric progression based on the amount of power accessed by the species as it grows. The earliest emerging civilizations don't appear, except as fractional numbers, because their activity is not very significant on a cosmic scale. These only get a full count when they might be noticed by a theoretical "outside observer," as you will soon see. I am adding a few extra levels to the original three, since there was little use for that as a measuring stick to evaluate gradual progress. Let me start near the beginning, when the culture starts to reveal its potential significance.
    Type One: "Novice"
(revised) intensive use of more than half of the planet's habitable surface area for urban dwelling, agricultural production, industry or resource extractive purposes. Oceans, ice caps and deserts are not typically considered habitable, although some oases may exist.
    Type Two: "Unstable"
(revised) threatening the ecological health of the planet by careless practices, whether by stripping resources, excessive pollution, or loss of secondary species.
    Type Three: "Emergent"
(revised) has acquired sufficient technology to make space flight and colonial ventures possible. Potential for mass self-destruction demands a quest for coexistence.
    Type Four: "Maximized"
(original) Type One: intentional use of all the insolation received by the planet for food or power.
(revised) has accessed or made feasible all of the resources and energy available on the planet. Approaching a sustainable global regime for shared resources and political consensus or a tolerant balance of powers.
    Type Five: "Outbreak"
(revised) has established self-sufficient populations, with trade routes, in multiple extra-planetary colonies, and continuing to spread. Industrial development of free-floating habitats, space infrastructure and specialized project construction begins.
    Type Six: "Established"
(revised) has explored the entire stellar system in sufficient detail to map a super-majority of its geography and resources. Technological proficiency allows pioneers to colonize the frontiers at will, and choose political independence.
    Type Seven: "Expansive"
(original) Type Two: intentional use of all of the energy output of the star for habitation and industrial purposes.
(revised) complete access to all of the resources and energy available within the star system, including its planets, moons, and smaller satellites. Experimental robotic ships explore the nearer neighboring star systems and the conditions of intermediate space.
    Type Eight: "Arrival"
(revised) first colonies established around other star systems. Ultrahigh-energy physics experiments explore the potential for travel at relativistic or supra-lightspeed velocities.
    Type Nine: "Manifesto"
(revised) seeding the stellar neighborhood with many colonial ventures, discovering the range of variety of system formation and geography, and revealing the frequency of the origins of life.
    Type Ten: "Epitome"
(original) Type Three: acquisition and use of the entire energy output of all of the stars in the whole galaxy.
(revised) technological capacity to range at will throughout the galaxy, planting colonies, developing resources and tapping unlimited energy as needed to sustain the presence and growth of the species in all its various iterations. Sophisticated modes of long distance travel and self-contained habitat ships allow for sporadic attempts to surpass galactic boundaries.
    Conclusion:
As you can see, the original version of the Kardashev scale assessing the power use of a space-faring civilization was excessively over-simplified. Having only three tiers, it did not allow for any detail or description of the intermediate stages of development. At every stage, it required an "all or nothing" obvious achievement in order to advance to the next rung of the ladder, and totally lacked any descriptive or predictive powers.
This revised version does have more capacity for descriptions, and also allows for a certain amount of flexibility. It can be used to note and measure some fractional attainments, and can accept some skipping and mixing of non-linear development patterns, while still offering some definite levels of meaningful achievement for comparisons.
Nor does the new scale have to terminate at the edge of the galaxy, or proceed to such degrees as beggar the imagination. At Type Eleven, the colonization of another galaxy, and at Type Twelve, the colonization of the whole local group of galaxies is enough, while further expansion into the greater Super Cluster and beyond may be designated by more numbered levels. These do however go so far beyond the imagination that those technologies would likely appear magical to our sensibilities. And any further would simply involve the acquisition of the entire knowable Universe.
It seems probable that, at some point, even before we claim the far reaches of our own galaxy, we are likely to discover another intelligent, civilized and space-faring species and learn not only whether the scale is truly useful, but have the realization that we must share the Cosmos with our neighbors. And that will be a clear answer to one of the oldest questions we have ever thought to ask.
If you wish to adopt and promote this revised scale for the comparison of developing civilizations and space-faring technology, you may be my guest. I ask only that you acknowledge and attribute it to its source, and name it the "Makarios Scale." Makarios means "Blessed" in greek, and any species and civilization that this scale would measure should be well aware of their blessings.
And I thank you for your patience and kind consideration. Shalom. I published this in September 2020, in my own obscure little blog:

I would definitely argue that a Type I would necessitate the civilization be multi-planetary. But Kardashev's quantification of the classification requiring 100% consumption of local stellar energy directed at a planet is extremely variable, as if we think about it while assuming extraterrestrial non-human civilizations exist then applying this rule to a civilization which may have developed around a lower output star lowers the bar considerably for them, not to mention if the civilization inhabits a planet with a significantly different atmospheric composition. So Kardashev's criteria is a good starting point, but I would think needs to be refined, or at least thought of differently. A multi-planetary Type I civilization maybe need consume 100% of planetary stellar radiation reception for their planet of origin but utilized across their entire civilization? This fits still within the rule, as a multi-planetary Type I which consumes 100% of stellar radiation on each individual planet has a total consumption greater than 100% of a single planet's reception, pushing it beyond a Type I and well on its way to a Type II.

Just figuring out how to do so much more from a programming level lead to massive increases in visual quality.

I was suggesting that getting rid of everything related to pure entertainment and spending all time being productive towards a single goal of becoming a type 1 civilization. No Movies, no board games, no video games, no sports, no hiking, no vacations, no junk food, no hobbies, etc. A civilization entirely focus on learning and advancing its technology. The concept of fun is non existent as the your purpose to exist is to contribute to the advance of technology. The amount of resources the civilization would need to get higher up the technology tier list would be less than what we would need because they would be much more efficient with their resources. The concept of a single person owning 5 mansions wouldn’t exist, everyone lives in a small room with their basic needs and nothing more. This would basically be a hive mind type civilization. This is unlikely to ever be a real type seeing as intelligent beings on earth need entertainment as mental stimulation. From the perspective of us they would be basically gods. And I don't mean that lightly, they would literally be gods by any definition. If such a civilization exists they could have actually created our universe as a power source and could have done so multiple times. The capabilities of such a society (if you could even call them that at that point) would be truly unfathomable.

Hello, thank you for the great video. What about this option.
    1. Launch satellites that orbit the sun.
    2. These satellites will use the solar and heat, maybe even the star's fussion.
    3. This energy would be stored on huge batteries onboard the satelite.
    4. Once batteries are at capacity, the satelite either: 5. a) Travels back to earth to deliver the energy.
    5. b) Transmits the energy back to earth either via radio waves (simmilar to Nikola Tesla's methode of transmitting electricity via antenna) or
    5. c) Transmit energy to earth via laser beam.
Of course energy captured from sun has to be greater than energy used to deliver satellite to and from orbit.

I have been a long time fan of the idea of travel into outer space. I love science fiction and the creative futures imagined. And I love the explorations real science is making into the cosmos. The unbelievable immensity of our universe is awe-inspiring and humbling. Discussions like this are facinating and I am excited that David Kipping is doing the rigorous calculations needed to really explore these ideas.
However, it is becoming more apparent to me that these dreams of space travel and future civilizations which utilize huge amounts of energy may also be the death of those things which make this planet so beautiful (and life sustaining). I recently learned that that my carbon footprint for taking 2 round trips airplane flights across the US continent was equal to all the heat, electricity and water I consume in a year. Wow! As an American, my carbon footprint is already way above the world average. I wonder what the carbon footprint of a trip to the moon is? What is the carbon footprint of simply launching a satellite? You can't get something for nothing (1st law of thermodynamics).
The idea of being a Kardashev type 1 civilization sounds horrible if we have to live in completely artificial enclosures, air conditioned and not able to see the sun. No sunsets? No running freely on the beach, or exploring a forest and all the smells and colors and sounds of the varied life around you? No wind in your hair? Even the small technological advances of today have repercussions. If you knew that upgrading your cellphone every 3 years would mean the extinction of the polar bears, would you accept that? Someone please do the calculations. I fear that most people do not realize the impact each of these "advances" of society has on our planet. The ideas of ever increasing GDP, ever increasing energy consumption and technological growth are out of balance if they do not take into account the impact to our now fragile planetary ecosystem. This planet is the most amazing one we know of - it supports our life without a spacesuit! And it's beautiful. Let's make taking care of it the first priority, and technological advances secondary. I believe we may still realize some of our SciFi dreams, but let's not sacrifice life on this planet to do it. I think the Kardashev system of civilization "sophistication" is bonkers. To me, highly advanced civilizations understand the complex balances of life, and work to sustain biodiversity and ecological health. They wouldn't destroy life, simply to go fast and far in their spaceships.
I'm curious of your thoughts on this everyone...

nothing to worry about, the planet will go up in smoke just like it did 66 million years ago. Existence gives no fucks about human evolution. Plus we have some hungry egos that desperately want to put their foot on Mars and do space tourism and stuff. There's big money in there. To tell you a secret, I don't think we'll make it to type 1 civilisation because our survival instinct is too strong to let us live in peace and we'll end-up killing each other or making this planet into a shit-hole before you know it. It is highly probable that most forms of life hosted on other plants didn't manage to get past their ego and so they self destruct hence no alien contact so far, albeit there are some fuzzy flying saucer video filmed mostly in the times nobody had smartphones. It's not that I have up hope but people like you and me are very few. Most people trust that their mind are going to solve all of their problems so they enslave themselves to their minds thinking that "If only we would have more technology and control". People that make the big decisions also are driven by their egos and the masses are dumbed down with cheap entertainment fast food so the structure of population is for the most part 80% ignorant idiots, 19% opportunists with hungry egos and the 1% who are dreamers and can't get anything moving.
"Saving" the planet is a loosing battle. Actually there is no planet to be saved. Mother earth akin more to a vagina. it's a self regulating organism. There are mechanisms in place which regulate each other and the human species at the moment is a parasite which goes against the bio-habitat that buit its DNA so humans will keep on destroying nature until something's gonna flip. I see this planet like the human body. One can abuse his body in ignorance by not resting properly, eating crap food, smoking, drinking but when the first cardiac arrest comes in it's all going down from there.
Sometimes I listen to people talking about how Elon Musk is such a genius that he's going to go to mars and establish a colony there. And I'm like: You fucking idiots. There is no air there, there is no grass there, nothing to eat, everything has to be controlled and maintained artificially. On this planet you can pick up a fruit from a tree and eat it. I don't understand what are these people thinking. But it goes on to show the level of ignorance humanity is at and how crowds are following these insane egoistic idiots. People who are at the top, people who decide to make these investments do so because we gave away our power. When we buy something we invest in that person. this is one thing people don't realise. We don't just buy stuff from amazon, we invest in guys like Bezos or Musk and so on. In order for the society to change people need to change their value system and look for more consciousness in their leaders . . .but we know who our leaders are.
      Enjoy the freak show!

Arthur C Clarcke talked about some space radiators to get rid of the excess heat in 3001: Final Odyssey.
But logically, I think a Type 1 civilization cannot happen if it stays ground-based. It must become mostly a space civilization. We talk here about a civilization that could live mostly in a ring aroung the planet in geostationnary distance using space elevators. The Ground would be mostly for wildlife and agriculture.

You're assuming that it's impossible to coexist with wildlife as a K1 civilization. If people live in "hobbit style" homes with underground corridors connecting them, and agriculture is designed in such a way that the entire planet becomes a farm without denting wildlife numbers, and artificial intelligence actively protects people from big cats and bears (train the wildlife to not attack people, intervene when it does so anyways), and we're harvesting every source of energy up to the ecologically sustainable limits for the planet, then it would be entirely reasonable for a K1 planet to be covered in lush landscapes brimming with wildlife.

    • @colinsmith1495
      @colinsmith1495 5 лет назад +13

Honestly, I think a Type 1 civ on a single planet is unrealistic. There's just too much that the _planet_ needs energy for, assuming you want any kind of ecosystem.
Achieving Type 1 on multiple planets, that's feasible. By the time you're talking Type 2, you're possibly talking Dyson Spheres, and thus a totally engineered ecosystem, so it's possible to achieve with a civ built around 1 star, though probably harvesting material resources from multiple stars.

    • @cerebraldreams4738
      @cerebraldreams4738 5 лет назад +5

@@colinsmith1495 - You're forgetting that heat can be turned back into energy, and even if you only get half of your energy back that still means you can reach K1 status while using 2/3 of a planet's available energy. You can also obtain energy and dissipate heat through orbital platforms, especially if you have a cable linking them to the planet. There's no reason you'd have to sacrifice nature to get to K1 status. In fact, carefully manicured landscapes full of genetically engineered wildlife could be part of what gets you to K1 status.

@@cerebraldreams4738 While this is true, I imagine it will be a lot easier, and more likely to occur, to generate that power in a civilization spread through multiple planets. Also, remember that we don't need to get ALL of our energy from the sun. We also have geothermal, tidal, and nuclear energy sources.

    2 takeaways:
    1) Yes, in my mind, it wouldn't make sense that a Type1 would not be multiplanetary, on one side you have all the issues you mentioned, on the other there's the case of what would we use that energy for if we aren't even ferrying cargo across planets. It looks like we might be mutiplanetary in the next 100y. Not as likely to be type I before that. And the logic would go for a type2, surelly they would have multiple star systems at their disposal rather then completely harvesting a single star. Very risky to experiment in a planet/star if it's the only one you have.
    2) We would probably want to recycle our energy. As you said, the energy isn't wasted it's converted into kinetic energy. Rather then build a giant fan to cool it down, build a giant "fan" (read, wind turbines) to harvest that warmth (and cool it back down as a biproduct)
Imagine the following experiment: a 1m cube in vaccum. at the bottom there is a computer, and as it uses energy it warms the air around it, causing the now warm air to flow upwards and the cool air to flow downwards. Now place 2 wind turbines that capture the energy of said air moving both upwards and downwards. The process of using electricity by the computer provides an opportunity to harvest more power. Not claiming that you will get a 100% recyclable system, but if you could recycle 50% of the consumed power, that would mean that every 1 watt of power harvested from the sun would produce 2 watts of power before being released back into the planet. With a 90% recycle rate it would give us an entire order of magnitude: 1 watt harvested = 10 watts used before it leaves the planet's control

Just got recommended this video, and seeing that hyper-logistic trend of energy consumption made me think. The trend isn't necessarily only showing us the trend of energy consumption but it might also be displaying the increase in sustainability of our appliances. As our population grows exponentially, our technology needs to become more and more efficient and our use of the energy needs to become more and more sustainable to keep our planet's ecosystem alive and the environment thriving.
I think the best way to quantify how advanced a civilisation is would be to tailor the equation more towards efficiency and average mortality age/life expectancy ratio.
But that's just my theory, thanks for the interesting video.
