Having owned a 1st and 2nd gen X5, they really are that tough, can not comment on the new stuff but the 1st gen was and still is as tough as nails, a real tank.
it was obviously a scripted race, you can see the bike pulling away in the twisty uphill and downhill segments, and yet, in the next shot the car's right back on it's tail. gotta make it look interesting for the camera
Hey guys, videographer here. Ditch the vignette effect. Has a purpose but not for an action sequence or for that long. He was having fun driving that car.
I’m totally with you as far as modern productions but in the context of what they were trying to do and competing against the juggarnaut that was Top Gear, this was a totally competent style decision.
What a load of bollocks!!! There is NO WAY a 3ton 4x4 can beat a rally prepared motor bike especially on such terrain! This is a just dramatised TV advert for BMW!!
I don't know about the newage Dakar race....but BMW has always been the hero of Dakar rally of 80s...Gastan rahier is one hell of a rider in his r80 gs...
If you read Charley's book about his race, he talks about the mods to both the bike and the car. The car was a bit of a compromise, as they wanted to go BMW as there was sponsorship with the bike things, but the timelines limited what could be done, so the X5 was done sort of up, but not as complete as Charley would have liked. It's a good read. I really liked the bit when the rider on the old XT500 comes along. I used to ride an XT500, so I really enjoyed that story.
Tiff is a fockin nutter! The way he was pushing that X5 on the bends.. God almighty, I so would've shat my pants on the near flip, and he was fockin laughing? The man's got some steel balls, that's for sure!
man i hate thoose scripted races. but think about the stresses on the car, its unbelievable they can take this kind of abuse for the whole rallye and keep going.
I thought it would be the support vehicle's job requirement to keep up with the bike. I mean, you can't provide much support if you keep falling farther behind, right?
Charlie Boorman damaged the bike pretty badly during that race ..not to mention breaking both arms while at it. Did they fix the bike properly? Race result makes me think maybe not.
bikes are better than cars off-road for the simple reason that when push comes to shove you can carry - light - motorcycles and you'll do less damage due to low weight. On a smooth dirt road it might me another matter. Yes, you can winch a jeep and your buddy can pull you out of the mud but there are many places off road where you need the small size, or the ability to pull an enduro bike up a cliff side with ropes - places that simply you can't think of traversing with a jeep.
If you're looking at the exhaust, it's because it's a race truck and off road only, so no need for mufflers and catalytic converters. Plus, good chance this is turbocharged, which helps to muffle the sound of the engine a little bit.
Anyone interested there s a tv series of the Dakar rally following Charley, Simon Pavey and Matt, it is called: Race to Dakar, and you can see it on youtube! Anyone whos has watched the series know that the support vehicle is a pile of shit..
ONLY REASON THE bdw keept up with the bike was because the track was not flat corners were at a slope alowing the bmw to run through them alot faster if the track would be perfect flat bmw would have been slower still it was a nice race
NotIrishRider the car have over 445 horsepower, i didn't watch the begining so i do not know if he using the v8 x5 which is 445 horsepower, or x5m which is 555 horsepower, or v6 which is 300 horsepower, or diesel version.....but I assume the x5 have more horsepower then the bike
5:16 Man, what a reflex. I would like to see the Top Gear ambitious but rubbish blokes pull something like that!!! But then again, none of them are a real racing driver. Except The Stig. Maybe....
nothing special. its a standard reflex like you pull your hand when water is hot. everyone should be able to handle this unless you have suffert stroke or down syndrom
Of course the bikes gonna loose its a single cylinder engine design for torque and light weight not performance if you want performance you need a 1000cc inline 4 bike
virus468 "Performance" is not strictly a function of engine power, it depends on the type of race. No inline liter bike could perform as well as a 650 on that course. If we were talking about the Isle of Man, then yes a liter bike would win. How old are you? 12?
This just shows how bad a motorbike is over long distance ,A support vehicle weighing 3 tonnes ,can even keep up ,I bet the racing trucks and not the support trucks get to the finish quicker ,And that is even more ridiculous

David Theuri why? The bike's a bmw aswell
Just bought myself the 'regular' F650 GS Dakar and damn, do I long going offroad with it :D
I don't know about the newage Dakar race....but BMW has always been the hero of Dakar rally of 80s...Gastan rahier is one hell of a rider in his r80 gs...
hmmm looked like another BMW sponsored predetermined scripted "race" to me.
are u a troll or did you just not notice that the bike was also a BMW :P ?
toxik217 But they point is to make the X5 look like a very capable SUV.
+Mark Borkowski Watch "Race to Dakar". This X5 was a huge nightmare.

guy on xt500 is called Henno Van Bergeik
Which year were these raced at Dakar ?
Hi Peter, 2006, there's a SKY documentary about it called 'The Race to Dakar' should be now cheaply available on DVD online :-)
Gosh, Simon looks young here. Can see where Llel gets his good looks!! I must have seen this years ago, but it was well worth the second watching. Les
Well I really enjoyed it. Very cool seeing those two racing together. Don't care who won
the vignetting they do is possibly the most sickening thing ever. Black on one side, then the other, then the top then the corner . . . Hate it.
Yeah, it's actually a camera lense. It works really well, when they use it once or twice during a film, but fucking 100000 times?
The constantly changing camera angles and panning and changing is a bit much!
and people say the x5 not good for anything off road, and they basically just changed the tire and make it a lot heavier.
How was he still right in front of he after he recovered from almost flipping the car smh lol
Tiff is a fockin nutter! The way he was pushing that X5 on the bends.. God almighty, I so would've shat my pants on the near flip, and he was fockin laughing? The man's got some steel balls, that's for sure!
Got a feeling that Tiff crashed into the bike at the finish line
what kind of mods are on the bike ?
starts at 4:10
man i hate thoose scripted races.
but think about the stresses on the car, its unbelievable they can take this kind of abuse for the whole rallye and keep going.
Being chased by a drunken brit omg,
This looked like a lot of fun. I always love using vehicles for NOT their intended purpose.
1:02 actually it's 652cc ;)
I thought it would be the support vehicle's job requirement to keep up with the bike. I mean, you can't provide much support if you keep falling farther behind, right?
Charlie Boorman damaged the bike pretty badly during that race ..not to mention breaking both arms while at it. Did they fix the bike properly? Race result makes me think maybe not.
Michal Gloc race results? this is horribly scripted! there was no race here.
+Michal Gloc The only thing they didn't fix properly here was the amount of stage they made.
The vignette they used in this show always drove me insane. Their editor was a bloody idiot.
Is that using the same engine than my 2005 F650GS Dakar?
+pordiosero80 basically it's tje same engine. Maybe they have modified it a bit to produce more HP. The exhaust is a sebring as far I can see.
F650 is plenty powerful to beat the x5 without mods
F650gs is a great lightweight enduro bike, comfortable at 80 mph on the highway or offroad single track, mud and sand. Very fun bike.
The lies make angels in heaven cry

5:15 Nearly rolls his car
Tiff: Whoa lololol
anyone knows whats the purpose of the straight pipes on the X5? save weight?
If you're looking at the exhaust, it's because it's a race truck and off road only, so no need for mufflers and catalytic converters. Plus, good chance this is turbocharged, which helps to muffle the sound of the engine a little bit.
any one knows what size tires on the X5??
How close to flipping it at the end
I agree it was scripted but the point is imagine running that race over 5000 miles and i thought the isde was hard thats crazy
The x5 in Dakar was pure krap
1:16
damn
Obviously faked but what suspension kit did they use on the spare parts car. I need to win a trophy truck race myself.
Anyone interested there s a tv series of the Dakar rally following Charley, Simon Pavey and Matt, it is called: Race to Dakar, and you can see it on youtube!
Anyone whos has watched the series know that the support vehicle is a pile of shit..
+T0BBi94 Nobody cares.. The bike is garbage and the race is staged..
Francisco Lol. Lots of swearing from a feminine guy driving a girl bike.
Steve Ringer At least i drive bikes and i comment, and you never touched one, so keep replying, make yourself look stupid
Thanx for repying my friend. I just dont understand why a man drives a girlie bike.
Steve Ringer You dont make any sense, why ur even watching this video? Lfmao, fat boy, and i drive a dirt bike ;)
these are just made to be a good race, after that near flip the bike wouldve been gone!
BMW is a company that allegedly makes sports cars, but in fact, BMW doesn't have significant victories in motorsport.
Seriously? almost as lamely scripted as Top Gear challenges.
Not a hope in hell that lump would stay with the bike in the real world!
ONLY REASON THE bdw keept up with the bike was because the track was not flat corners were at a slope alowing the bmw to run through them alot faster if the track would be perfect flat bmw would have been slower still it was a nice race
Which BMW? The bike is a BMW as well...
car
NotIrishRider the car have over 445 horsepower, i didn't watch the begining so i do not know if he using the v8 x5 which is 445 horsepower, or x5m which is 555 horsepower, or v6 which is 300 horsepower, or diesel version.....but I assume the x5 have more horsepower then the bike
Fixed !!!...The f650 was way ahead ...Definitely a publicity stunt for x5 marketing
Would have been much better without the human soundtrack during the race, y'know?
My stepmom drives an x5. XD
What a load of bollocks
Bike win
spare parts almost wiping out the main star, you mean !? ;-)
WYNNES motors hehe :)
I want that bike
In reality, that bike with that rider could have lapped that car with that ninkenpoop
fine
EWAN MACGREGOR AND CHARLEY BOORMAN AND EWAN MACGREGOR AND CHARLEY BOORMAN
BMW with a motor spare on the back... so BMW :P
Jp Fernandez What’s so funny? A replacement engine for the bike
Never mind the script and poor filming and choreography. Two BMWs just prooved they dont use indicators..... nah im just kidding haha
The drive was so fake... Even his tone was fake.
hey........... mike take it slow '',
almost killed the guy..
Cookie
Let me guess, a BMW won ?
X5 sucks so hard.
That bike is too heavy for offroad a race prepared ktm 690 Enduro would have done much better.
mean while in the real world dakar has 450cc limited rules so this exercise is pointless
Why does any one watch this show ? Rubbish.
lol
bullshit.
Maybe if the car wasn't driven by a muppet...
Stupid edit on these type shows
Of course the bikes gonna loose its a single cylinder engine design for torque and light weight not performance if you want performance you need a 1000cc inline 4 bike
This is not a drag race
don't go into nonsense please...
virus468 "Performance" is not strictly a function of engine power, it depends on the type of race. No inline liter bike could perform as well as a 650 on that course. If we were talking about the Isle of Man, then yes a liter bike would win. How old are you? 12?

yes and no one falls off and nothing breaks
LOLOL are bike just losed to a 3 ton I-6 turbo Diesel support cars lol. Cars 1 Bikes 0.
