    I have a lot of respect for JVC gear of that era.. Wasn't keen on the looks, but they were literally "sell it and forget it".. they never came back through the workshop.. 38 years on.. a couple of caps.. superb

    All the newbies out there see “Darlington Power Pack” on a receiver like this, and scatter. Yes, I replaced mine. But my SX-780 is going on 40 years old. If they were discreet transistors, they would likely need replacing as well. Never was a big fan of JVC receivers, but this one does look and sounds quite nice.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 лет назад +1

      The darlington power packs were far more reliable than what came later where they put the complete amp inside a IPM. (IPM=integrated power module)

    Awesome Repair your video's Teach me so much, You don't recap a whole entire board, like you did Isolate the problem you got to the root of the problem and fix it,

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 лет назад

      Hobbiests typically just shotgun the entire board because they don't understand or have the experience or knowledge to diagnose the component that failed.. There are exceptions, such as in critical applications such as life support equipment or critical equipment such as in nuclear power plants where a failure can not occur so they will swap out the board, and the old board will be totally rebuilt, but in non life support or mission critical devices, any engineer worthy of being called an engineer will troubleshoot and find the root cause and replace just the part that caused the failure.In consumer electronics, entire boards were not available, and had to be repaired to component level, as the cost of a replacement board was more than the cost of a new unit. That continues to this day.

  • @AestheticFunk
    @AestheticFunk 6 лет назад +1

    At around 7 minutes you show a feed on your oscilloscope of the tuner input and output. Is that what those metal prongs sticking out of the board are typically for? I see those sometimes in older gear but never knew what they were for.
    I'm assuming if they are exactly for that purpose that they were put there specifically for technicians to help with repairs?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 лет назад +1

      Those are wire wrap stakes where the connection is made.

    • @AestheticFunk
      @AestheticFunk 6 лет назад +2

      12voltvids So they aren't specifically put there to help diagnose problems but you use them to check out signals, gotcha.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 лет назад

      Nope. Wire wrapping was popular for awhile. It was fast, and quite reliable. Telephone industry used wire wrapping for years to make connections at the central office. Still in use in many switching offices.

    Nice unusual looking and nice sounding receiver, just wondering your take on cleaning slide pots. Not sure if it was yourself or another channel (possibly either Shango or Jordan Pier) who mentioned that slide pots have a tendency to degrade badly if over-cleaned? (As in drowned in cleaner rather than a shot like the D100 can gives you) I've learned this myself, the hard way, and just wondering if you've seen this or what you think might cause it on sliding over rotary controls as I wouldn't have thought it until I noticed sliders getting worse the more effort I went to & then hearing the comment that the cleaner was killing them.

    • @danmackintosh6325
      @danmackintosh6325 3 года назад

      I use Servisol Super 10 (easier to get in the UK and works well generally. I keep saying I should treat myself and try some deoxit just never seem to be able to justify the price without having tried it first) but something about the sliders they just don't seem to like it.

      Then Darlington power pack is just that. A pair of Darlington transistors and bias resistors. The rest of the drive circuit is in a seperate voltage amplifier. The STK power pack put the voltage amplifier and outputs in one package. They were supposed to increase reliability. That wasn't the case.

    ugh i don't miss that cellular noise that comes thru radios. if i remember right, its mostly bands like 3G and older that gave off that noise. if it buzzed a couple of times, it was likely a network reconnect or a text message but if it was a constant buzz, you were getting a phone call. hated it!

      Like I care. All capacitors will eventually fail. A wise man once said. "The reliability of any electronic device is inversely proportional to the number of electrolytic capacitors it contains." When another one fails I guess if it is still in service I will see it again. If the owner wants to pay to change them all then that is what is done but I have yet to have anyone bring in anything, in the 35 years I have been servicing electronics and say "recap it, change em all, dont worry about they cost, I want em all done" not once in 35 years.
