  • This is a crazy long video. Sorry about that. I wanted to show as much of Trail 6 at Foresthill OHV as I could. Almost the entire trail is included. I did voice over on this video, which I've never done before. I talk about the trail, my bike (KTM Freeride 250r) and the comparisons to my last time through this trail on my KX450.

    Even though a few years back, great job with narration. Amazing the stark difference with a purpose built bike. Not to mention e start!! I too also have a KX 450 so I completely get it

      Thanks Jeffromoto, I always feel weird doing to voice over. I don’t have the Freeride anymore, but it was a great bike on trails like this. I have the KTM 300 now, a little heavier, a little wider, a little taller, but still works on the technical trails.

    great video. The voice over is well done and clear.
    I felt compelled to comment and I am afraid this will be about as long as your video!
    You see, I am an old timer and I do not think I will ever go down loop 6 again. That's why I was watching your video and others.
    I am from way back. Been going up there since the early 70's and have been riding to this day. Although currently nursing a broken fibula from my XR600R falling on me in a get-off.
    Some history;
    The pavement going up in there used to end at baker ranch and it was dirt all the way to robinson flat. Not a smooth road either! There was no such thing as sugar pine res, china wall, a staging area or anything like it. The real great riding we searched for and made a day out of was single track that amounted to old mining routes with blaze marks. What was the best were the trails to the N fork of the american river. humbug bar, italian bar, mumford bar, sailer bar and so on. But out there were trails too that are long gone due to logging ect, crossing over to deadwood ridge from the foresthill divide east of china wall staging area. Of course there was always the western states trail. From michigan bluff up to the cemetery. The last chance trail. The duncan creek trail. All part of the western states. In 1976 legislature passed a law called the N fork of the american river closure act which made it illegal to ride motorized vehicles down to the river. A very sad day indeed.
    And it was about 93 or so we first came upon loop 6 while messing around on deadwood ridge near last chance. The trail was not finished yet and we met the "trail maker". A single person using a machine that would dig into the side of the hill a bit and deposit the dirt off to one side. Although dusty at that time of year and still loose packed, it was a joy to ride! So smooth and void of all the roots, rock outcroppings and dislodged brickwork. At that time I rode an 82 XR500R and that was the thing to use back then. But now, it is just too big and heavy. I use the xr600r now still, and I am old. Thus, I may never go down again. I have gone down to eldorado creek too many times to count. Round trips on loop 6 were mainly what my fellow riders and I would go for.
    Fast forward in the 90's and myself and others from my group, "the SDA", joined the TBSA. The TBSA is an old and wilting group of riders. But you see there on the loop 5 where it is posted on a sign a dedication to the group for their continued volunteer help to maintain the trail. We used to do two outings a year where we would team up with the USFS to improve portions of the trail.
    OK, sorry to be so long at this, there is more.
    What kind of camera are you using. There seems to be no fish eye effect like go-pro. Or is that in your post editing? I am thinking of getting an FDR-X3000 by sony.
    You spoke more than once of going off the trail and your carrying a strap now. Reminds me of the one and only time we took the american bar trail. Look it up. It may very well still be open. One way down to the middle fork of the american. Something you can take when the high country is snowed in. I had just gotten my 92 xr and had sold my 82 to my friend who went off the trail. I had wized though all switch backs and waited at the top. They never showed so I had to go back down and find them. I kind of had a premonition it might be needed this ride and this was the first time I carried a "deer hoist" in my pack. That and some short lengths of rope got the bike back up. Super steep there!
    You might like to check it. We used to carry a big ole rig back in those days. Cool video, but the shots of the bike off the trail and the hoisting begin at about 5 minutes in. This is old video 8 footage captured to digital.
    You can find my channel, 2manyrides, as well the video I speak of is american bar SDA 4008
    Yes, that is ride #4008!
    So, keep up the good work on your videos. I for one, would like to have you point out where you are more. I get lost on which way we are going on loop 6.
    Of course, I am only 1/3 the way in it so far. I will watch the whole thing over time.
    Keep on riding,
    2many

      Alright tommyjeep, I just ran through the last 2/3rds of your video.
      Part two;
      Ok, now I have my bearings and was able to follow you the rest of the way out to the foresthill divide. Ya see, I know the hills back in there like most don't. The combination of the 2008 fire with all the old growth being burned and cut, and the fact it must be over 15 years since I've ridden down to the bridges, it can be hard to tell where you are at.
      I see, go-pro... and I see you have fish eye effect in your video.
      I heard you wondering. No that trail was not there before crossing the eldorado creek canyon. They dropped the bridge materials with a helicopter and built those specifically for the ohv trail, loop 6. back in that day the trail was 3 foot wide all the way with everything smoothed out. No tire ruts what-so-ever, no wash-outs. That lasted for about 2-3 years and trail maintenance began to include installing erosion protection at switchbacks and crossings. Inlay-ed brick, cobbles encapsulated in cyclone fence wire. Even tire strips later. But it all gets torn up and the squeaky wheel gets the grease. So they fix up over at sugar pine a lot. That's deadwood ridge road you keep coming across. At what you call the "south bridge" crossing of it, you are only hundreds of feet from the deadwood cemetary and the trailhead of the michigan bluff portion of the western states trail. (hikers, horses, bicycles and motorcycles. At michigan bluff you would need to be street legal or turn back. But it is worth it to just go down to the bridge and back up from deadwood. As you know it is cool down at edorado creek in the summer. Up on deadwood ridge you came upon what you called a "dispersed campsite". That is actually the parking for the trailhead to last chance. You are at the last chance trailhead and there are 37 switchbacks to the bridge. Some are in such a way, standing there you can look at 4 from one vantage point. It's a trail going right to the bottom. In this day, with a bike like yours, you can do it well and find it a challenge too. There's a video of it about 9 years old of a guy knocking it out on his two stroke. You can keep on going to robinson flat from there. western states has their 100 mile run on it once a year. That is why you saw the event markings and some trash.
      As you crossed deadwood yet again on the way back you went past the aqua duct area. You didn't mention it, but that aqua duct has alot to do with some previous long gone routes through the area pre-trail system days. Aqua ducts can be found at the american bar trail too as the end of my sda 4008 video shows. From watching your video I would think you are un-aware of the trails I spoke of before. But look on any forest service map and you can see them go down to the river from the foresthill divide. My favorite... Ride to the river, swim, fish, have lunch!
      One of the better ones was humbug bar because once at the river, it turns into the eucure bar trail. Runs 7 miles along the river, crosses a foot bridge then climbs out of the canyon and puts you in alta at freeway 80. There is no other crossing up stream until you take the robinsons flat/soda springs road and and go over to 80, that's a long ways!
      Down at mumford bar, you get to the beginning of the john muir trail. 16 miles along the river heading east until you come out at sailor flat. Did it once in my life! Last chance trail? I walked that once to check it out and video/count the switch backs. I made a video of that, and other shots relevant to the story. Look for last chance trail on youtube and scroll down to mine, but be for-warned, we are a goofy bunch...This one does not show us actually riding last chance trail. we are at loop six/last chance trailhead. And my videos do not follow your format. I mean, I try to show what I call the story of the ride. The highlights of the day. Back then, to get motion footage I would get going, lift my camcorder to shoot, drive clutchless with one hand. Even today I am using a hardrive camcorder and a home made mount. so I gotta get with it.
      The two times I did take the last chance trail...
      The first was a down and back up on a 1974 TR5MX. Google that! Pain in the ass!
      Second time was on the XR500R. Down and out the other side. We came out at greek store station that day and rode ohv's all the way back to the truck on pavement.
      So, I liked your video and your style, keep on riding! Sorry about writing you a novel, but I am healing a broken leg here! gimmie a break!

      Thanks for the novel! HA! This video is a couple years old and I've been through the area several times since then. I've ridden down the 37 switchbacks route, over to Last Chance Canyon and back up the switchbacks a couple times. Fun trail. I appreciate your knowledge on the area and I'll be looking for the other trails you talked about. I've also ridden the WST from Michigan Bluff up to trail 6. That's a fun section, but you do come across hikers that don't think our bikes belong. I'm always as courteous as can be, but I don't bother to hang out and discuss politics. My camera is a Go_Pro. Sometimes it's mounted on the side of my helmet, sometimes under the visor. I've tried a chest mount, but the angle changes so much if you're sitting or standing that you end up with a lot of wasted footage. I definitely recommend you upgrade your camera situation and get both hands on the bars :)

      Thanks for your reply. It has been so long since I wrote that... I thought maybe the “novel” did not go over so well. The hand held camcorder was the early days. I have a few mounting options with my current rig.
      Yep, I have ridden the last chance trail and out the other side. Ha, I remember one time I did it I had forgotten my helmet at home!
      Anyway, I’ll say again, your video was good and again the commentary was a plus.
      Keep on riding!

    The chest mount works very well for me on dirt bikes on account of hitting so many branches on the helmet mount; that said, your mic and audio are excellent! Love trail six:)

      I tried the chesty mount, but I transition from sitting to standing and back too often. Half the time the camera is either pointed at the sky or my fuel tank.

      Ouch, that's a tough place to go over the edge. I believe at that time when you were there the bridge had already been clobbered by the tree. It's pretty sketchy to ride across currently, especially when it's wet.

  • @thebogeyman
    @thebogeyman 3 года назад

    IMO, trail #6 is not super hard. Hard, yes. But (again, IMO) not as hard as some would have you believe. There are a few sections that do require careful navigation that really give the overall trial its black-diamond designation. It's a loop, so there's only one way in & out. You can ride it clockwise, or counterclockwise. I believe most people prefer taking the right turn at the "start" (where the sign is).
    That all being said, I personally wouldn't attempt to ride it solo. But, that's just me.I've ridden it several times - both on my Husaberg 570 and my Husky 350.

    • @tommyjeep

      I agree, It’s no Erzberg Rodeo, but it’s one of the more challenging trails in Foresthill. There are a couple of spots you can cut out of the trail early if there’s issues (Deadwood, Michigan Bluff), but there are very long sections with no escape route.

    • @tommyjeep
      @tommyjeep  4 года назад

      For a beginner, trails 1, 3 and 7 are the best. Trail 2 is a little tougher. Trail 4 is probably next due to how rocky it is. Trail 5 is pretty tough, and trail 6 is the toughest of the numbered trails.
