Right?? He recorded that one months ago, but we haven’t felt like we had footage epic enough to use it in a video so we just sat on it 😂

For picking without gloves, you can also try folding the leaves down from the top to buffer between your fingers and the rest of the plant since the top sides don't have trichomes. The soup looks delicious! I like to use it in place of spinach for making saag paneer.

Nettles are my favorite foraged green! I get that craveability aspect - like that first hit of chlorophyll in Springtime that just sings! I think the first time I had them was at a restaurant in SF (very Chez Panisse - esque) in a pasta with grilled trumpet mushrooms- the dish has stuck with me for many many years. They are hard to find where I live!!

I live in India, and we have access to some of the freshest greens and veggies. Foraging isn't very big in india, but your videos inspire me to start looking for foraging guides in my extremely urban City! All my best wishes to you for sharing with us this cozy, patient and abundant part of your life :)

I love to see other people forage and cook and eat nettles, but have to say I'm glad not to have any! Also glad that we don't have snow in Tasmanian winter, so many crops are still standing in the garden by spring. Kales, chard, broccoli, cabbage, the magnificent leek, parsnips, carrots, swedes (rutabaga), Brussels sprouts etc.

If you have a plant named sorrel (Rumex acetosa) in your area, the leaves instantly cure nettel stings if you mush them up and spread them over the injury
Edit: they are also edible and quite delicious. Very sour. Over here we eat them to fish

@@HomegrownHandgathered have you ever tried nettel seeds? They're also quite good, roasted in a pan and mixed into a glass of honey. Nutty and earthy, good on bread or pancakes

One wise man told me a great technique for gathering or weeding stinging nettles. He used his bare hands to weed out his garden and never used gloves. Be sure to try it. In his words - The leaves don't sting you from the bottom the part that stings is the top part of the leaves. :D I have weeded stinging nettles for a while now and I know for a fact that you can do this. Have fun not being in overcoming your fears of the infamous stinging nettle. :D
P.S. Excuse me for the bad grammar.

Living in Los Angeles which is essentially a coastal desert, there aren't many opportunities to forage or hunt. Zero in fact in my area. I think that's why I really enjoy your video's. It's a totally different lifestyle.

See all throughout my life I’ve been told where the stinging nettles are, and why not to touch them. Now I learn I can eat them, and all of a sudden……….. where are all the stinging nettles??!!!

Nettles are one of my favorite edible weeds! I know a couple farmers that let me come into their gardens to help weed, and I take all the unwanted nettles, pineapple weed, dandelions, and other such "weeds." One gardeners weeds is another persons soup!

You probably are deficient in iron and other minerals. Nature has its way of producing everything we need, when we need it, so foraging and eating seasonally is a great way to replenish the nutrients that we lack over winter.
