- "Supercar... Supercar... With beauty and grace, as swift as can be, watch it flying through the air... It travels in space, or under the sea, and it can journey anywhere." So heralded the opening titles of Supercar, the classic Supermarionation series from the team that brought the world Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet and more. Produced during what were still pioneering days for the team, this cult children's show refined innovative puppetry techniques that had begun to be employed on AP Films' previous series, Four Feather Falls.
In this making of documentary, the behind the scenes story of Mike Mercury, Jimmy, Doctor Beaker, Professor Popkiss, and Mitch the Monkey is told by those who were there - including co-creator Gerry Anderson.

About Us:
About Me:
Century 21 Films Ltd is a multi-faceted production company whose work spans drama to documentary, miniature effects to puppet shows. It was founded by a group of filmmakers who first collaborated on Filmed in Supermarionation, the story of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's hit puppet shows including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet.
Since then, we have worked for a multitude of high-profile clients including ITV, BBC, Mammoth Productions, British Film Institute and the Halifax working on projects such Thunderbirds, Endeavour, Doctor Who and The Twilight Zone.
In addition to our regular filmmaking services, we specialise in ‘Supermarionation’ - the puppetry filming technique used to make shows like Thunderbirds and have collaborated with ITV repeatedly to provide specialised services. Our work has been featured on The One Show, This Morning, Good Morning Britain, BBC News, ITV News and Mastermind.

My mother turned me on to this back when it first was aired. She said that it was 'good' - so (of course) it was GOOD!
I never for once dreamt that the REAL reason it was 'good' was to keep me out of her hair for a period of time - because it really was GOOD!!
Wow! Supercar is an amazing puppet show!
That last line made me chuckle...😂
Geez! I loved that show!
Bringing memories back for me !
great doc incl interview with Des Saunders (director, post production on UfO and similar) and cameraman very informative content
Supercar, FireballXL5, and Stingray were my favorite shows as a kid.
Supercar is now on ITVX.
I hope its not just grown up children who are watching it, although, I'm not sure what today's generation will think of it.
Now as Captain Scarlett comes with a warning that it comes wirh explosions and violence, what would Torchy come with?
Probably a voucher for some therapy.
It probably is just grown-up children watching. For one thing, it’s in black and white. I would never have watched Thunderbirds in the 90s if it hadn’t been repeated by the BBC and (more importantly) if a schoolfriend hadn’t recommended it. It might seem that children are more likely to be exposed to a wide range of content nowadays, but based on my experiences as father of a two year old, popular streaming services (Netflix, Prime) only promote new children’s programmes - perhaps because there’s no need to vet them for smoking, sexism, stereotypes, various prejudices, etc. I can’t even find the original series of Thomas the Tank Engine for my son. It’s irrelevant whether it’s better or worse than the latest incarnation: there’s no reason for anyone to promote it. All the money is tied up in new projects.
@@womble1981 I think a youngster would look on Supercar as a historical curiousity, a bit like we would view a Victorian Zoetrope.
ITVX and Talking pictures and broadcasting a lot of the shows, but I wonder if they'll transmit Joe 90, as it's incredibly violent and the whole concept of a youngster getting adult thought patterns could be upsetting for them.
But back in the 60s, when Joe 90 first transmitted, I just saw it as another highly exciting vision of the future, and just loved all the action
Would love to see a live action SUPERCAR
They had a telephone? AND a filing cabinet? How very DARE Grade try it on!
Just mindblowing isn't it ?
wonderful
I love the super car
Graydon Gould's grandson Edd ran a popular animated series on RUclips before his death in 2012. His friends run it now. The show was called Eddsworld.
Always wondered if there was a connection, or if it was a coincidence, but it turned out to be true.
Its just amusing that a show i watched on video as a kid had connections to a webseries i watched as a teenager, no matter how loosely
We had no idea of the connection, but were familiar with Edd's work. What a small world.
3:52 even with a context, i am confused
1:26 I've Wondered If Captain Scarlet And Captain Blue From Gerry Anderson's Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons And Chief Engineer Brains From Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds The Original Series Will Borrow Supercar. X
Who needs supercar when you've got a Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle (SPV)?
