This is the only film I have found of the 1988 ISDE at Mende in which I rode (number 362) and it was the only ISDE in which I competed. Strange, but I remember very little of the event except that it was incredibly hot and that I only lost time on one day during a tight check on the second lap of Thursday. It is obviously aimed at Dutch interests but does a great job of conveying the atmosphere of the event. I had a busy week as at the time i was a riding journalist for the UK newspaper Trials and Motocross News and each morning I had to submit my copy, written the previous evening after competing through the day. I had to go into the press office and Fax my copy to my office in England for of course there was no e-mail or internet in 1988. Whilst I remember very little of the event, I have always said that it was the best week I have ever spent on a motorbike and that remains the case after 59 years as a trials and enduro rider. I do not remember exactly my result but it was not in the top 100 of the 250cc class though I do recall riding the final motocross test racing against my good friend Toshi Nishiyama. In that race I was lapped and should have been flagged off after the winner finished, but I was determined to complete the full number of laps and rode the final circuit on my own, determined to get a proper finish by riding the full distance of the 1988 ISDE.
