The very first brand new car that I ever purchased for myself was a Ford Probe GT Year One. I drove it for 270,000 miles and recorded the odometer mileage octane of the gas, brand of the gas, amount of the purchase in dollars and gallons and calculated the fuel mileage, for all 270,000 miles. I also recorded the mileage of every oil change and the type of oil( simple enough since it was always mobil 1) and oil filter ( also simple enough since it was always Motorcraft). I loaned and later sold the car to a colleague who immediately placed a rainbow sticker on the trunk, and a week later EVERYONE I KNOW staged an "intervention" style get together where they all said they were shocked but all would support me no matter what.
Our friend's 2 door 1984 GLI is a perfect example of this episodes subject. According to VWoA, the GLI was never sold as a 2 door in America, yet it was bought in California as new. So strange.
I was able to track down the original owner of my 1967 VW Bus by looking at names/dates on a handful of receipts that I got with the bus when I bought it in 2002. I wrote a letter and sent it to the address on the receipt hoping that he still lived there, and he got back to me. And then subsequently mentioned that he had 30 years worth of service records, the original owners manual, the original window sticker, etc, etc for my bus. I met him a couple times and was able to get all of that documentation from him. He was a super nice guy.
C43 bit is reeeally cool. Favorite one you've done in a while! Yeah in Europe the consensus is everyone dislikes each other. I live in Greece went to look at a Peugeot 208 (worst car I've driven yet) and a Clio (tiny backseat) and the dealer went "I never touch Greek-owned cars" and he imported his stuff from France. Dunno if he was taking us for a ride but it definitely raised my eyebrow. "I did not declare such things" "Yes you did not" lmfao
The great thing about old Pontiacs is you can get the full documentation on any Pontiac built including a repro window sticker from Pontiac Historical Services.
When I bought my first car, a 1965 Mustang, (rusty as hell, and a straight six automatic) the original owner gave me his gas log. Might be OCD, but that's exactly who you want as a previous owner. Somewhere I still have the window sticker from that car.
44:09 the song they mention is "Ma quale idea" by Pino d'Angiò. Published in 1980, it samples "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" and it's one of the very first examples of Italian rap
Two of my biggest regrets were not to take a picture when my uncle bought a W126 when I was 8 (and 15 years later, I would buy that exact same car from him as my first old Benz) and not driving her 6 years later and not take a picture with him on the side of the same car. Months later he went sick and left us, but he was the guy that cemented the Mercedes-Benz affection in me.
I just found the original owner's obituary for my 1990 Corrado and he sounds like a great guy living life large. He raced SCCA events and I've since reached out to his copilot to see if there are any corrado stories.
I have an archeological story with a W202 too. Mine left the factory in June 99, and stayed in a showroom not selling due to undesired specs (manual, no-leather, sport version) and the imminent release of the W203 chassis. The car was finally sold in April 02! The maintenance records only showed a battery change. I'm sure the buyer payed half the money for this C240 Sport. I bought the car to the first owner (not including the Dealer that was the first owner registered) with 255.000 km in 2016. Neat car. W202 is the best C-Class. Cheers from Argentina!
There's a BBC series from the 90s about the past lives and previous owners of classic cars called “Several Careful Owners”. That would also be an exciting format for HAGERTY :)
Dr Labby, first owner of the Giulietta is deceased. I printed his obit and added it to the file! He seems to have been an amazingly accomplished individual
On the subject of E brakes, many many years ago I found out that the Citroen BX's e-brake locked the FRONT wheels...ONLY. This happened just after trying to enter sideways into a right hand corner...and I just went straight...to a ditch.
I'm a kindred spirit on keeping a gas log (and on a Corolla at one point). I switched to an app once that was a thing. Don't know why I do it, but I think I'd be more concerned about forgetting to log than forgetting to put the gas cap back.
Hyphen's story from 32:10 hits close to home here. I was on a somehow business trip and my mom had to take my car out of the garage so she could clean it, scrapped the whole side of the car. I only found out a couple of years later when I was actually trading it in for another car and the guy saw something irregular, I assured the guy everything was alright and the car had never been repainted, but we did not close the deal. When I got home and told my mom about it she admitted whats happened and that's it.
When I turned my E39 525iT into the dealer on trade (after cylinder 1 decided to have no more compression) I printed off my spreadsheet of every repair, fill up, oil change, etc. I had done from 58,600-~115k when it grenaded. I keep this type of log for my 2018 Ford Escape. According to these two I'm damaged. And I take that as a compliment.
Makes me want to follow-up w/ owners of my current Miata of 16 yrs. Nerdy but interesting episode. Seating change-up works. 👍 Jason's right arm gesturing would block his face when he sat stage-left.
The first vehicle that I took my own loan out, I still have today, and I have the build sheet from Mopar. A woman bought it, sold it to the father of her daughters friend. I purchased it from the father, while her daughter was away at college. It is a Jeep Wrangler, and I have hacked and modified that SOB to the moon. It is MINE now. LOL!
I have never actually requested a carfacts report on any of my cars. I was able to whittle down to a pretty good idea of where I was in the owner lineage. I still have Vins for them all. I now have a new car so i can build my own story with it
The Porsche Kardex is still available from some "Private" people. I have the Kardex copy for my 1965 356C and am the 4th owner. I had a great talk with the 2nd owner after I bought the car. 1st and 3rd owners were dead but I have since corresponded with the daughter of the 3rd owner. I am still looking for descendants of the original owner.
Wow, the W202 brakeline story sounds frightening to me. I had a W202 without traction control and stability control (mine was a '94 and those two things came later. ) In the two or three years i had it, i had to emergency brake rather often thanks to idiots on the road, so i was pretty happy about the ABS. Especially in the wet or on snow. my previous car had no ABS (an '84 300D wagon) and so i learned to keep the brake very close to lockup in emergency situations. But that cost a lot of brainpower when it was also needed to see if there's any space available to manouvre the car into if the distance would not be enough ect. Much easier with ABS. (at least for me)
Can you give your views on the hyundai n vision 74 in the next episode. Its sounds cool with its hydrogen engine + ev. I know. I love my old school cars. I drive and old rally homologation smelly thing and its sick but hyundai are doing cool stuff lately.
I bought my 2005 Holden Calais from a dealership in 2013. A couple of years ago I was leaving work and there was someone hanging around my car, turned out it was the original owner and she said her husband regrets selling it. So she ended up giving me her business card and told me if I ever want to sell it to call her unfortunately these days it doesn't look so great and I don't really want to give it back to her in the current condition
Why is jason Right? Hes never Right? Great podcast! Funny, informative and the best duo on youtube. But i prefered the singing intro.. and not the clap
I gotta say, following up with your cars previous owners is weird behavior. I don't contact my girlfriends ex's and I don't reach out to my cars previous owners.
Never change seating. My small brain can’t handle it.
the first second was unbearable
Even the editor can’t handle it lmao the names were on the wrong side 😂😂😂
Seriously I was staring at my tv like 🤨🤨🤨
Same lol
Had to flip my phone then realized it's not that!
Jason and Derek should not switch sides. Worlds colliding...Serenity now!
I think we need a complete car history/timeline for both Jason and DTS. If for no other reason than to keep all these stories straight!
"He's gotta old, or dead. Which I guess is a form of old."
One of my new favorite quotes
this is one of the most underappreciated podcasts on YT. from this genre, ofc.
I love that my Monday is being made better seemingly every week by these two.

Everytime I listen to this show it makes me want to start looking for another pre-1995 Mercedes.
Welcome back, Hyphen and Sandler.

The best part of waking up is carmudgeon on the can.
Please never stop this. Thanks.

Dude this episode needs to be at least 9 more hours!
C43 bit is reeeally cool.

Love the podcast and the momentum , keep it up y’all
As a professional archaeologist I dig this on so many levels. thanks guys!
Dudes.... you are f'cking with my brain. Change seats... NOW.
Denny Carmassi has actually played on a bunch of notable rock records over the years. Great drummer.
I've been archeology-ing my 356 and you've articulated exactly why it's so fun to do! Great episode.

My Corolla had an oil issue(2000) and at the end of its life it only ran on three cylinders but it still lasted a month in that condition
I just found the original owner's obituary for my 1990 Corrado and he sounds like a great guy living life large. He raced SCCA events and I've since reached out to his copilot to see if there are any corrado stories.
"Your next" moment was hilarious. Enjoy the show and content always, thank you

Wait, hypen, you've had that 964 since new it was new?
Greetings from Switzerland... @derek you are NOT totally wrong. hahaha
love your show! keep it like it is...
Is it me or have the last two episodes had sound synchronized issues? It's like watching a very low action kung-fu movie.
Yup. 100%
And that's why the clap is important!
It's closer this week than last. I think I spent half this episode looking at Derek's lips, and I'm straight.
Latency.
i noticed the same thing, it is really bad when streaming through a set top box.
Any way we can get a download link for the carmudgeon jingle? I could use it for my messages alert

Please make an episode about car books! I would love to hear about the best car related books you two have read
Jason's been trying to finish that book on piech for years now, but maybe mr. tam-scott has read something
I was binge watching y'all's episodes... But I caught up yesterday... Now what to do till next Monday and I can get more Jason... 🤔😹
Be sure to watch the previous ones on Issimi
@@brandonherrera2891 yep. Been there as well as his Jason's personal channel. 😂

Scrapped the entire side… your spelling is as bad as your mother was to the car.
Love it
Have you guys ever review on American muscle cars ?

OMG the mirror universe of cars
The worst archeological digging is when you find receipts to be falsified during maintenance. Had that a few times.
I have a spreadsheet of every gas fill up for my regular 4Runner. But that's mostly because I like data.
You clap harder than spring break in Cabo!

on the unexpected burnouts topic, the chevy bolt will ROAST the front tires with traction control off

Jason got the clap
This Mike fellow... Please tell more.
Jason, does the VIN of your Corolla goes like: JT2AE09WR80067235 ?
I'm holding my phone upside down to FIX your seating fowlup.
Why is jason Right?
Hes never Right?
Great podcast!
Funny, informative and the best duo on youtube.
But i prefered the singing intro.. and not the clap
NNNOOOOOOO! my brain can't take you sitting on the opposite sides. :)
The Toyota Avalon is abaolutely not an enthusiast car, but with traction control off, it will indeed annihilate the front tires from a stop.
audio sync has been off for 2 weeks.
I love this podcast but could Derek do a better job at clapping? I'm only half joking - the audio sync has been off for the 2nd episode in a row ;)
You still got the wrong displacement for the XL1 ffs. It's 830cm³.
You can literally find Volkswagen SSP files anywhere for everything!
The the key to using Wikipedia sources at the bottom 🤣🤣🤣
"It's not hard at all" he says, before clapping in the exact wrong direction relative to the camera
YOU'RE NEXT haha so rude Hyphen
side perspective is not synchron again :(
I'm so confused
The Everyday Driver guys call it "Carcheology"
Just you.
In England we don't buy anything from Birmingham
I gotta say, following up with your cars previous owners is weird behavior. I don't contact my girlfriends ex's and I don't reach out to my cars previous owners.
wait does Jason have manicured nails? I just noticed this
is it a known fact that a doctor owned car somehow gets treated differently from cars owned by other people
Oh come on. When I was in high school I could do a FWD burnout in a manual Audi 5000 without going backwards first.
En emergency brake that uses the abs pump requires fluid. Total brake failure is likely do to lack of fluid. Terrible idea
Hyphen is crappy-clapper!
WRONG SEATS.
