That’s bizarre & so cool ! I’m in the US snd just watched a drone UK show that shows this area from above - this explained a lot ! Amazing technology!!
I spent many hours there when the system regularly went tits up, maybe i can have some social time with the driver next door, what you dont speak english :)
Your trucking company books you in. There's a terminal screen at the gates that you use through the driver's window (no need to get out). You wave your pass-card at the sensor, and enter the booking number. The terminal prints a slip with two slot numbers, one for your inbound container, the other for the outbound. If there are a lot of trucks it can all take an hour or so, but generally it's very efficient. I've been in and out in 20 minutes.
The crane is automatic until the containers get to within 6inches above the trailer it is then taken over by a PERSON IN AN OFFICE using camera's on the four corners of the cradle, So not fully automatic (SORRY)
"The facility uses 60 automated stacking cranes, 30 dedicated to land-side operations and 30 dedicated to ship-side operations." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Gateway
