Wow! I am impressed! Just made a simple swirl 55gal drum filter but I am now a believer in this system. Would love a little more detail on the specs to reproduce it successfully.
If you add a baffle going from one side of the tank all the way to the other, and as close to the drilled side of the tank as the filter intake tubes will allow the water circulation will be improved. Keep the baffle around 1/2" off the bottom, up to about 1" below your overflow, and keep the air stone and the filter intakes on the small side. The bubbles from the airstone, and the water pulled by the filter inlet tubes will pull the water more readily across the bottom of the tank.
Do you by any chance have a parts list? Current HOB and Swirl filters are not meeting my stocking density (similar to yours) ; also raising Blue Tilapia (from Lakeway in TN).
I use to have many tanks set up years ago with a similar set up The pet stor near me would send customers to my house to view how I set it up so they could use the same set up
just wondering how the self cleaning tank are coming along for the 100 tanks that you got set up. what size pump are you using and how many pump? I duplicated your self cleaning tank idea with six 20 gallon tanks and two 40 gallons tanks but my 540 gph pump isn't strong enough to move the fish waste. any ideas?
I just subscribed to your channel, I keep cichlids and I am considering doing aquaponics with Tilapia oh, I never realized how much they poop, almost 10-fold more than what the cichlids do LOL super informative I watched several of your videos already keep up the great work.
I got two baby turtles in a 10 gallon tank haven't had to clean it wih the system I designed I noticed if you got good circulation it feeds all the poop to your filter
I have an issue with 50 nile tilapia in a 300 gallon IBC and have not seen the bottom since I put in the system last November......can I build this style larger? do you have a close up of all the parts or of how you made each piece so I could follow along?
I was wondering if you could do this on a small scale with a 55 gallon and a 1 gallon sump. My idea was to get a pump with an input and an output tube. On the input tube I would have a pvc T with capped pipes on either side reaching the width of the tank that have holes or slits in them that way all the crud from the bottom of the tank would be sucked across the length of the tank and into the PVC. I'm just not sure if this would work or not.
am planning on using your self cleaning method for my 110 gal tank. would you suggest going to a 1 1/2" inch pipe coming out with a 1 1/2" skimmer and "3" - 1/2" down pipes for the draw tubes?
I'm setting up 30 tanks same as you are..love to see the finished setup...I have been experimenting myself..main problem I have is height of existing overflow.I noticed you drilled about a 1/3rd down..makes a lot of difference to suction, volume of water is critical as well and size of sump when you turn the pump off..all the drained water..1/3rd of tanks..which is a lot of water when you have lots of tanks.I was using a 1000ltr sump, now I am upgrading to 2000 litre sump(2x ibc's) after I redrill all my tanks.Another thing to upgrade is sump pump as you need a lot of water going into each tank to get a flow in each tank..Thanks for the idea,as I am lazy and hate cleaning tanks!
Hey man great vid! Have you had any time lately to put a "step by step" on how to make this?? I tried but failed miserably.. Would like to see how it was done, these projects are very touchy.. Thanks man. Have a great holidays.. Peace.
clever well thought out system, you could add a gravity assist to it if you put a 1" block under one side. what part of Missouri? different parts of that state are rich in caves, minerals, fossils & geodes.
The two pipes to come down for the purpose of cleaning if they were cut on about a 60° angle they would likely work a little quicker good video appreciate your time thanks
little advise here please. 55 gal tank. I built the pvc rig minus the overflow. using 1"pipe as you have and I found the gravity flow to be about 10gal min. wide open. I put a control valve to adjust the flow so as not to overpower my 8.33 GPM (500 GPH) pump. into a 5 gal filter tank. the flow I had to adjust it to, came to just under 3 GPM (180 GPH) and that is with using just 1 down pipe. this is NOT creating enough draw from the tank to move waste to the other side of tank. I used 1/2 inch line coming back into the tank as you did. also, when you turn off your system as you did in the video did you not get the constant gravity flow? or did you turn off the control valve as well. I am increasing the size of my pump and 3/4" line back to the tank with hopes that this will fix the flow issue. I have to now build a bigger filter canister to accommodate for the increased flow. I have a 110 gal tank to move my fish into and hope to use this system. I think that the increased flow through the system and opening up the pvc rig will do fine. but, since you designed this, would like your thoughts...thank you
I have 40x240litre tanks breeding africans, looking at expanding to 100..my problem is you shouldn't use water for aquaponics because of medicines and chemicals used.I will be setting up 4x IBC's for my aquaponics, with perch.Like your idea of less cleaning..definatalty give it a try..
+Steven Brown why the fuck would you use that crap if your system is healthy you don't need it and you can use for aquaponics ( and use an isolation system for treatment if absolutely necessary anyways its bad for your other fish too )
Hey could you please make a video on how your lower tanks that are on the bottom shelf are filtered. I have 3 75gal tanks that are on the floor (due to the space that I have ) and they are a pain to keep clean. Trying to come up with a idea on how I could connect them and make a filter for them. Thanks
I would also like a schematic of this setup. it seems straightforward enough, but i don't want to do guesswork and end up wasting materials. I've been researching aquaponics for quite some time now, and will begin my setup soon. I've been looking for a way to keep my tanks clean for awhile now, and this system looks to be the best setup I've seen yet. Simple, Elegant, and most importantly Functional. I have an acre in S. AZ, which is where we're planning this endeavor. Here in the desert, you live and die by the water you use, so minimal usage through a closed system is ideal. I would very much like to understand the principle this works under, if you would be so kind as to elaborate.
+Manoj Chacko Sorry, no video on the filter. I actually moved across the country to Missouri from WA shortly after making this and need to start all over. I'll do some good documentation as I go and post lots of videos that cover lots of great stuff.
+VeggieFins Aquaponics Looking forward to it! It would be really great if we could see you assemble it, along with a parts list. Thanks for sharing, your system is amazing! I love the concepts!
A hole saw drill bit that is designed to cut glass. They dont really drill as much as grind their way through. The big thing is not trying to drill through tempered glass. Most tanks have non tempered glass, but the bottom piece can sometimes be tempered.
+Billy Tenorio I bought a glass drill at Home Depot. They come in various sizes. Just find the right size for your application. Make SURE that you are not drilling tempered glass or it will shatter. For reference, 10 gallons are not tempered at all. 29s and 40s have a tempered bottom ONLY. 55s are tempered on all panels. Never drill a 55, period unless it is a special untempered tank. this is a guide only, verify if you can before you drill.
What is the purpose of the first bucket if you are just gonna drain everything into the second (swirl filter) bucket? Why would you waste time and money to drain the bottom of it to the swirl filter if you are going to siphon the bottom out anyway?
+VeggieFins Aquaponics A guy in another video (if I remembered, I'd tell you who or which one) says that 95% of the solids filter out in 20 minutes. *shrug* Could you explain a little more about how you siphon the bottom out? I've seen some videos on bell siphons, but I don't think I saw that in your setup??
+DrDangerPuppy Simple. I have a stick of 1/inch pvc pipe that is about 3.5 feet long with a hose attached by an elbow at one end. I stick the pip in the bucket and the end of the hose in a tub. get a syphon going from the bucket into the tub and move the pipe slowly around the bucket "vacuuming" up the settled solids. I do this every other day or so. then dump the tub of waste out in the garden.
This is amazing thanks for sharing .. Only down side is u cant keep any gravel

How would it be. here in California when it gets very hot like high 100s?? will the fish died or the plants?

crafty little rascals ! @12:10 you can see one of the tilapia's making a hanging snare
U cant really miss that ;)
do you have like diagram of this set up for me to try it
Mtn dew is a drug and I also love it.

this is a good video for starter like me that own aquarium and like to go with aquaponics
Thanks Gio! That's exactly why I posted it.
I like your system want to get in to this any way you could help ? like to come and check your system out if that possible thanks

Great system and good cleaning mechanism. I'm not sure I see the purpose of the airlift?
Thanks for posting!
Hi .. I love your self cleaning system but I was wondering if you can avoid drilling the tank .. ?
could you imagine walking downtown with a 14 foot turd dragging behind you on the way to work?

Mountain dew is probably worse than most drugs...
How do you prevent the pipes clogging up & prevent the fish swimming into the pipes?

Brilliant set-up. Can't say so much with regards to whatever crap you are feeding those juveniles, though.

I have watched this video about 2 dozen times. Your cleaner system is awesome and self evident. It makes me want to get tank fish again... ::)
What tool did you use to bore through the tank?
Do you have all that filtration for 2 aquariums??
What are your system specs? Of the ones you're selling?
Could you draw a diagram, please.?
Dam, great video.
Nice shovel in the reflection.
Cool
Thanks for posting this informative video!
do you have a written layout?
Why does water go out the bottom too?
why no more videos love the setup need more info on whole system
we are setting up an aquaponic unit at school. can we get a diagram of your pipe work?

what did you use for your "drip filter" material?
would love to know more on how to do this set up.
Thanks for the very informative video. Do you have one explaining the filter that you have put together.

+Manoj Chacko I've been studying home aquaponics and found a great website at Keiths Ponics Site (google it if you are interested)
nice set up legit man tys
Do the fish ever get sucked up?
Awesome Build! Subscribed!
I like your system /!!
bruh dat chit looks like itll never b finished. Prioritize ur design dont just focus
nice system
not better than weed😏
is that an 82 sturges?
What's the biggest size sank you've run on this system? Would like to see the tanks en mass you referred to in your video
How often per day do you run pump to move fish waste
This is good vedo

Curious... why not stick a sump pump in there?
Hi , what’s the gasket you used ? I can’t find anything useful besides expensive uniseal
Demasía do filtro para 2 peceras!
o2 grow air diffusers, ,check em out,,,air stones dont do shit,,,these pads r the best,,,expensive but the best
Spance Man Airstones do a nice job of surface agitation if you have a nice pump, I don't know what you're talking about.
