He had to do a hasty dash in since he was far away after the DI and then he also very slightly walked backwards (likely by accident) before the jump back. As such, he was slightly out of range for the last hit of lariat to connect, which is why he whiffed the punish.
No way. At worst I think it's even, but as time goes on I think the match will swing in Akuma's favour. It is REALLY hard for Gief to get around Akuma's FB spam. Gief wins on Akuma making mistakws and having low health, but if Akuma makes no mistakes, Gief has enormous problems getting in and doing damage.

@@ShinUltimayeah I legit had the same reaction. I'm picking up Gief and faced a couple decent Akumas in casual the other day and man it's rough.
