At least although having high air humidity at times and long very dry summers, we have strong sun which makes the opuntias bloom like crazy. I live in the middle of the Florida Keys, and in my yard we have a prickly pear the size of a vw bug car!!😂 Right now it's full of yellow blooms and A LOT of deep magenta fruit! They burn the outside needles off to eat it 🤷‍♀️ (They're naturally all over from the Calusa Indians) But ouch, I cut a few off last week to give to a friend, and still have 2 microscopic needles in my fingertips 😬 and mine is more flat paddle shaped. And its next to a huge queen of the night (Epiphyllum oxypetalum, aka orchid cactus) its flowers are the size of dinner plates, and only bloom and last 1 night, but they smell amazing! And bats are drawn to them. Awesome video as always!💚✌🥰

    • @demonhalo67
      @demonhalo67 4 года назад +3

      Yes broken micro needles are often a challenge to remove when they are too fine to see. When they remain in the skin, the area will normally start to redden after a few hours, become increasingly sensuous, before eventually turning infected. I normally sterilise a sowing needle then prick the skin deep enough it bleeds, then squeeze the area until the sensitivity stops as that is pretty much the only way you know it is out if the fragments are very small.

    • @cristinarnold
      @cristinarnold 4 года назад +2

      @@demonhalo67 I know what you mean, they get infected quick!they were just barely under my skin, but tried everything bc I had quite a few in my fingers, bit I couldn't get 2 out, so I took some Elmer's glue and let it dry then peeled it off and wala! They came out! Tiny microscopic needles! My cat (we think!) Walked into a cactus a few years ago and punctured her eye! But dr said it would heal, and it did, but stayed grey. I know now to never attemp to cut the fruit without protection😂

    Yes , unless you live in a warmer dryer climate it's hard to get these plants to bloom. Unless it's like opuntia humifusa, which blooms here in the Ozarks cause it's native here and stands temps way below freezing, a couple of others will here too as long as they can stand the cold winter temps like opuntia imbricata and a couple of others. But yeah in the long run they are hard to get to bloom.🌺From Morris park in the Ozarks to across the Emerald isle , hope you both are well and safe!!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!!!!!✌💖🌵🌺🌴🌻🌿

    These are just beautiful! I got a few beautiful opuntia pads last Summer from a seller in Arizona and potted them up to root. I have been waiting patiently and the tiniest two (just little cinnamon bunny ears) finally have growth on them. The huge one (it's about 18in tall) hasn't done anything, nor have the two little Purple Santa Ritas. I had to use the pot that the Santa Ritas are in for something else so got to see their roots for the first time, and the smaller one which nearly didn't survive at first (half of the pad dried up to a crisp and eventually fell off) has spectacular roots, but the larger plump one has next to no roots. Nothing is rotting on it, just tiny inch long roots. Do you think it will eventually get there? I'm planning on putting them all outside once it warms up here in Wisconsin :)

      So happy you have your little cinnamon bunny ears growing new pads, they can take a good while to send out new pads when they are cuttings, but once they have formed a good root system they will grow nice and fast, I think your Santa Ritas will definitely send out lots of new growth once they have finished forming their roots first, and they will love the outdoors too once the chance of the frost has passed :-D thanks so much Rebecca for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you and Libby and the beautiful pets all lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Tuesday XXXXX

    Hi!, it is rather sad that many species of this vast and attractive family of cactus plants are regarded as invasive and a controlled weed in many parts of the world. It is their ability to reproduce efficiently via vegetative means and vigorous growth cycles, which has seen some species, (particularly O. Robusta), become very successful in the wild.
    Closer to home, I have never seen any Opuntia's in Europe grow naturally in the wild very far from the Mediterranean Sea or further north than the French Riviera. Presumably, this is mainly due to the unpredictably wet winters as I have always found the true Opuntias to be quite hardy with regard to cooler temperatures we have in the UK and Ireland.
    On a personal level, I have always appreciated the disjointed form of sprawling pads of this genera of cacti, and the vociferous flowers generously produced on mature plants. My absolute favourite is the blue opuntioid relative native to the hyper arid areas of N Chile, widely known as the Miqueliopuntia Miquelli. Adult plants really are quite striking.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 года назад +1

      Thanks so much James :-D yes its such a shame that the wonderful Opuntia species are regarded as invasive, I really love them and they are the type of cactus that growers either love or hate and no in between haha :-D so true if it wasn't for the wet winters we have they would go well here as our winter temps are so mild in comparison, I love how varied they are and the many different varieties are endless :-D thanks so much James for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Somerset for a wonderful Tuesday XXXXX

    Hello, I have a very random question. I recently got some Cacti including an opuntia that is in bud and some small flowering cacti but I would like to know what to do over winter to get blooms like this year as I don’t have a greenhouse or a room that I can let cool down. I do have a south facing window with a table next to it but there is a radiator between the window and table which will most likely heat the cacti so I don’t know how I will overwinter them.

      Hi there, dead roots will be either soft and mushy and have a bad smell or the roots are dry and flake and break away easily, if you are not sure if the roots are dead you can re start Opuntias from pad cuttings as they root easily from pad cuttings by removing a pad and letting the the pad callus ( dry over ) for a week to heal over the cut bottom end of the pad, and then once the cutting has been left for a week it can be potted up in cactus soil, thanks so much for watching XXXX
