I compare possibly the best two irons of 2022, the new Mizuno Pro 225 HMB Iron against the TaylorMade P790 Iron in a head to head battle. Two forged golf irons, hollow construction providing great feel and forgiveness but also delivering power and fast ball speed resulting in hitting the ball further and gaining extra yards.

Just been for my first ever fitting today. Went in with p790 and Cobra in my mind.
Ended up walking out having ordered the 225s. They felt incredible blew the others out of the water for me as a high handicapper. Felt better and more consistent than the 6 other irons I tested today including the big cavity back GI irons I thought I would get.

Just ordered the 225 after months of searching I had/hit everything under the sun , honma tr21x , 790 , apex pro, mavrik pro , callaway st pro yadda yadda hands down feel sound performance and consistency was the 225 , most of the other irons have flyer problems 7 irons going 175 until they inexplicably go 190...
Happens all the time with hollow irons most fitters just delete that so it doesn't skew the numbers but when it happens when yer playing you don't get to delete that ....😁

My view is that every now and then TM makes a revolutionary product that is miles better than most stuff out there. Then they go and tinker and mess with it. The R320 drivers. The Bubble Burner fairway woods. The Monza Spyder putter. The 2021 P790's are one of those products and I expect them to screw it up fairly soon.
Mizuno on the other hand always makes a nice product in the iron category and I think in the hand of the low handicapper, I'd suggest stick with Mizuno's. Low handicappers are all about feel and dispersion. If you are a mid handicapper or older player, I'd go with the P790's. Just a bit better forgiveness, bit better distance. So get them before TM abandons them for something inferior.

Great head-to-head, Michael. Interesting. The spin is lower on 225, but so much more consistent. 225 has tighter standards of deviation across the board. The spin wouldn't bother me, anyway, as I'm used to playing stronger-lofted, lower-spinning irons, and don't have any problem holding greens with them. The height is good and the descent angle is just fine with both. At my speeds (quite a bit slower) the spin will be even lower and descent angle will likely be closer to 45º, based on my numbers with several different 7-irons that are right around that 30º in loft. But that's going to work fine. I don't play a lot of super firm greens, and when I do, I tend to just play a spinnier ball. With the 225 carrying further and looking (to my eye) WAAAY better, I can't wait to try them. Probably will wait and pick up a used set in 10 months or so.

Totally understand why Mizuno haven't gone for the foam- foam will change shape, even just a tiny amount, over time and may also degrade. Honestly though, if you're in the players bracket for this type of iron, why would you choose TM over Mizuno if both are similar? One spends a fortune on marketing and gimmicks, the other just makes beautiful irons and just goes about their business.

I honestly don’t think you would be able to detect any difference over time due to polymer degradation. The material is well protected in the hollow body, and the slight changes to be expected over time would be less than the impact of groove wear. Anyway, I would choose something else, have played mizuno though, and will look in a third direction.

On the spin the P790 numbers are skewed by one high spinning shot which was down to strike. If you remove that then the P790 has maybe 250 rpm more on average than the 225. Very, very interesting results. I wish our host would throw out the one P790 miss. This being said, the 225 has better numbers. I have P790's. Will be trying 225's on my next visit to the shop.

Have to go for the P 790 as Mizuno just sucks as usual offering anything but 2 Irons of their entire Lineup for Lefties, it's a shame and noone knows why. Any other company can do it why not them ..

I haven’t checked, but is the Mizuno 225 Pro a completely forged club unlike the P790, which is just a forged face? Thx for the nice review.

Who in there right mind would pick the chinese Taylormades over the MIzunos ... The 225s are money if your looking for a hollow body iron . Been playing Mizunos for years and every shot I hit with my older but deadly MP15s amazes me about the Mizuno brand , its uncanny how good there irons are once you settle in with them ... Im 58 years old with a 2 handicap and as I get older , these hollow body irons are starting to appeal to me and these 225 irons might be my next set ... Cant wait to hit these at my local fitter when he gets em ...

Lots of Mizuno fan boys making comments...but I expect that from a Euro based comment section. The P790's are longer and more forgiving...but go on.

    Hi Guys,
If you had to compare this to a PXG Gen 1 0311 in size, is there much difference because the mizuno look a little smaller and more compact?
    Thanks so much

I have the apex pro irons based on your review of them and they are amazing. Looks like tm and mizuno is trying to catch up to Callaway.

Mizuno has no lefty love. I stopped caring about Mizuno for a while because of it. Almost every other major manufacturer has lefty love except Mizuno.

Are these irons, both the Taylormade and Mizuno, best for low handicappers or recommended for mid handicappers as well?

these are only the best for low handicap players, would be nice to see a video now and again for the best irons for a mid to high handicap player, I'm thinking about changing mine in the new year, im a 18 handicap player and ive had the same irons for 6 years now, any recommendations, I've see some reviews of the sim 2 max irons that are very forgiving.
