FAITH IN THE SAGES: How Much Reliance Must We Have - with Rabbi Michael Skobac - Jews for Judaism Education Director
Many people question the relevance and legitimacy of the rabbinic sages. They protest and say why should we listen to human beings - we only listen to God.
There are at least two very serious flaws with this objection.
First, the scriptures don't give us clear guidance on every issue that we face. And even when it does, we may have doubts about the actual situation or how to apply the Torah's guidance. How should we deal with cases where we lack direction from the Bible itself?
The Almighty could have instructed us to pray to Him and that He would clear up the confusion. But that is not the system that He set up. In the Torah itself, God instructs us to follow the rulings of the leading judges of our time.
In this video, Rabbi Michael Skobac discusses the Torah's mandate that is relayed on the rulings of the sages and why God tells us not to deviate from their rulings to the right or to the left.
This clear instruction can be found in Deut.17: 8-11 and more specifically in Deut 17:11.
