Pärt is an absolute _master_ at composing with silences: his silences are as important as his notes. Sheer beauty, sheer genius, profound understanding of life.
First time i heard Spiegle im Spiegle is in the film Elegy, then i heard the same in the film Mother Night. I listen to that song for hours on end. Someone commented that a new born baby was in serious life threatening health. The family insisted to play the song continuously in the hospital. The baby lived and grown up now and is a dancer ( i think) amazing story. I never forgot that story. Arvo Part is so remarkable with being a minimalist composer. Many "artists" ive enjoyed but are sadly gone now. It would be amazing to see him perform. He is still alive at 88 years old in 2023. He has 2 upcoming concerts in February 2024 in Germany for all those interested
Makes you appreciate every note and you wait for it. Then it resonates in your soul. When I first heard him, I thought its like a lullaby, but im also finding that much is like childhood-like. In the sense that it is resembemblance of nursery rhyme music. Emotional, simplistic, pure, pleasing to hear, thought provoking, just simply lovely. I'd love to see a child reaction listening to Part.
Les notes et le silence. Le silence et les notes. On ne sait plus. Le silence est à cette musique ce que le souffle est au spirituel. Un repos pour l'esprit. Magnifique.
I discovered Arvo Pärt's music a few days ago and I listen to it every day.. I thank God that he gave me this! Pärt is a great composer of our time. His music reveals the secrets of the soul and the universe.
Never been there but it sounds beautiful. :) I remember listening to his piano works on the west coast USA, in the redwoods. The mist clung to the trees, and the shoreline stretched for miles and miles.

Beautiful. I just bought the piano book to play on my harp. Pärt's music moves me deeply, but I also feel resonance from Anna Maria. Pärt' is the one to write this to honor her, since he is a master of silence.
Quite a crystal glass world on which Pärt circumvents and encapsels us, note by note, compass by compass, softhly but determined, shadowing feelings and listening sensations, reminds me the early b&w movies of Meisters Bergman and Antonioni, Some would say Pärt weaves a great, great web witn no need of any spider. Remarkable set, indeed. But to be digested very slowly. When sometimes a day is not enough.... Thank you.
Wondering how much I may have missed had I overlooked this wonderfully magical and tranquil music. When you begin, listen however long it takes and floats you into silence and then into unheard of music of great beauty. Tranquil piano music. Thank you.
What a lovely piece, and supremely difficult for the person playing the strings! I would love to hear a viola version. The violin version is bright, and gives the impression of distress perfectly. The cello, the impression of acceptance.
I often play this album at home; Part has such an understanding of how sound and silence work together. The notes here are cradled by, birthed by the silence, and I think it's this profound insight that draws people to Part. This is where his spirituality is found. As it says in the Bible: In silence and in hope shall your strength be.
Descubriéndolo, y asombrándome progresivamente. Cuando parecia que la musica se habia quedado estancada y no se sabia por donde avanzar, aparece esta maravilla. Luz despues del tunel, de la mano de la sencillez, sal de la perfeccion.
And then..surprise ! The Cello and later violin enters creating more magic and elevating one into yet another mood, a great, beautiful, lovely mood beyond words.
Sweet, melancholy, transparent at 1st, then quirky & atonal, then some very bombastic rough stuff, then a coda of tranquility. I love the whole piece & wonder who might Anna Maria be.The tender moments linger in my mind, especially the ones at the end-like a clock winding down or a persons last sporatic breaths.
Well, stop wondering and get even more mystified: Apparently the one minute phrase, which this entire piece is build upon, where commissioned by the 7 year daughter of one of his friends, for her 10 year birthday! Somehow that one minute phrase though become a massive hour long meditative requiem!

There is a lot of Shostakovich is this.. I am very happily surprised because it is not an angular absorption of influence ..well I do love Shostakovich but he is often way to right angularly linear for me pounding away anticipating the march of redemption ..and well he would be so desperately soulful as Arvo...there is san admittance to Arvo that is not quite as bare as Dmitri. I think Arvo did the right thing for history and saw through banal criticism such as mine and took a bullet for the creative mind and importance of meaning over matter for Shostakovich. It is the flaw that makes bot truly great, it is their stampede needed to complete the articulation of a solution that makes them equally timeless.

Hi Monique, I have a channel with piano improvisations, a kind of piano poetry. ''Piano Narratives'' is the name, enjoy!
It reminds me of the vast empty spaces and silence of northern Europe, the waves cascading rhythmically on the endless vistas of the Baltic coastline.
