    I was so delighted to watch and listen to the interview held between Semhal and Tghat. The former prime minister, Meles Zenawi was the most influential leader of the moment. I never forget his three big decisions that enabled the country to move one step forward. These three big decisions of the time changed the social, political, and economic fate of the country to some extent. His three big decisions were:
    1. The Renaissance Dam start-up
    2. The military operation on Alshebab
    3. The African Union Office to be in the capital Addis
    He played a spearheading role in the above big projects to be implemented, and they were well done. I also never forget the golden political speeches he made in the parliament to the public. I can say that he was one of the meritocratic leaders. However, his political ideology, the Ethno-linguistic federal governing system dismantled the country and ignited conflicts among different ethnic groups instead of building the nation and prospering the people. Indeed, had he been alive, he would have changed the devastating governing system. Therefore, leaders of the moment should take a lesson from such kind of political ideology.
    Best wishes,
    A. S.

    This discussion under the article written has a wide range of topics to discuss but illogical to put all these wide topics in one basket.
    1) Reversal of the Ethiopian nation
    2) State building process
    3) Tigray crisis
    4) Meles legacy
    I don't know what to achieve from Semhal except general overview her experience back with her Dad.
    It is so complicated to bring all these topics together and mixing up won't help. Personally I prefer systematically define and discuss separately inorder to grasp every topic I put here. Please comment.

    Ethnic- oriented politics is not the problem. I have lived in many countries around the world that have this political system. It’s natural and close to the people but in Ethiopia there is a huge misunderstanding about Ethnic politics. This misunderstanding is based on the fact that under Haile sellase rule Amharas subjugated the rest of Ethiopia, then, we had the communist regime - dictatorship that ruled the country under the barrel of the gun, then, came TPLF which followed adopted the same politics under guise of federalism. They adopted federalism only on paper but on practice, they were not different from the previous Ethiopian regimes.
    At least in Somali region, we have seen it worse under Tigray rule. The prove is in the pudding - they ultimately had fallen victims of their own politics - just a small minority that managed to somehow rule Ethiopia with the barrel for so long. They had their time but their folly caught up with them and they tasted their own medicine. Tigray region is in dire economic, social, political situation. That’s as result of arrogance and falsified democracy that they have been giving a lip service to but in practice they killed, pillaged millions of innocent civilians. Mass starvation and just a pure evil. Keep calling for Tigray liberation. You can’t liberate yourself without allowing others for the same liberty.

    • @samuelkebede9536
      @samuelkebede9536 2 месяца назад

      I think the problem starts when ethnic federalism is proposed as a solution for the chronic problem of class difference and social injustice, a problem which the Ethiopian people are still suffering from. Ethnic based oppression was only coined in the 60's to better serve Socialist Ideologies in a country like Ethiopian which did not have enough working class (wezader) but needed a term that could mobilize the peasants giving them a credible cause into joining the revolution. The feudal rule oppressed the society in bases of class and not ethnic identity. This can be proven in where the Amhara rule oppressed its own pesants during their hegemony. The farmer suffered less from his national identity than systemic social and economic injustices. Now modern day elits are running around solving fake crisises.
      When TPLF/ EPRDF adopted this ideology in their modern day state building they opened hell's gate to ethnocentrism and twisted nationalism. Now when ever an "elite" fails to address its people's social and economic demands they all hide back in their "national identity crisis" bs.
      I stand with Meles in most of his economic reform policies and anti neoliberalism advocacies but federalism where in the name of ethnic autonomy regional states are given the right to land and cessation? Who asked for this?
      And the genius Abiy Ahmed did a remarkable job in turning the country around into a complete circus.
      TBH the Tigrayan people are better off without the leadership that got them in this clusterf*ck in the first place.

    • @asadabdulahi1257
      @asadabdulahi1257 2 месяца назад +1

      @@samuelkebede9536 I think the problem is not ethnic based regional autonomy politics. The real problem is when this ethnic federalism exists only on paper but in practice there is total hegemony of other ethnic groups by whoever is on the top.
      We have seen this with Meles and Ahmed Abey has not stray away from this practice.
      I don’t see elites in Ethiopia- the leaders don’t deserve to be dignified with this name.
      When you kill innocent civilians and bring the whole country to its knees economically, socially and politically examples Tigray, Oramia, Amhara region - the only description for this kind of leadership is thuggery and pillagers. Elites in other countries, look after their interests which lie in engaging in constructive politics not inhalation of its people like we have witnessed in Ethiopia. For the Somali region we have always lived in what you call hells-gate. We have been always been at the mercy of the military. They turned the whole region into barren land. During the Tigray-led government, even the president of the region was symbolic figure and the general was fully in charge. This was under pretext of security.
      Soldiers can shoot you without fear of any repercussions. There was no room for any development.
      Every Ethiopian leader will say ‘I am treating Somalis better than my precedent’. - this is the yardstick they use to rule us. This is wrong because the whole region’s population fate SHOULD NOT REST ON THE GOODWILL of a leader.
      Somalis are not employed in the Federal government departments. The few who are employed are not treated with that well. They are viewed as foreigners.
      Currently you will find all Ethiopian ethnic groups working in or doing business in the Somali region without any discrimination or hostility. Can Somalis work and do business in other regions? No they can’t except in Addis Ababa.

    • @samuelkebede9536
      @samuelkebede9536 2 месяца назад

      @asadabdulahi1257 Interesting outlook from Somalia's perspective. Interested in looking more into reason behind Somali's current state. What was the cause of the Jigjiga's 2018 unrest. What is the reason behind continuous border disputes with Oromia region. Why did Somalia fail short in securing power to influence the central government and maintain regional autonomy. Is it corrupt officials oppresing their own people, or is it ethnic based oppression coming from the federal part. If it's the latter, then why didn't the oppression stop when there was a change in regime? If the oppression continues, best believe it towards all regions in Ethiopia like Gambela, Benishangul, Afar, etc. and not just one specific group being targeted because of it's ethnic identity.
      Are there any political parties working towards resisting this oppression within or abroad? Are there any political parties with a clear manifesto? Just curious. These are just my opinions. Willing to be corrected.

      @@samuelkebede9536 unfortunately it’s our experience and history with Ethiopia. The wars that have been raging on in Tigray, Amhara and Oramia regions for the last five years have been our experience under all the Ethiopian regimes. It only for the last five years that we did not see an active war in our region.
      I’m not saying things have been great in the rest of Ethiopia under previous governments but our case was one much horrendous and it was based on ethnic cleansing and under strict military rule. Our nominal regional leaders were imposed and selected from Addis Ababa.
      In every city was surrounded by military barracks. Soldiers killed with impunity and without fear of any repercussions.

      @@temesgenketi Alright, let's start by saying may he rest in peace. He was a strong leader, no doubt about it, but his vision for Ethiopia was seriously flawed. It's cost the country a huge price, and it's especially hurt the Tigrayan people. The whole idea of national unity his guys were talking about didn't really bring people together. It was more like stacking explosives that eventually blew up in everyone's face. Even for Tigray, his home region, he made some really bad calls. He was right there when they were writing the constitution, and he ended up giving Tigray less power because it was a minority vote. Anyone who knows Tigray's history would never do that. The crazy thing is, after he messed that up, he made sure the cabinet had equal voting power to hold his position, but Tigray still didn't get the attention it needed. His whole time in power, the stories they were spreading weren't good for Tigray in the long run. I mean, Tigray is mostly Orthodox Christian, right? They have a rich history of kings and their culture is really similar to Eritrea and Amhara. But his government went against all that. We could talk for hours about how he messed up the country in every way: social, political, economic, you name it.

I am sure Meles didn’t trained her to be such a matured girl as one he was very busy at his duties second she was not old enough to understand when he was alive.

    Very Interesting and cerebral discussion! It is difficult to wed left leaning tendencies with ultra tribalism which finds its interpretation best in right wing politics. Semhal did a very good job answering the question, staying true to her roots but avoiding the rhetorics of the narrow minded bonpartists of old, without going into common pitfalls. I am sure her dad would be proud.

    The war was stated by TPLF by attacking the Northern command stationed in Tigray. The Government of Ethiopia had an obligation to defend the country from this barbarism. I think the Pretoria agreement is signed and for the sack of peace and stability all parties should try to resolve any issues through dialogue. Let’s move from the past and focus on the future.

    She has her father's intelligence, but her allegiance to the TPLF is what many still unfortunately still hold. She claims to hate the elite in Tigray but still reverts back to being an apologist at times. TPLF has done nothing for Tigray and been on a downward spiral since Meles passed. All they've succeeded was use innocent Tegaru's as human shields since launching the attack on Nov 3rd, 2020. Glad many Tegaru's in Tigray are waking up- despite their voices being drowned out by the toxic diaspora children of the TPLF.

Bro, this is not great knowledge ...this is rather great stupidity which puts Ethiopia and its people into this awful situation,mess and destruction!!!

Ethiopians before abiy had ethnic groups on their identity card thats what meles did for dividing ethiopia. Ethiopians deserve what you have because you Will never speek up on your dictators. its a shame to call a Hero meles zenawi. On the otherhand, the man is very much like one of the 'elites', the group that she hates. He tried hard to collect himself and understand while listening to her daunting analysis and expressions. Having a global mindset rather than an 'elite' perspective would help in understanding someone like Semhal👌, I think.
