  • Welcome to the Lake Oroville/Oroville Dam update for March 2024. Lake Oroville, California's second-largest reservoir reports a significant increase in water levels, now measuring 862 feet 6 inches above mean sea level. This marks a 21-foot rise since the previous update, driven by a series of intense rain and snowstorms. Currently, the water level stands 220 feet above the minimum power pool, and 37 feet below the full pool mark, reflecting Northern California's continued onslaught of of severe weather.
This episode will focus on the recent developments at Lake Oroville, including detailed statistics on the reservoir's capacity and a comprehensive review of the water release mechanisms from the Oroville-Thermalito Water Management Complex. The complex serves multiple functions, including hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and water supply, underscored by the operations at Oroville Dam, the Edward Hyatt Power Plant, and the Thermalito facilities.
Viewers will gain insights into the intricate process of water releases from Lake Oroville, including the use of the dam's spillways and the operational strategies employed by dam managers to balance water levels and mitigate flood risks. This episode also contrasts current water levels with historical data, highlighting the reservoir's recovery from its record low in 2021 and its current status relative to full capacity.
The update aims to provide a clear, factual account of Lake Oroville's status and the operational dynamics of the Oroville-Thermalito Water Management Complex, essential for understanding California's water management strategy. Tune in for an informative overview of Lake Oroville's water levels, the mechanics behind water releases, and the broader implications for regional water management and conservation efforts. Warmer weather coming to the Sierra Nevada Mountains the end of this week and all of next week. Snowmelt may be problematic. What about saving more space for the upcoming Spring Pineapple Expresses? I think California DWR was too eager to save water this early in the year.

Could you make a video explain "where" the water comes from for the San Luis reservoir, and how it gets from that Point A into the Reservoir, Point B.

That would be great to have a video of that conveyance. The Feather River flows into the Delta. Near the town of Tracy is the Clifton Court Forebay, which feeds the Harry Banks Pumping Plant. The pumps at Banks send water to the San Luis Reservoir (SLR). The Jones Pumping Plant also sends water to the SLR. Jones Pumping Plant is operated by US Bureau Of Reclamation. The SLR is shared by both the State Water Project (SWP) and the USBR. SWP has 55% of the SLR.

The ability to pump water back into the lake allows Oroville to act as a sort of 'battery'. At times when there is a net surplus of energy in the grid (such as long sunny days). It will be interesting to see if the future Sites reservoir can be managed in such a way that it can also act as 'battery'.

A Reube Goldberg Machine may be similar as to pumping water back into a hydro dam to make electricity at a loss. Great video yet again. :)

They use solar generated electricity during the day to pump water up top - like charging a battery. So they have power available for aircon and other demands at night, when solar isn't available. It's a common practice. They factor in the loss in efficiency, as well as their preference not to use fossil fuel derived power when possible. It's actually quite clever.

Have you done an episode on Lake Berryessa? The locals are posting pics of that Glory Hole every day, hoping that water will soon overflow into it. Some folks are skeptical, stating that the dam managers are sending the water through the hydroelectric turbines instead of allowing it to overflow into the Glory Hole. Correct?

I've seen them pump from the diversion pool back up into the lake- A decade or more ago, as I have many times, I went fishing down at the bottom of the dam on the downstream side... usually traumatized bait fish (I can't remember what kind, it's got a Japanese sounding name) no doubt just come through the turbines, are being gobbled by fat trout... But on this particular day the water was going backwards: into the tunnels... So I went up to the top of the dam and over to where the intakes are. There appeared to be some outflow and a bunch of bass feeding as stuff came up out of there.
I've heard of them doing this, but this was the only time I've seen it.
      Peace.

I'm left "Undecided" after watching another recently released video about low-flow turbine power being developed.
But anyway, water releases using the Main Spillway at Oroville represents a lot of lost potential energy. I have to wonder what kind of structure would be in place if PG&E didn't siphon off money from what people pay on energy bills to maximize profits for their share holders instead of investing in something like a secondary reservoir and development of low-flow turbine technology.

Ahh¿ u made a book. Best i have seen explained using the word book. Luke youtube and Facebook are not!
They are stacks. Never to be deleted due absolute energy storage waste of lasts years news.
Anyway. Where is the contents and glossary.
    1. Can youtunmbe accept screeen inpur. Yes at end of videos it functions: selecting off film presentstion,, a square or circle eith a border.. not a book form yet .
Regarding your show. I wondered if u so slick u report the volume of water drainage precipitsted and the catch in the oroville dam.
U used million acre feet to describe 2d sizr or 3d size .
2d i think and what is a stsdard reference for 1 million acre feet..
Not in olympic pools .. lol
    Yhonk a standard to compare
Volume of water . Volume of water in slush vs white out snow super chilled.
I think warm snow flakes lay flat. Super chill the snowflakes ball up, and turn to ice balls like i usually find on oregon beach micocosms
    Ice balls ..
Snowmegedddon in oregon formed big flat flakes on cape arago.. no wind huge flat flakes.. weird.
Dangerous eeather swept into roseburg or 12 ft snow?

Oh a glossary may cause skip end. I am not sure if youtube counts watching until the very end. So a glossary is best suited hid then, if i presume correct.
To be skipped at the beginning thus stored glossary at the beginning of film to ve a book. Stabmndardly
      Then you add to book.
      U update book,,
      Sdlc standard design life cycle.
      Blooms taxonomy ,
Hyperlink to assimilation once construct verbiage,
Then like montesssori for adult incompetence
      ... oops....
I mean build wisdom not intuition .
Intuition should be based on healthy wise brain.
      No floating ibjects.
I.look at topos steady in the quiet kibraey
And get brochures and notes b4 entering a lecture
      .
      Cross curriculum constructivism
Luke good help screens in early microsoft ..
I taught microsoft and the key was "help"
So outside class you have forms..
Rexx tso ispf skellib ommegamon, cics , lotus 123 action bars. Ispf dialog hyperlink 1988? I read all ibm manuals.
.i made rexx procd,, like "look".
