    Great and useful tips, thank you. Quick explanation on how to achieve halation effect, the importance of luminance/colour range tools, being cautious not to flatten the image for that constant dynamic rang pursuit. The title is somewhat cryptic, as in I see it more as a tutorial than good practice manual, but makes sense once you watch the video. Cheers.

    14:00 I blame Instagram, square format had a place in medium format with the massive negative size, but you can’t just crop everything down to that. Even if I try to push traditional crops on the platform it still forces weird crops…I absolutely agree with having breathing space in the shot! Great tips man! I’m on Capture One, but everything still applies…also, let’s all chill with that Clarity slider ;)

    Good advice about colour contrast.
    But how is 1:1 not a traditional aspect ratio?
    I do agree traditional aspect ratios work better in most cases tho.

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  Месяц назад +1

      Fair point, 1:1 is probably the most traditional haha. Perhaps traditional was not the best use of the word here. I think more “commonly used” in 2024 would be more accurate, but I think you get my point

    This is great. I would love to see a good tutorial on how to start and get good skin tones. I find my photos either too red or too yellow in the skin tones and dont know a good baseline approach on how to fix it and get them consistent.

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  Месяц назад +1

      I actually had that in the vid but took it out. I’d recommend using selective adjustments to select your subject, create an intersect mask within that mask, select color range, then click the skin of your subject. From there, adjust the skin tones using the temperature, tint, and saturation sliders. That’s usually enough to dial them in. If not, then point color is amazing

    I love my 6x6 camera, but i guess theres a difference between cropping to a square to force fit something in post, and shooting with a square in mind to begin with.
    Although I would have thought even in this day and age a square wouldn't have been too strange a crop given its how platforms like Instagram will still display images on a profile...

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  Месяц назад

      Perhaps my use of the word traditional wasn't the right choice of wording here, there's nothing more traditional than a 1x1 crop haha. But yes I think you understand my point, 1x1 crops aren't used so often anymore and the general public isn't quite as used to them. Even 10 years ago it was more common to see, especially through Instagram. But ever since IG allowed portrait orientation crops, they have taken over and the square isn't so common anymore.

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks for the comment! I don’t edit in BW all that much tbh, however it’s a much simpler process as you’re just working with tonal ranges/light and not hues of color. I’d recommend making the conversion, editing your basic adjustments, then play around with the hue/saturation/luminance values of the colors to really dial in the tones

    Sean such a great video, thanks for all of this, but I’m doubting about contrast, for example at 07:00 in that image, you recover the info of the shadow parts but I tend to think that if you don’t slide up the darks slider, the bright house itself stands out even more if you keep the shadows dark? What’s your point here? Thanks in advance!
    Edit: my apologies, you already talk about it later on 😅 didn’t end the video and that image at 7min caught my attention for that same reason. Thanks anyways!

    I am no expert just a photo and video enthusiast. It's just that most of these problem. S are because neither of them felt colours on canvas or let's say filling drawing sketches with their acrylics or markers. It will give them idea to feel something similar to soothe exponent to realise. Later on expressing such things to oneself it would be translated into cultural aspect, historical ( film nostalgia ) would become an aesthetic. So lets compose a frame and make something out of it. And most importantly is to stop. And realise it is complete.

    Buulshit, when you are using film there is also only one “color style” samé with digital not to much editing on every art university they taught me not to Edit them soo much almost dont touch those raw

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  Месяц назад +1

      We're not discussing film here, we are discussing digital. Even with film there are many different color styles, depending on the film stock. Regarding your teachers saying to keep edits minimal, that's an acceptable approach. It's also not "correct". There is nothing wrong with editing an image. If you don't, you're leaving so much artistic expression on the table. Even Ansel Adams would dodge and burn his negatives, how is that any different than editing a digital photo today? It's not.

  • @kristjan-wn3gc
    @kristjan-wn3gc Месяц назад

    Correct thing would be: Stop editing your photo. Editing is not photography. This digitaly manipulated unrealistic crap is flooded internet so badly.

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  Месяц назад +5

      You couldn’t be more wrong, and I really dislike this elitist “no editing” narrative. Photographers have been editing their photos long before digital ever came around. Ansel Adams was known for burning parts of his negatives to darken them. So is that wrong too?
      The fact of the matter is if you’re shooting in jpg and not editing your photos, you’re just allowing the manufactures color science to do it for you. Where’s the creativity in that?
      Photography is a subjective art form. You can do whatever the hell you want and it’s not “wrong”. If you don’t want to edit your photos that’s totally fine, there’s nothing wrong with that. But don’t look down on those who do.

    • @kristjan-wn3gc
      @kristjan-wn3gc Месяц назад

      @@seandalt Adams was also manipulator in this case, but photography is not making images by adding chemical as he did or just you who playing with sliders and masks in Lightroom. Photograhy is collecting ligth, correct light and thats it. All these games by digital instrument is just artistic playground to make it pop or faking result as it is. Its going worst and worst by years. No, i am not shooting jpg file, but is also manipulated data, only untouched raw file itself represent most realistic lights and contrast as it was in real life. You guys trying to just push reality and correct light away its place by using this artificial bs. I dont look down you, i just send a signal we need come back to real photography and stop manipulating everything.
      You, as a photographer, should instead contribute to the creation of reality by using software on the computer, and not digitally draw additional light and contrasts on the image that were not there before. It's just some subjective opinion of someone that photography does not have boundaries and "do what you want". Then you have lost the fundamentals of photography
      foundations and make art instead.
      Have good day!
